Apple OS X 10.5 "Leopard" officially debuts

Leopard will feature the new and/or improved:
- 64-bit Cocoa and Carbon application support, right beside 32-bit apps, all native.
- Time Machine - Automatically backs up every version of your files to a hard drive or server. Includes snazzy 3D Time Machine view (pictured) to browse through older versions of folders.
- Boot Camp - "Even better." Ships with Leopard.
- Photo Booth - With expanded camera support.
- Spaces - Apple's term for virtual desktops. Allows you to group different applications together in their own environment for different tasks, and allows movement of windows between "spaces."
- Spotlight - Can search other machines over a network. Boolean operations, application launching, and recent items will also be added to the search tool.
- Core Animation - Developer architecture to create moving eye candy with little code.
- Universal Access - VoiceOver enhancements, Braille support, closed captioning and improved navigation.
- Mail - Stationary (templates), Notes (specially highlighted self-sent emails) and To-Do lists all built in.
- Dashboard - New Dashcode tool allows visual template-based Widget development. There's also a new Web Clip app that takes any part of a web page and turns it into a Widget.
- iChat - Allows multiple logins, invisible mode, animated buddy icons, video recording and tabbed chats (hooray.) There's also photo booth effects, iChat Theater (slideshows, Keynote presentations and videos displayed over video chat), and photo/video backdrops.
- Enhanced Parental Controls
- Xcode 3

>To average end consumers....I don't see themselves defining themselves according to MS at all.
What in the world are you talking about? Their major ad venture is the whole "I'm a Mac/PC" that does precisely that! A campaign which from what I hear from people pisses off PC users and embarrasses some Mac users including myself.
"Apple needs to start defining itself as and against itself instead of just in opposition to Windows."
I've got their next campaign slogan.
"We're not good. We're better."
The first sentence, to me, sums up Apple right now and it definately describes this worthless conference.
THE WORLDS MOST ADVANCED OPERATING SYSTEM
finally gets a system restore like feature after all this years? talk about world advanced and virtual desktops? wow their really ahead of our time.
i give apple major credit for the hardware design but i hate how they claim worlds advanced and most innovate company when al lthey do is steal ideas and provide a mac like structure to stuff already invented.
is not innovative when a company steals an idea and then changes it to fit its operating system flavor.
dissapointed was expecting more all of this for a desktop? and an operating system that looks less impressive then its sibling.. WOW
"A campaign which from what I hear from people pisses off PC users and embarrasses some Mac users including myself."
Yes, we're geeks. I don't like the ads: my sister loves them, thought I would love them. So what? Even here I don't see it as a comparison to Windows, in the shadows of Microsoft.
Consider the clean, white-boxed, beautiful packaging... the remove from box and plug in and play mentality.
Average PC users are completely unaware of this, immune to it... and yet it appeals to them so much that it draws them to Apple and the Mac and the iPod... And when they experience it, they don't think about it in relation to Microsoft, WIndows... They think: why isn't EVERYTHING like this?
The big question: Will Vista come out before Leopard?
"... finally gets a system restore like feature after all [these] years? ..."
You actually believe that Macs never had system restore abilities? What a ridiculous thought.
This is system restore meets Expose, a function first premiering in OS X 10.3 that is the forefather to a few Vista ideas like Flip 3D. Time Machine is simply an easier and more visually pleasing take on backing up for people such as myself who rarely if ever do it.
System restore is meant to retain settings:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/systemrestore.mspx
Time Machine can retrieve settings as well as single files like documents, photos, mp3s and restore them with a single click:
http://www.apple.com/macosx/leopard/timemachine.html
Now I'm no Mac zealot. I'm sitting on a Dell Dimension believe it or not but I recognize that Time Machine is an entirely different beast, one that could come in very handy.
Again, here's a YouTube video showing it in action:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PiMW7DIGwNw
I am Top Secret MacPro employee, and have access to the super tippity top secret information that none of you PC peons know about.
I am about to reaveal to you that top of the toppest top secret of apple. The MacPro is actually a time machine, with fully functional whizzing lights and robot voice, with cool smoke effects built right into the newly engineered chassis.
What Steve did not mention was that when you use the Time Machine functionality, the MacPro creates a spherical vacumm in time/space thus transporting the Machine into the Past (which is where the lights and smoke do there magic)
We are having trouble with power issues because it takes 1.21 jigawatts of power to run the QuadCore Flux capacitor.
Also, Steve was not lying about Mac OSX being vista 2.0. As the other Stevie J(our experimental chimp, not the CEO) has acutally taken a succesful prototype MacPro into the future, and brought back some of the features in windows Vista 2.0 coming out in 2020.
We have recieved an email from Stevie J (the experimental chimp, not the CEO) saying that he has a Pirated copy of Vista 2.0, and has mistakenly sent it 2060 instead of 2006. We eagerly await the arrival of his Pirated copy of the new yet to be created Vista 2.0 Operating system.
We are currently having problems with getting the damn machines back from the future (or the past) and so are still working on this small technical problem.
Also, we are trying to code in the spherical time vacumm so that it is user defined, rather than the default 2.5m radius. This has left alot of our top secret testers maimed, decapitated, circumcised or amputee'd, as they have sometimes left some part of there body inside the spheriical vacumm when it makes the quantum leap.
please dont tell anyone...
"ok
why do i need a mac when 90% of the software i use dosnt run on a mac ,, actually all the cuting edge software for 3d animation and dynamic motions dosnt run on a mac"
Um, obviously you don't know what you are talking about. Macs can run the entire Windows operating system, including all of its applications, as fast or faster than any pc. Do your research before making naive comments.
many good point have been made but need to be reintegrated
this is a world wide DEVELOPERS conference, you will not get an iPhone
it is only august, too far from the holidays, there will be no iPod
a point to all the mac-bashing PC users out there. first of all, we took your chip, the huge rise in market share shows we are taking the users and as for apple clutching at straws, did you now see the comparison between Tiger (existing) and vista (still very much a beta) windows have done several things to there new OS and here they are (BTW I am on the beta team and i work on windows XP servers so i know a thing or two)
- Upgraded there GUI (mmmm Shiny)
- Stolen the iCal and called it Microsoft calendar
- Stolen widgets, called them gadgets
- Stolen finder, but they moved it!
- created a 3d interface, no one will use
And last but not least REMOVED ALMOST ALL USFULL STANDARD DRIVERS!
to anyone who remembers the XP release, it was a shambles, nothing worked. around 10 updates over a 3 month period fixed this. history will repeat itself.
One final note, for all of those who say that the apple mocking windows thing is petty, it started as a joke. We said these features are so good Microsoft’s boys are going to take them all, THEN THEY DID
IF YOU CANT INOVATE, IMITATE
"My customers use AOL, Yahoo! and MSN. I need to "IM" to them with the occasional video chat from the road to my wife and daughter.
Looks like it's still adium.

