We can add
another iNotch on the
iBedpole to the list as Memorex has annouced its forthcoming portable video (and audio) player for Apple's iPod. The iFlip claims to only support the 5th generation variety (what about
6th gen?), and sports an 8.4-inch LCD with 480 x 234 native resolution, built-in speakers, tilting dock, and an integrated battery to provide "up to" 5 hours of excitement, which we assume drops substantially when using the device to play back video rather than just audio. While the fold-up unit has S-video out, line out, dual headphone jacks, and an on-screen menu to adjust color / brightness-related aspects, there appears to be no way to mirror your iPod's display on the iFlip (i.e. for showing album art while a playlist spins). But if the small screen on your
iPod has you bumming, you can grab an iFlip in September for $200 and make life on the road -- at least for a few hours -- a bit more enjoyable.
If the iFlip only does video (or mainly does video), shouldn't the 5-hour battery life refer to using it with video?
Not bad for $200.
Totally stupid accessory for a practically worthless and expensive MP3 player that does nothing well but play DRMed AAC files locked into Apple devices. You want FM radio, Apple fanboys? Buy an additional FM tuner. Want video playback? Additional device! Want better sound quality? Ooops sorry there ain't an accessory that helps with that!
200 dollars for this is not bad.
It's at times like this I wish I knew how to patent stuff. I posted my idea for a description of a device like this on ilounge around two and a half years ago, before the video ipod even came out. By like this I mean *exactly* like this, with an ipod shaped hole into which the ipod could be placed and sit flush with the rest of the device.
Ah well
Doesn't this defeat the object of having the screen on the iPod itself? It's not exactly portable being as large as it is, therefore defeating the object of the iPod completely; a pocket sized media device.
I can see people using this in their homes more than out and about. Which begs the question, why? Why can't just watch the movies on your PC?
Doesnt this defeat the purpose of the word "Portable" The Ipod Video has its own screen.
While Apple/iTunes has not introduced movies-for-download, I have been watching full-length features on my 60gb iPod for a while. Handbrake has been very successful for ripping content. This device neatly fills the niche between video cables for TV viewing and the tiny iPod screen at a price competitve with portable DVD players. 'Seems perfect for backseat movie watching for kids on family trips.
This would be great for the kids on trips. Load up the iPod with shows and they cannot scratch anymore dvd's
could some one please tell me if the iflip portable player is compatible with the ipod classic vidieo 80gbs.. manuel says 30gb 60gb???
