Sony Ericsson K618
Sony Ericsson just kicked out the K618, a new UMTS handset that they're touting as being as "light and slim as a typical 2.5G phone". Which probably makes tons of sense to the average consumer. Anyway, besides UMTS the K618 has a 1.9-inch, 176 x 220 pixel LCD screen, a 2.0 megapixel digital camera, and Bluetooth EDR (and support for A2DP, which means you can use it with stereo Bluetooth headphones). Should hit "selected markets" sometime in Q3 of this year, and no price is listed. Click on to see a couple shots of the K618 in white.

Nice phone.. Too bad it isn't 3 megapixel.
I'm still waiting for a stylish 3mp phone. Don't like the cybershot they have now, not pretty enough :)
Is it just me, or are all SE phones starting to look the same. Did they fire their designer and gave up looking for a new one? Nothing radical and new from them in ages...
hmm.. that's true perhaps.. But why try making a better new design when nobody even comes close in design and features like SE.
While the K800 isn’t the best looking it’s got a great camera.
And as for making them look different, why fix it if it’s not broken. Nokia tried it with it’s round key pad on the 3650 and there successful 7280. And they don’t need to make it the slimmest/lightest/shortest/smallest keypad, as long as it’s comfy in my pocket and easy to use then all they need to do is keep adding useful features.
Just a small correction - Bluetooth EDR has nothing to do with Stereo Headphones. You don't need EDR to support the A2DP profile. And to be honest, EDR isn't terribly useful in a phone anyhow, except as a high-speed serial link (so if you can tether this phone to your laptop it'd be worthwhile).
Cool looking candybar :)
I'd take the black version, The white one makes me think of an iPhone (or iCall, whatever. Basically made by Apple), and that's a bad thing.
Looks pretty much like your standard SE candybar. BTW Bluetooth EDR is Extended Data Range. The stereo headset profile is called A2DP.
I like this phone but is it quad band? Because if it is not it sucks.
This LOOKS like a Walkman Phone, based on the joystick. It's identical to the W810. But why are they calling it K618 and not W618....and oh if they called it W618, then it would sound like it was inferior to the W810, but it's not.....is SE starting to have problems figurig out new fancy names for their phone alongside just ripping off their own designs?
WE NEED SOM CUTTING EDGDE DESIGN HERE!!!!
SE is becoming mainstream, that means other companies are starting to copy their design. Then SE will start to become unfashionable because it looks like everything else (and Nokia will start to "win" again).
SE IS STARTING TO GET BOORING PEOPLE.......
PS: I've had every Ericsson/SE phone since god knows when.....and I still love them. (BUT they are getting boring)
T29, T39, R380, T68, T68i, T610, T630, K750, W810..
Oh, I also had the Bosch 908, Bosch 909 Dual and the Siemens S40 hehehe....
WACKO!!!
SE are not the only ones spitting out shiny nice phones. actually i never liked their line of clamshell design. motorola and lately samsung too are making a far better job there (with samsung basically copying motorola now, to be fair... but i never liked their older clamshells either). not to forget about the latest samsung sliders; e900 is a real beaut. unfortunately they tend to lack functions and comfort.
SE is pushing out so many phones lately... only ones i find noticeable are the w900i (can we pleeeeaaaase get an 's' version of that?!), m600i (rrrrr) and p990i (ugly but functionable). they all come with nice firmware tho, i think in terms of that only nokia is superiour and they tend to be a bit boring on the design side.
Mmm, i love SE phones, and no i dont think they need a re-design. Even if others will start copying, they wouldnt be able to achieve the same level as SE's design, besides, once that happens, i'm sure SE re-designs. For now, just get me my M600i already!
Isn't this just the W810 minus the W?
HEADSETS "I hope Sprint will add this phone because I want one.."
sorry dont ever count on it, it will NEVER come. (for sprint or verizon atleast)
Actually, this is not the w810; it's the v630. Pretty much the exact same thing to the "Vodafone exclusive." (http://www.sonyericsson.com/spg.jsp?cc=global&lc=en&ver=4001&template=pp1_1_1&zone=pp&lm=pp1&pid=10457)
Even the description on their product pages are almost word-for-word.
Not so exclusive after all.
While SE's phones are great specs-wise, I agree with everyone else and give SE's designs a big *yawn*.
Hrmm, pardon my possible lack of knowledge, but.
Doesn't UMTS count as 3G? Wasn't 2.5G more like EDGE?
Since EV-DO is 3G, and UMTS is faster than EV-DO?, thus therefore in conclusion, UMTS is 3G? Or do you count that more as HSDPA?
Hey. It's a phone, not a cosmetics compact or a piece of candy or an implement you shave with. IT'S A PHONE!
And SE puts more features into a phone than anyone else...just that they never get to the US.
note to richard: that's how _you_ see it. but, there are many many other people that see their phone exactly as one sees a cosmetics compact or piece of candy. i like sony's phones, but i agree with many here - they've been using the exact same design language with no evolution - would be nice to see something new in the gene-pool. kick ass UI though, as usual i would assume at least. that has been evolving, and in good ways.
All you whinners make me laugh. How about calling Apple to bring a little cutting edge design to their product line. They all look the same year after year, version after version (boring ipod).
If SE was to try some of Nokia's queer designs they would end up out of the race.
So this is to the K610 as the W800 was to the K750?
BTW: is anyone else disappointed that the 2mp camera pics from the K610 are much much worse than the 2mp camera pics from the older K750? They appear to be linearly interpolated up from 1mp to my eye.

Yes, I am one of those who got disappointed on the camera of k610i/ k618i. The zoom will not function when the camera is in either 1MP or 2MP mode. which makes pictures taken blurry. both models dont have fm radio. which is another turn off to me.. but i love the design. do you know if i could fix the zoom of my k618i?
I spent a bit of time comparing this cute little phone to the w810.

My personal views are quite simply, they both portray quality and a very unique sense of style. However i agree with another comment posted, why did they opt for the name k618?? when it is clearly a w810 minus some of the capabilitys of the camera, (eg flash, i would have to play with one before id be convinced of the camera quality.) video capabilitys, and the ammount of internal storage available to the consumer.
On the other hand though i think SE have managed to produce a phone which in "baby step sizes" have managed to incorporate their phone of the year; K8oo's 3g capability, and smaller less vital picture blogging facility etc in to a phone which is lesser then the w810 in quality, but still have kept the miminmal requirements for a nice, economical, fun everyday phone which i believe will be easy on the pocket (both physically and financially!).
can i used the front camera to take picture instead of the main camera at the backside of the phone
i hope some one can help me
i have a SE K618i and a message pop-up saying memory almost full and i ignored it.
i go to write messages to send sms. when i'm typing it hanged, i cannot turn it off and all the keys are disabled so i quickly remove the battery and wait for 3 minutes and put it back.
now this is the problem
i turn ON my phone and i saw the SE logo and select phone instead of flight. after that it began to reboot and so on. now when i turn it ON, it's pure white on the lcd.
i got to the nearest SE service center but they don't have a software for it coz it was not released locally in the Philippines.
thanks
hey i have noticed a small circle just right above the screen. is that a front camera? if it is, how do you use it, like press what buttons? if it isn't, then what is it?
