OPPO Digital's 20-inch TV/DVD combo
If you can look past the circa-1999 Cinema Display design and the 4:3 aspect ratio, OPPO Digital's new LT-2007 LCD TV/DVD Player Combo doesn't look too incredibly shabby. Beyond the obvious DVD playback provided by the display's base, there are VGA, Component and S-Video inputs for use with a general selection of 480i/p, 720p and 1080i devices. To further its stand alone properties, the unit includes built-in stereo speakers, and supports USB storage devices for a good selection of video, audio and photo formats. This actual display is a 20-inch LCD at a 800 x 600 resolution, and features a 500:1 contrast ratio. There is also a built-in NTSC tuner and a shiny remote control to round out the package. The LT-2007 goes for $600, and looks to be available now.

Dude 800x600? I can't believe such low-res LCD's still exist...
Tony Rayo @ Jul 29th 2006 4:47PM
Who cares if it supports 720p/1080i if it has to be letterboxed and shown at such a low res. I think you should take that money and put it towards a mac mini and a CRT display, would cost around the same and have lots more functionality.

I love the design of the thing! If only it wasn't so crappy : (

What;s si fav about a 4:3 800 X 600 Resolution 500:1 Constrast Ratio monitor with a cost of $600.00? This is a piece of garbage compare to what HP, LG, Samsung, and a few others have to offer. You can get a better LCD monitor for a lot less ca$h.

Wow, OPPO totally missed the mark on this one. Their OPDV971H upconverting DVD player is top notch, but this product is a total oddball. They may as well sell it at Walmart.
Lux Aeterna @ Jul 29th 2006 8:58PM
Does it upscale?

i imagine this will be hot with the old lady crowd...
it looks like it's made for retirement homes.

IS THIS FOR REAL?!
This would have made an awesome iMac-style secondary display, where it not for the embarassing suckage of it all. That might not be the intention of this product, but the design is exactly what I'm looking for -- it's such a shame the inside can't match up to the outside.
Shunnabunich @ Jul 30th 2006 2:08AM
So how long until someone starts getting these, hacking higher-res LCDs into them and selling them on eBay? :)
v8v @ Jul 30th 2006 2:13AM
You stupid bozos...it's a 1st gen LCD iMac from Jan. 2000 minus the computer in the base. Are you bloggers really that dense or just putrid?
Matt @ Jul 30th 2006 3:51AM
This was selling in Target & K mart in Australia 6 months ago (it ALso looks like an imac G4)
maff @ Jul 30th 2006 6:10AM
yeah, thanks for that v8v, its not apple product, it's an OPPO Digital product, it just appropriates some cues from the apple school of design (they're not alone in that respect), i think you're the one thats a donkey! Putrid? I didn't know that engadget was written by putrid zombies, i for one welcome our new zombie overlords.
tom @ Jul 30th 2006 2:50PM
Am I dreaming, or is it just a pale copy design of those not so old Apple Cinema Displays 15" 17" and 22" ?

I saw this today and thought wow - how cool... then I got to reading everyone's posts and I started to think - this has got to suck! I started doing some research online and found that for about $500 - 600, you can get a monitor - BUT THAT'S IT! Not one with a DVD player built into it... Not one with USB connection for you to run as a digital picture frame... not one with audio outputs so you can hook up your X-Box and play with surround sound... You guys all missed the mark on this one. Its not something that goes into a studio to test the latest equipment with - it's for the BEDROOM or the KITCHEN or the KIDS ROOM.
I for one love the design!

Oppo's new TV LCD/DVD player looks great and would be perfect for my room. It’s a nice size that would be awesome for watching DVD's.
Nandor Ferarri @ Jul 31st 2006 1:27PM
HDTV? Who cares about it!!! I want to have something small that fits in my room and I could watch a DVD before I go to sleep. It's cool because i could also see my pictures from my digital camera. Its a cool product. I dont care what other people say about OPPO - this is the coolest product, that I got to have in my Bedroom.
John Reardon @ Jul 31st 2006 1:40PM
I think everyone is missing the mark here. Their up-converting DVD player is top notch. But I think they're looking at a different market segment here and it's obviously not us. Personally this is not something I would buy for myself, but I could see picking one up for my daughter who's off at college. She would be more concerned with aesthetics than HD-ready resolutions and screen format.
Triumph181 @ Jul 31st 2006 1:47PM
Why the negativity? It's an elegant package with a desirable list of options that will fit anywhere.
Resolution is not as high as units costing three times as much, big ass surprise right there. Personally the price point is a major issue and once you add all the components, strew them artictically all over your desk, you will probably insist on buying a couple of them for home and hearth.
I can think of a number of other products I might want in my bedroom, but maybe not in my kitchen, living room or office.
Mark @ Jul 31st 2006 1:55PM
You all are crazy! This TV rocks! Not only is it way better looking than everything else out there, you can do such more with it for a cheaper price! This doesn't seem like it's meant to be on top of the tech-world or anything, but more as a convenient TV for people who want to take their TV's with them on trips or throw it in a dorm room and actually look good and stylish!

News Flash!!!!
Sony, Pana and other huge CE companies have lower end products….I’d cut OPPO a little slack here…It’s a stylish product for chicks and kids.
