Sony launches mylo
Speaking of unholy abominations, Sony decided to take some design tips from their own PSP, functionality from the OQO, usage scenarios from Nokia's 770 (and a wee dash dash of inspiration from Ixi's OGO), and mash it up all together into a single device: the mylo. The name refers to "my life online," ahem, which we assume probably has a little something to do with the Sony's old school MYLO / My Life Online, a wireless service Sony launched launched at PC Expo 2001 "to offer mobile users an original and personalized way to access information and entertainment content for work and play." (Yeah, that's specific.) This blast from the past now takes shape as a $350 WiFi-centric handheld features a slide-up 2.4-inch screen, VoIP capabilities via Skype, web access, media playback capabilities, 1GB flash, and a Memory Stick slot -- just think of it as a UX180P, you know, for kids.

no cell phone or camera? basically a really thick psp with a keyboard. LAME
I would totaly buy this... If I didn't have either a cellphone, laptop, or MP3 player.
I think they would mention it if it did.
Unholy abomination is right...holy hell that's ugly.
Where can I pick one up?
Huh?...
I got better things to do with my tine than play with *Toys*..
I want one. Not sure why, it just seems cool, and since I live in a city it gives me a way to get internet anywhere without bringing my laptop along.
put bluetooth in there so i can use my phone to connect when not inside a wifi zone and im game. that is if the screen have a nice rez like the nokia 770 :P
and I was hoping that it was the PSP phone.
Wouldn't it be better if this has a touchscreen and an operating system? Oh wait... this is just a stripped down version of their discontinued CLIE handhelds.
wait till you guys see the Mylo website! it's awesome ;) amazing flash..
When will it be available and does anyone have a website for more information?
UMD?
(or is it still not universal)
This is a PDA phone without the phone or pda functions.
Can't think of any situation this would be handy. Its a toy! Its a crappy mp3 / video player because of the storage / non widescreen. with a touchscreen it could be hacked into a great remote. Its shortcommings overshadows its feuters Should cost 99$.
Sony have lost the plot so badly, they could not find it, even with GPS.
This could have been something really good. I mean, my cell phone bill is stretching into the $200 a month range these days, including a lot of gprs crap. What I wouldn't give for a device that:
- has the latest and greatest in wifi, with strong reception
- has built in skype with easily upgradable firmware
- has the ability to play widescreen movies and various formats of music
- has an all-in-one IM package that can access msn, AIM, ICQ and I guess yahoo and google talk
- built on open source so that third party apps could be built to make it even more accessible
- has built in bluetooth for both audio listening and for calls
- built in autofocus camera with LED lighting.
- didn't look gay. (lol)
- didn't come from Sony; or if it did, didn't have Sony-centric things (atrac, memory stick, wasted sony software, closed, proprietary system.
Did I mention didn't look gay? Or maybe doesn't look like some kid's toy.
Actually, I'm hoping that the PSP2 if it ever comes out will have all the above, plus the current functionality, and a slide out keyboard. I'm still surprised that no one, not Sony, not any third party haven't come out with docking keyboard for the PSP. But then again, why expect a third party to do it - Sony's locked down the firmware tight and doesn't encourage any third party app development outside of UMD games.
One day, I'd love to ditch the cell phone...
I love the fact everyone is slating this;
So this is basically a music player, with video support and wi-fi. It also has mobile internet and skype and a long battery life and replacable memory (not capacity though)...
So if an iPod had come out yesterday with video support, wi-fi, mobile internet, skype a long battery life and replacable memory for $350 everyone would have been amazed and jumping for joy saying "when can I get one of these!"
lol at alex's post. you have a good point but apple wouldnt dare come out with something that had this little memory. i mean this thing is pretty much useless as a music/video player without substantial (20gig+) memory. im pretty disapointed in sony right now.
i also agree with pretty much everything that mark said.
why doesnt such a product exist? maybe sony once ps3 comes out sony will be able to focus more on this kind of thing and realize what people really want.
skype is great and all but its no substitute for a cell... not by a long shot.
It needs GPS and UMD. Then it could be the clie replacement.
Now as a concept it’s great. Granted I’m not going to buy one, but then I’m not in Sony’s target marketing group, that is obvious kids/students.
