Sony launches mylo
Speaking of unholy abominations, Sony decided to take some design tips from their own PSP, functionality from the OQO, usage scenarios from Nokia's 770 (and a wee dash dash of inspiration from Ixi's OGO), and mash it up all together into a single device: the mylo. The name refers to "my life online," ahem, which we assume probably has a little something to do with the Sony's old school MYLO / My Life Online, a wireless service Sony launched launched at PC Expo 2001 "to offer mobile users an original and personalized way to access information and entertainment content for work and play." (Yeah, that's specific.) This blast from the past now takes shape as a $350 WiFi-centric handheld features a slide-up 2.4-inch screen, VoIP capabilities via Skype, web access, media playback capabilities, 1GB flash, and a Memory Stick slot -- just think of it as a UX180P, you know, for kids.

A hand-held media player with WiFi? Sounds like Microsoft's new Zune player, only with more functionality.
O M G
45H music or 7H wifi with Stamina?? :D
I've got a cameraphone.. so no need of camera, and phone capability.. :D
It's way more wireless, and way mor media (1GB mem) then the PSP!!
I gonna switch like mad!!!
PSP for sale guys!! :D
Dear Sony:
1) Cancel this product
2) Release a cool fold-under keyboard for PSP
3) Release Skype disc for PSP
4) Profit.
Competing with your own large-screened, Wi-fi enabled gaming system by releasing another large-screen Wi-fi enabled *something-or-other* just doesn't make good business sense
This came out years ago:
http://news.sel.sony.com/en/press_room/consumer/computer_peripheral/storage_sol_others/release/8226.html
Does it run linux?
Has anyone realized that this device has a horrible battery life (estimated 3.5 hr of talk time according to their official site) and costs almost twice as much as the PSP? How about the fact that is has a crappy 65000 colour QVGA screen? This is pretty much a toned down version of the PSP without gaming functionality.
Perhaps Sony should keep using the same ugly designs that Apple has been using for like the past couple of years... Whatever DID happen to Apple's Creative Team?!!??!!
It's a Nokia 770 for the terminally stupid!
Hey! Good job Sony! You probably just finished off the PSP.
Yes, I think it could be better.
However, whoever designed/did their website should be fired. Actually, scratch that, they should be rolled in cat urine and fried for the worst flash job ever.
Sony should hire all of you to get good things on the market... Nice try Sony.
WHAT is this about?! HEY, SONY! FOCUS! PS3!! Now get back to work!
-----------------
AND JUST INCASE YOU NEED A REMINDER, IF YOU MISS THIS HOLIDAY CYCLE YOU ARE, TO QUOTE A FAMOUS FRENCH POET, FUX’ED!
why not to buy this...
A) wifi access points are widely available, yet not everywhere you need, and most are encrypted, so portability is lost, PLUS newer devices are going to have CELL PHONE AND WIFI capabilities come this fall
B) too little space to be used as a media player, yea you can argue 4 gig upgrade on a duo, whoopdy duo! that isn't near enough space for decent vids and quite a bit of music, plus you add roughly $120 for the 4 gig upgrade, $470 ain't too cheap for what you're getting, buy a PSP, and freakin run some free skype workaround, and you have the same product, buy a keyboard attachment, and you're set, still cheaper!
C)it's Sony, so they'll screw up on the software integration end, and it'll be hard to add files to it seamlessly, and won't back it w/ good customer support, and the product will die out in 6 months
"Yeah, but can it play Doom?"
What a retard.
It's a UMPC. Not a smart phone, not a PDA, not a portable gaming system. Look it up before saying anything stupid.
quote from the article: "just think of it as a UX180P, you know, for kids."
I would refer to it as a UX180P for, um, people that don't want to spend a grand or two on a UMPC. Engadget writers can be so annoyingly elitist and sarcastic, and usually border on "slightly humerous" with their best attemps at a joke.
the website for this product is
http://www.sony.com/mylo
After looking at the website and noticing it's smaller than the PSP and does more... Bye, PSP! (hardly ever played games on the psp anyway)
Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!
oh wait I already have a psp
I went to MS (Cingular 8125) because Palm f'ed up their WiFi on the PalmOS Treos (and the form factor - blech).
Got a new, unlocked Wizard on Ebay for $350, and another $30 for a 1 GB MiniSD, and it does EVERYTHING that the mylo does (but a software hack allows 802.11G) plus it's a phone with 1.3 mpix camera, A2DP and TONS of 3rd party apps.
In other words, ALL the fun of the mylo, plus tons more.