got a link to that version of Adium you are using that lets you do the "occasional video chat"? i am really really curious about it. since it is, in fact, imaginary.

"I think its because microsoft doesn't need banners or quotes to help boost their ego. You get the software, good or bad, and you let others develop hardware for it. You also try to eat the competition. 'Nuff said.

yeah i've never once seen anything ridiculous coming out of a Microsoft Developer Developer Developer Developers Conference.

"(but now they've built in Remote Assistance into the OS but via the chat program)
Posted at 4:39PM on Aug 7th 2006 by tf"
they've had built-in remote assistance for awhile. since Tiger came out. i use it daily. you could control the machines using either a VNC Client or the Apple Remote Desktop Admin application... which of course added a TON of features on top of the standard screen controlling which a free VNC client would give you.
Have any of you guys ever worked in business? OF COURSE Apple will have new products for Christmas, just like every consumer company. And just like every consumer company, these products will shortly come out before the Thanksgiving buying weekend, so retailers can sell them. And they WONT be announced until they are ready to be shipped, because that would kill the sales of the existing products. That's why they won't ANNOUNCE Merom in the MacBook Pro until the day they can ship them. IT'S THAT SIMPLE!

Wow, none of these new features amaze me. :( BIG dissapointment.

Time machine, for those dumb enough to over write a file without checking to see what they are doing. Perfect for apple users! ie. 30 year old house wifes and un-skilled video editors! YEAH!!!! TIME MACHINE!! Take us back to the time where we were thinking straight! Oh yeah... I am a 3D animator... so I am just a tad bit biased... just a bit.
CTG: "Now I'm no Mac zealot. I'm sitting on a Dell Dimension believe it or not but I recognize that Time Machine is an entirely different beast, one that could come in very handy."
You're right, it is a different beast than System Restore. However...
http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060730-7383.html
Wow. Is it just me, or are most of you only capable of b*&ching and whining? In the past 5 years I haven't even seen a fraction of what was shown today at the WWDC by Microsoft. What is the point in sharing your opinion if you have nothing constructive to say? I don't own a Mac, but I must say I was very impressed.. just because they didn't make you elitist tools crap your pants doesn't mean it was all lies and garbage. Don't mask your insecurities by anonymously bashing other people online. Its sad.. just sad.
Braille support?!!!
How's that again??
I love it when people complain and critise - but can't take a minute to actually go CHECK.
System Restore is only part of TimeMachine - however, there have been apps on the PC like GoBack that do essentially what TimeMachine does.
However, in Vista, there is a feature called Backup which offers essentially the same features as TimeMachine - albeit with less flash.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/features/foreveryone/backup.mspx
Look towards the bottom. When enabled, Backup adds a panel to every file's property dialog that lets you select from saved backups in real time.
As for bitching and whining - hey, how you behave when you're in your clique says a LOT about you - and how the people you respect acts says a lot more. Apple invests a surprising amount of effort slamming Microsoft and it's getting silly and tiresome.
It only impresses the Mac faithful who more and more come across as poor losers.
As for Leopard vs Vista - there are somethings Leopard will do better, and some Vista will do better. Personally, I'm glad there are choices so we can use what we like.
Oh, and not all of us WANT to use MacOS (and I say this as someone who was a Mac developer for over a decade, has had his software featured on Apple's site and worked with Apple on projects).
One other thought - some of the 'new' features that will be in Leopard are already in Vista - but as we know - they've been working on it since 2002... so how exactly did they copy all this from an OS that won't be out until next year?
Especially when some of these features were in CTPs released LAST YEAR?
Could it be - oh.. I dunno - that they BOTH copied apps that someone else made - like Dashboard and Sidebar being Konfabulator ripoffs?