Now if you want a phone, camera, qwerty keyboard, bluetooth then there are lots of devices out there already. Look at the HTC Hermes. But this device is well out the price range of students.
Now as for the lack of memory, I don't know why people have the need to take ever bit of media that own every where they go. I’ve got a 2gb Nano and it has more music on there than I can listen to in a whole day. And when I’m bored of it I just change what’s on there.
If you follow the link it says 802.11B !! Only 12mb/s ? Lame, I thought after the psp they would upgrade this !!
For something which main use is wifi, they could have put 802.11G .
When will the stop making these things you have to carry. I want it installed right in my cranium.
Guys, I was going to say that what you're looking at is a $200 communicator with $149 worth of iPod nano functionality in it. Then again, it's a media player with built in WiFi which lets it outclass the iPod in terms of basic functions.
For those of you moaning about all the things it isn't and how you wouldn't use it because it's a toy: Duh! It isn't meant for the over 21 market. While I'm getting the Vaio UX 90 I see no reason why I shouldn't get this for my 13 year old nephew. For this segment the Mylo rocks, and the only thing that I feel Sony could have added to it for the price is a 1.3 megapixel swivel camera that would let the user videochat or take basic pictures.
ok, WHAT is with the STUPID companies from Sony to Danger to RIM to Nokia who refuse to make a device with built-in screen protection?
these things - be they a phone or a gaming device - either need a protective flip cover, clear or otherwise (i.e. Sony TH55, HP Jornada 56x series) or they need to be a flip device (IXI Mobile, Nintendo DS, Gameboy Advance, or the long-promised vapour hardware FlipStart - http://www.flipstartpc.com).
as someone who did a year of support on Sidekicks for T-Mobile, i cannot tell you how many thousands of people called in because they cracked their darn screens, including people who carried them in a case on their belt or put them in a case and then put them into their purse or pocket. it's a huge problem, and it is not covered by the warranty.
at one time, T-Mobile was charging U$70 to replace such broken devices, if you had an annual plan, with a refurb. they dropped that option as it was costing them huge. if you were pay-as-you-go, you were sh*t out of luck as there never was a replacement option for this problem.
we were trained to say: "yes, that sounds very frustrating" as if that is helpful to someone who has to shell out 400 smackers for a new phone, cause there are no deals when you already have service.
the BEST advice i could give to people who like to wear their devices on their hips like guns is to 1. get a hard case, and 2. put the screen facing the body.
there is no reason to buy it, because i have nokia e60 and ipod video, this is crap
so basically this is really just a crappy psp with a keyboard? great.
its offical, if i buy this im going to need a manpurse, er, i mean european-carryall, to carry my laptop, cell, psp and mp3 player.
The people who read this forum, the idiots who think everything has to be a cellphone - you are all.. idiots.
Its a WiFi SKYPE phone with multi media options, plain and simple. Get the sticks out of your asses.
Does it display MySpace correctly? If it does it will sell millions.
if there are IRC and instant messaging clients available for this thing i would so get it. i'd be able to stay in contact with my friends online when i go somewhere where i don't have the luxury of tanking my notebook with me :)
Sony - to stupid to come up with a NEW name?
http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_zdpcm/is_200111/ai_ziff18465
It's a next gen PSP concept I tell yer... :)
Yes, it does appear that Sony has trouble thinking of new names.
PS
PS2
PS3
PSP
Someone give Sony a hand please.
They just keep missing the mark.
@Alex
Except for the fact that this device has almost no storage and looks horrible.
I don't know how I'd use one of these anyways. Maybe once wifi networks cover more area, I'll pick up something like this. Not today.
I think if this had a USB port it would be a great device. You could keep music or videos on a portable hard drive or a flash drive and just play them from the drive. GPS would be nice too, but I guess it would drive up the price.
At Cornell University they have an incredible piece of scientific equipment known as the Tunneling Electron Microscope. Now, this microscope is so powerful that by firing electrons you can actually see images of the atom, the infinitesimally minute building blocks of our universe. Sony, if I were using that microscope right now, I still wouldn't be able to locate my interest in this product
(Thanks Fraiser!)
its kool but B band wireless is horrible and does it do aim and myspace ? and full web i need just summin that has wifi so i dont lug my laptop
Hope Mylo, real name Myles MacInnes (born 1978 in Skye)-the Scottish electronic musician agreed for Sony to use his name for Mylo (stands for "My Life Online"), .