Somehow, I suspect Sony CAN'T come out with a phone outside the Symbian OS, because all these bastard children are so close, but miss the boat.
Though this MIGHT work for that combo mouse/couch potato that's tired of balancing a laptop on their knees. :p
1. The HPC Tornado whatever can't be bought from a store like BestBuy with a product replacement warranty
2. This product seems to be competing with the Tmobile Sidekick and the Nokia 770 - in my opinion it beats the Sidekick for the Instant Messaging plus WIFI option and it beats the Nokia 770 for the memory and HIGHLY probably performance edge
3. I didn't know it was smaller than the PSP, i was hoping it would be around the same size ...
4. Depending on if the screen size is big enough and if it reads .pdf files i have found my laptop replacement for class ;-D
@teslim bruce : This isn't an advertisement you retard. It's a blog to comment on. The comments are supposed to be about the topic. Why don't you pay for advertisement or just shut up and stop selling stolen goods.
Anyways, How is the name mylo not original? it doesn't sound anything like the PS1(2,3) etc. Its a cool unit but they should have just made an accessory to make the PSP like this.
Given the resolution of the display, the 802.11b, and no mention of bluetooth, I think my Nokia 770 stomps all over it.
If this has a backlit display and AIM I would purchase it. No one in their right mind uses Google IM.
Mylo looks interesting from a 1 great tool for 1 key function school of thought.
My 6 month old Windows Mobile phone (Qtek 9100) roams to Wifi, allows me to use Skype and includes Windows Messenger. When Wifi's not available, it roams to GPRs. And it works.
The cost to purchase from Vodefone was lower than the list of price of mylo...
This product range gets particularly interesting when ubiquitous wireless broadband (Wimax?) gets real!
If anyone wants to start a mylo blog, MyloBlog.com is for sale...
Ok pay attention big companies! This is a stupid device ok! I already have devices that do this. I want a device that is a true all in one device that fits in my pocket and actually works well! I want a cell phone, digital camera, digital video camera, media player, internet browser, support for EVERY cell phone network, support for wifi and Bluetooth, PDA functionality, QWERTY keyboard, USB ports, and I want all of the parts of the device to work as good as if the parts were separate devices. The device will need to have a lot of RAM for multi tasking and will need to have at least 2GB of flash internal storage with the ability to expand the storage through use of flash cards. It will also need to have exceptional battery life and a big high quality screen. Did I mention that the device also needs to be under $1,000? First company to make such a device gets my money. Ready set GO!
Here's a video of Mylo. I wanted 2 buy it when i watched da video, but after reading this i dun feel like buying it anymore... It sounds really kool though!

It would be perfect for me. I am deaf and have no need for a cell phone per say. I use a blackberry, but that has a phone feature that I have to pay for even though I have no use for it.
Thank you sony, from the deaf community.
Its just like a psp but thicker, it has a keyboard, and yahoo messanger.
All right, let's think here, idiots. You can google your arse off, I DARE you to find anything WITH wi-fi AND a qwerty keyboard. Those damn palms are dirt cheap but no keyboard and lousy battery life. Oh look, a Treo: oh wait, service plan, $450 price tag. Look, a UMPC...whoa! A thousand bucks?
Seriously, a semi-cheap, nifty little device that lets you chat with your buds and listen to a bit of music and a vid on youtube. Quit bitching:(oh, it should have PSP functionality..!) Did you READ what MYLO stands for? It means My Life Online, not My Raggedy Ass in the Basement Staring At My Damn Psp.
Quit whining. Like they say, paint it white and put an apple on it and everyone would be absolutely thrilled! I could be $400 and everyone would buy it.
Sony is on the right path, do you really need to drag your ENTIRE slop of media around with you? Besides, mem stick duos are cheap, you can get a four gig for less than $100.
Okay, I'm done,
If anyone even reads this comment, reply. Let me know what you think.
Im contemplating buying it and i agree with you. Its meant for My life online the media features are put there to round out the device and not make it a single featured device. But yeah i trying to buy and i found your comment helpful
thanks
There is definitely a strong bias against Sony in the majority of these comments. I like to try to keep an open mind when I see new products. We should take the Sony Mylo for what it is, its simply a portable multimedia wifi centric communication device. I think what majority of consumers are doing these days is buying in excess. Do we need 30GB worth of movies, keeping in mind that these movies will be encoded at 320x240 which takes significantly less data to store, you can fit 3-4 movies on 1GB memory using MP4 format. People fail to remember that with larger storage space comes problems, any device with moving parts is more likely to break. Flash based memory is more stable for portable devices which are prone to drops and bumps. Finally to the guy that was asking for Wifi g speeds, bigger isn’t always better, same with faster isn’t always better, this falls under the category of excess, IM and VOIP don’t use much bandwidth, so wireless g would be pointless and kills the batteries.