I think it was a very nice preview and I look forward to the final release.
However a friend of mine disagrees:
http://www.waddo.net/textshumour/short_texts/windows_v_mac.html
I'm trying to figure Time Machine out. It's a great idea, where does it back up to? Does this mean we need to go out and buy external hard drives larger than the ones in our computer and always keep them connected?

Who you trying to kid? Your post reeks of a juvenile attempt at trying to appear clued up. And then you finish it off by irrelevantly announcing you're a 3d animator (yeah right) Judging by the state of your post, as if anyone’s going to believe you're anything more than just another obnoxious kid with a big mouth.
The whole Mac vs Windows, Windows vs Mac is ridiculous. Every forum, message-board, blog about either company always turns to this nonsense. I use to hate Macs now it's all I use. For me it's a superior operating system. My reasons are not important because they will only be greeted by more useless arguments. If you feel Windows is superior, good for you. My grandfather and one of his friends use to argue about Ford and Chevy trucks. Well they're dead and neither changed the others mind. Apple did give us Boot Camp. They understand Windows has it's place and understanding has made Apple more marketable then before.
OS X and Vista having an outwardly similar backup software built in is totally understandable. This is what companies do, especially in the computer industry. Who copied who is far less important then which will work without issue at any level of user. Being that we are unable to use either one at this point we then each form a total blind guess only have track records to go on. If you feel Windows software has proven itself to be constantly more stable and user-freindly at any level, I'm not going to argue with you. It never hurts to be even just a little objective. Unless that is one values ignorance.
quote: pieisgood - Time machine, for those dumb enough to over write a file without checking to see what they are doing. Perfect for apple users! ie. 30 year old house wifes and un-skilled video editors!
Wow that statement screams, "I'm a total looser that doesn't really work in 3D animation because if I did I would understand the importance of backup so not to repeat my last 20 hours of work."
Lastly just because some Apple users/developers are disappointed with the preview of Leopard, does not mean we see less value. Apple people want a lot. I mean we want stuff that makes our jaws drop. We are always hoping for crazy awesome reveals from Apple. The reason we keep pushing further and further is because Apple has given us many crazy awesome things. Some we already wanted others we hadn't thought of but wanted once their reveal. No matter what the next OS X holds or doesn't we know it will be complete and stable, containing more truly valuable features for any user at any level.
The ArsTechnica article doesn't make it very clear, but Shadow File Copy/Previous Versions came out with Windows Server 2003. It takes snapshots of network shares as defined; by default twice a day. Granted, you need to be on a Windows Server 2003-based network, but it is an awesome feature. It's saved us at work a few times, and looks pretty similar to Time Machine. So while this is new on the desktop level, it's absolutely not new.
Now that storage is dirt cheap it really is time for more stuff like this; I wish Windows XP would get Shadow File Copy backported to it, but at least Vista will have it.
I was reading something about Mac OSX Leopard and then I find some site which said something about an upcoming (Apple) event in april.
http://www.nabshow.com/
For more info read this article:
http://www.macworld.com/news/2007/03/01/nabevent/index.php?lsrc=mcrss
"Apple will hold a special event at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) trade show on Sunday, April 15. While no details were available on what, if anything, will be announced at the event, Apple has used such events in the past to launch significant product releases."
Wouldn't this by any change be an oportunity for Apple to show some of the secret features of Leopard or even give the release date for their next OS X? The site also mentions the fact that Apple will have a larger booth at NAB then they had last year.
To me it sounds like something big is coming up. And I really hope it'll have to do with Leopard because I really want to buy my MBP with Leopard on it.