"It doesn't have this, it doesn't do that - Sony have lost it!" etc etc ad infinitum ad nauseum.
Give it a rest for GOD DAMNED SAKE!
Listen to yourselves. Have we really got to a point where a product designed to do a specific task ot two absolutely MUST also be able to play video in any format, run games, do your taxes, clean your dishes, wipe your arse blah blah blah? And all for 50 quid. What are you on?
If it doesn't play video in a way that satisfies you, or do something it was never supposed or designed to do in the first place, go and buy something that does and stop whining or making completely irrelevant comments. This product has a purpose, it looks like it does it well. And it has a couple of other bonus features on the side.
After all, I don't see anyone complain that the iPod doesn't let one play TOCA Race Driver 3 or run a spreadsheet or order a takeaway.... oh, hang on, that's right, there is absolutely no reason why it should and it was never intended to, that's why.
PS - Perhaps Sony should stick an Apple logo on it and make it out of cheap and flimsy materials that mark and scratch easily. The pathetic iSheep fashionistas would run out and buy it in the millions and the media would be reporting on Apple's latest "technological revolution" (cf. the video iPod, the claimed portable video - ahem - "invention" from Jobs et al).
If they did that Sony could double the price, too.
Jay (iDon't and iWouldn't if you iPayed me)
WOW why wasn't this the PSP? you stuff a PSP into that design (which you could very easily) the PSP would have been perfect.
I use my PSP for the uses Sony lists this for but the only thing holding it back from being at my side at all times is good text entry.
1mb ram? i'm going to assume it also sports some shitty processor (read: shitty homebrew, if any), so the functions probably aren't going to extend outside of those it comes with ("IMing w/ friends" and not having to pay those "outrageous" fees on your cellphone).
i was expecting something more powerful and versatile, something to replace my cell, mp3, AND gp2x.
Talk about stupid negativity and anti-Sony bias at Engadget.
This thing is a great highly original device especially considering its also a Skype phone, keyboard, Media Player (Mpeg4 support), IM, WiFi, etc. Also, being Memory Stick Duos are ass cheap now (4GBs are going for a little more then a hundred dollars), its pretty upgradable.
>>If you follow the link it says 802.11B !! Only 12mb/s ? Lame, I thought after the psp they would upgrade this !!
For something which main use is wifi, they could have put 802.11G .
Hey dumb-ass, most mobile devices use 802.11b for a good reason, LOWER POWER CONSUMPTION, and the fact that 12mbs is more then enough for small devices. Don't need 54mbs to send an IM.
Your just a another redneck Sony-baser who doesn't have a clue what their talking about.
If it had more memory, this would have been what the PSP should have been in terms of non-game applications.
But I think the most important thing that people are missing, if you watch the video on Gizmodo, is that its HALF the size of the PSP.
With 4GB MS Duos coming out, I think I'll buy one of these bad boys. Plus I think it looks sexay!
Here is the Mylo site: http://www.sony.com/mylo
What OS does this run? Is it Palm OS? it's being constantly referred to as "the last member of the Clie family" and Clies ran Palm OS, you know...
Yet there's no reference as to what OS does this thing run.
If it does indeed run Palm OS, it'd be a good contender for the Palm lifedrive...
Yeah, but can it play Doom?
ummm, so why not just get an HTC Wizard that can do all this plus WAY more!
Well Apparently they are tired of people trying to do the same with the PSP. Maybe they should just let people do the same, as much as possible, with the PSP. And try to get some PSP games worth buying.
This is a smaller gizmo however, if you really like to squint to watch 'media', and need that nano sized hotness for your painted on jeans. But not quite a phone, with no camera capabilities. Hmm, I just wait and see what SonyEricsson makes instead.
Here's the dealbreaker and all you really need to know about this device: The resolution is 320x240.
Sorry, but I have a two year old mobile phone that has a better resolution than this :(
I mean even the PSP display has about twice as many pixels, and I'm not sure I would even settle for that for reading web pages. For web browsing at least, the N770 at 800x480 kills this device at the same price point. Skype support is a definite plus, got to give them that.
Also, what's up with no Bluetooth support?