I'm an American, but I feel we are way behind on technology, mainly because the way we embrace new technologies or innovative products. Look at Asia, they adopted Skype pretty quickly, its quite popular in Asia, but here, we don't see the value in Skype. Even though it is the cheapest way to communicate, at 2 cents per minute being the average, and the possibility of free calling if you call another Skype user any where in the world. I for one am pretty psyched about the VOIP Skype in this product, it allows people that don't really need all that much mobility, and don't want to pay the higher price of landlines, its simply a cheaper solution.
Lets not be delusional people, there’s only so much technology you can pack into one portable device before it becomes well, not portable. Look at cellphones for example, even though they have tons of technology packed into them, mp3 player, camera, video recorder, internet, bluetooth, the list goes on, but if you've ever used these high end phones, you'll notice, they don't really have outstanding quality in any of those departments. The more technology you pack into portable devices the more quality of each feature suffers. My point is, I'm happy the Mylo has minimal features, but aimed at one specific audience, which keeps quality high and size small. Products that try to be everything to everyone are bound to fail, because we are all different, we have different needs, so try to understand that before you start shouting out that’s a dumb product just because it doesn't match your needs.
This thing is brilliant. Just perfect travel companion for me, esp traveling onboard in WiFi-enabled flight...with 7 hours battery life, that's hot!
Great product. I may actually buy it. Don't want to be glued to the laptop or desktop at home, so a Skype IM, web mobile device is pretty cool.
Did noone ELSE really check out the product as I did?
This thing RUNS LINUX.
Obviously people did not check before shooting their mouth off. The SINGLE downside to this product is that it does not have EDGE/EVDO. It has everything else that other devices LACK.
good internal storage + OS room(1gb),
mass storage (as big a stick you can get),
usb (cord included IN the box),
wifi (802.11b is sufficent),
FULL qwerty keyboard (NOT like the sidekick (great keyboard but NO cmd keys for terminal), ALL treos (HORRIBLE keyboard))
great battery life (what you want 30 day batter life? Get real.),
ARM processor,
and an OPEN OS in a GREAT form factor.
I am on the pre-order. Sony gets my dime this time.
It looks like the hoverboard from back to the future
It's really interesting but I'm worried about the company mash up. I'm really glad that sony ditched microsoft but it would be nice to use other companies equipment (why not load trillian instead of yahoo and google?) Skype's quality has something to be desired for at times. And it would be nice to be able to write in a format other then .txt (open office anyone?)
It is a really neat device and I want one but I wonder what the competition will come out with.
uh, well, the way i read the article in GI, it sounded like a sidekick killer, but from the looks of it, it has a way to go. they need to add a cell phone into that, and then they'd have my interest. a built in camera wouldn't hurt either.
ummm, so why not just get an HTC Wizard that can do all this plus WAY more!
http://www.laptopbatteryclub.com/
I jus bought this thing and i have this to say..
as of right now, mylo is usless as hell, but goin through its files when i connected it to my computer, i realized that it's potential is great. They put up sum type of firmware upgrade up last thursday, which, when i downloaded, gave me ideas (It's a closed system device which sucks ass, but there's most likely a way to get past that). Sony is gay for real because everything they put out just almost does what you could only dream a handheld gadget could do, but then it just doesn't.. and that sux balls..
Some one put up or make some hacks 4 this thing soon, please!!
you stupid people dont you get it. it has internet, skype phone, music player, keyboeard. this is way better than tha psp or any other phone. plus no monthly fees or anything just a wireliess netwook.
where can i buy one from ?
i wish it had a camera and played games !!!!!
but it is good enough 4 me !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

This isn't targeted at people who are big into cell phones or who always carry their laptop or UMPC. I have one and LOVE it. Of course I'm in Baghdad. We're not authorized to have cell phones where I'm at (for good reasons I don't have time to explain) and phone cards can be expensive over a period of 15 months. Also I have seen too mant laptops get messed up by the 140 degree heat and all the sand and dust. I can make calls on this at any wifi hotspot, and use it to keep up with my instant messenger which is my primary means of communication, and I can even use it for email (all with NO MONTHLY FEES). So if you have a laptop and a cell that you always have with you this isn't for you. But if you can't afford/don't want/don't have a laptop or monthly cell bill and live on a wifi rich college campus this would be perfect.