A hand-held media player with WiFi? Sounds like Microsoft's new Zune player, only with more functionality.
O M G
45H music or 7H wifi with Stamina?? :D
I've got a cameraphone.. so no need of camera, and phone capability.. :D
It's way more wireless, and way mor media (1GB mem) then the PSP!!
I gonna switch like mad!!!
PSP for sale guys!! :D
Dear Sony:
1) Cancel this product
2) Release a cool fold-under keyboard for PSP
3) Release Skype disc for PSP
4) Profit.
Competing with your own large-screened, Wi-fi enabled gaming system by releasing another large-screen Wi-fi enabled *something-or-other* just doesn't make good business sense
This came out years ago:
http://news.sel.sony.com/en/press_room/consumer/computer_peripheral/storage_sol_others/release/8226.html
Does it run linux?
Has anyone realized that this device has a horrible battery life (estimated 3.5 hr of talk time according to their official site) and costs almost twice as much as the PSP? How about the fact that is has a crappy 65000 colour QVGA screen? This is pretty much a toned down version of the PSP without gaming functionality.
Perhaps Sony should keep using the same ugly designs that Apple has been using for like the past couple of years... Whatever DID happen to Apple's Creative Team?!!??!!
It's a Nokia 770 for the terminally stupid!
Hey! Good job Sony! You probably just finished off the PSP.
Yes, I think it could be better.
However, whoever designed/did their website should be fired. Actually, scratch that, they should be rolled in cat urine and fried for the worst flash job ever.
Sony should hire all of you to get good things on the market... Nice try Sony.
WHAT is this about?! HEY, SONY! FOCUS! PS3!! Now get back to work!
-----------------
AND JUST INCASE YOU NEED A REMINDER, IF YOU MISS THIS HOLIDAY CYCLE YOU ARE, TO QUOTE A FAMOUS FRENCH POET, FUX’ED!
why not to buy this...
A) wifi access points are widely available, yet not everywhere you need, and most are encrypted, so portability is lost, PLUS newer devices are going to have CELL PHONE AND WIFI capabilities come this fall
B) too little space to be used as a media player, yea you can argue 4 gig upgrade on a duo, whoopdy duo! that isn't near enough space for decent vids and quite a bit of music, plus you add roughly $120 for the 4 gig upgrade, $470 ain't too cheap for what you're getting, buy a PSP, and freakin run some free skype workaround, and you have the same product, buy a keyboard attachment, and you're set, still cheaper!
C)it's Sony, so they'll screw up on the software integration end, and it'll be hard to add files to it seamlessly, and won't back it w/ good customer support, and the product will die out in 6 months
"Yeah, but can it play Doom?"
What a retard.
It's a UMPC. Not a smart phone, not a PDA, not a portable gaming system. Look it up before saying anything stupid.
quote from the article: "just think of it as a UX180P, you know, for kids."
I would refer to it as a UX180P for, um, people that don't want to spend a grand or two on a UMPC. Engadget writers can be so annoyingly elitist and sarcastic, and usually border on "slightly humerous" with their best attemps at a joke.
the website for this product is
http://www.sony.com/mylo
After looking at the website and noticing it's smaller than the PSP and does more... Bye, PSP! (hardly ever played games on the psp anyway)
Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!
oh wait I already have a psp
I went to MS (Cingular 8125) because Palm f'ed up their WiFi on the PalmOS Treos (and the form factor - blech).
Got a new, unlocked Wizard on Ebay for $350, and another $30 for a 1 GB MiniSD, and it does EVERYTHING that the mylo does (but a software hack allows 802.11G) plus it's a phone with 1.3 mpix camera, A2DP and TONS of 3rd party apps.
In other words, ALL the fun of the mylo, plus tons more.
Somehow, I suspect Sony CAN'T come out with a phone outside the Symbian OS, because all these bastard children are so close, but miss the boat.
Though this MIGHT work for that combo mouse/couch potato that's tired of balancing a laptop on their knees. :p
1. The HPC Tornado whatever can't be bought from a store like BestBuy with a product replacement warranty
2. This product seems to be competing with the Tmobile Sidekick and the Nokia 770 - in my opinion it beats the Sidekick for the Instant Messaging plus WIFI option and it beats the Nokia 770 for the memory and HIGHLY probably performance edge
3. I didn't know it was smaller than the PSP, i was hoping it would be around the same size ...
4. Depending on if the screen size is big enough and if it reads .pdf files i have found my laptop replacement for class ;-D
@teslim bruce : This isn't an advertisement you retard. It's a blog to comment on. The comments are supposed to be about the topic. Why don't you pay for advertisement or just shut up and stop selling stolen goods.
Anyways, How is the name mylo not original? it doesn't sound anything like the PS1(2,3) etc. Its a cool unit but they should have just made an accessory to make the PSP like this.
Given the resolution of the display, the 802.11b, and no mention of bluetooth, I think my Nokia 770 stomps all over it.
If this has a backlit display and AIM I would purchase it. No one in their right mind uses Google IM.
Mylo looks interesting from a 1 great tool for 1 key function school of thought.
My 6 month old Windows Mobile phone (Qtek 9100) roams to Wifi, allows me to use Skype and includes Windows Messenger. When Wifi's not available, it roams to GPRs. And it works.
The cost to purchase from Vodefone was lower than the list of price of mylo...
This product range gets particularly interesting when ubiquitous wireless broadband (Wimax?) gets real!
If anyone wants to start a mylo blog, MyloBlog.com is for sale...
Ok pay attention big companies! This is a stupid device ok! I already have devices that do this. I want a device that is a true all in one device that fits in my pocket and actually works well! I want a cell phone, digital camera, digital video camera, media player, internet browser, support for EVERY cell phone network, support for wifi and Bluetooth, PDA functionality, QWERTY keyboard, USB ports, and I want all of the parts of the device to work as good as if the parts were separate devices. The device will need to have a lot of RAM for multi tasking and will need to have at least 2GB of flash internal storage with the ability to expand the storage through use of flash cards. It will also need to have exceptional battery life and a big high quality screen. Did I mention that the device also needs to be under $1,000? First company to make such a device gets my money. Ready set GO!
Here's a video of Mylo. I wanted 2 buy it when i watched da video, but after reading this i dun feel like buying it anymore... It sounds really kool though!

It would be perfect for me. I am deaf and have no need for a cell phone per say. I use a blackberry, but that has a phone feature that I have to pay for even though I have no use for it.
Thank you sony, from the deaf community.
Its just like a psp but thicker, it has a keyboard, and yahoo messanger.
All right, let's think here, idiots. You can google your arse off, I DARE you to find anything WITH wi-fi AND a qwerty keyboard. Those damn palms are dirt cheap but no keyboard and lousy battery life. Oh look, a Treo: oh wait, service plan, $450 price tag. Look, a UMPC...whoa! A thousand bucks?
Seriously, a semi-cheap, nifty little device that lets you chat with your buds and listen to a bit of music and a vid on youtube. Quit bitching:(oh, it should have PSP functionality..!) Did you READ what MYLO stands for? It means My Life Online, not My Raggedy Ass in the Basement Staring At My Damn Psp.
Quit whining. Like they say, paint it white and put an apple on it and everyone would be absolutely thrilled! I could be $400 and everyone would buy it.
Sony is on the right path, do you really need to drag your ENTIRE slop of media around with you? Besides, mem stick duos are cheap, you can get a four gig for less than $100.
Okay, I'm done,
If anyone even reads this comment, reply. Let me know what you think.
Im contemplating buying it and i agree with you. Its meant for My life online the media features are put there to round out the device and not make it a single featured device. But yeah i trying to buy and i found your comment helpful
thanks
There is definitely a strong bias against Sony in the majority of these comments. I like to try to keep an open mind when I see new products. We should take the Sony Mylo for what it is, its simply a portable multimedia wifi centric communication device. I think what majority of consumers are doing these days is buying in excess. Do we need 30GB worth of movies, keeping in mind that these movies will be encoded at 320x240 which takes significantly less data to store, you can fit 3-4 movies on 1GB memory using MP4 format. People fail to remember that with larger storage space comes problems, any device with moving parts is more likely to break. Flash based memory is more stable for portable devices which are prone to drops and bumps. Finally to the guy that was asking for Wifi g speeds, bigger isn’t always better, same with faster isn’t always better, this falls under the category of excess, IM and VOIP don’t use much bandwidth, so wireless g would be pointless and kills the batteries.
I'm an American, but I feel we are way behind on technology, mainly because the way we embrace new technologies or innovative products. Look at Asia, they adopted Skype pretty quickly, its quite popular in Asia, but here, we don't see the value in Skype. Even though it is the cheapest way to communicate, at 2 cents per minute being the average, and the possibility of free calling if you call another Skype user any where in the world. I for one am pretty psyched about the VOIP Skype in this product, it allows people that don't really need all that much mobility, and don't want to pay the higher price of landlines, its simply a cheaper solution.
Lets not be delusional people, there’s only so much technology you can pack into one portable device before it becomes well, not portable. Look at cellphones for example, even though they have tons of technology packed into them, mp3 player, camera, video recorder, internet, bluetooth, the list goes on, but if you've ever used these high end phones, you'll notice, they don't really have outstanding quality in any of those departments. The more technology you pack into portable devices the more quality of each feature suffers. My point is, I'm happy the Mylo has minimal features, but aimed at one specific audience, which keeps quality high and size small. Products that try to be everything to everyone are bound to fail, because we are all different, we have different needs, so try to understand that before you start shouting out that’s a dumb product just because it doesn't match your needs.
This thing is brilliant. Just perfect travel companion for me, esp traveling onboard in WiFi-enabled flight...with 7 hours battery life, that's hot!
Great product. I may actually buy it. Don't want to be glued to the laptop or desktop at home, so a Skype IM, web mobile device is pretty cool.
Did noone ELSE really check out the product as I did?
This thing RUNS LINUX.
Obviously people did not check before shooting their mouth off. The SINGLE downside to this product is that it does not have EDGE/EVDO. It has everything else that other devices LACK.
good internal storage + OS room(1gb),
mass storage (as big a stick you can get),
usb (cord included IN the box),
wifi (802.11b is sufficent),
FULL qwerty keyboard (NOT like the sidekick (great keyboard but NO cmd keys for terminal), ALL treos (HORRIBLE keyboard))
great battery life (what you want 30 day batter life? Get real.),
ARM processor,
and an OPEN OS in a GREAT form factor.
I am on the pre-order. Sony gets my dime this time.
It looks like the hoverboard from back to the future
It's really interesting but I'm worried about the company mash up. I'm really glad that sony ditched microsoft but it would be nice to use other companies equipment (why not load trillian instead of yahoo and google?) Skype's quality has something to be desired for at times. And it would be nice to be able to write in a format other then .txt (open office anyone?)
It is a really neat device and I want one but I wonder what the competition will come out with.
uh, well, the way i read the article in GI, it sounded like a sidekick killer, but from the looks of it, it has a way to go. they need to add a cell phone into that, and then they'd have my interest. a built in camera wouldn't hurt either.
I jus bought this thing and i have this to say..
as of right now, mylo is usless as hell, but goin through its files when i connected it to my computer, i realized that it's potential is great. They put up sum type of firmware upgrade up last thursday, which, when i downloaded, gave me ideas (It's a closed system device which sucks ass, but there's most likely a way to get past that). Sony is gay for real because everything they put out just almost does what you could only dream a handheld gadget could do, but then it just doesn't.. and that sux balls..
Some one put up or make some hacks 4 this thing soon, please!!
you stupid people dont you get it. it has internet, skype phone, music player, keyboeard. this is way better than tha psp or any other phone. plus no monthly fees or anything just a wireliess netwook.
where can i buy one from ?
i wish it had a camera and played games !!!!!
but it is good enough 4 me !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

This isn't targeted at people who are big into cell phones or who always carry their laptop or UMPC. I have one and LOVE it. Of course I'm in Baghdad. We're not authorized to have cell phones where I'm at (for good reasons I don't have time to explain) and phone cards can be expensive over a period of 15 months. Also I have seen too mant laptops get messed up by the 140 degree heat and all the sand and dust. I can make calls on this at any wifi hotspot, and use it to keep up with my instant messenger which is my primary means of communication, and I can even use it for email (all with NO MONTHLY FEES). So if you have a laptop and a cell that you always have with you this isn't for you. But if you can't afford/don't want/don't have a laptop or monthly cell bill and live on a wifi rich college campus this would be perfect.
