Buffalo's FTD-W924ADSR/SV 19-inch widescreen LCD
This thing has a name only a mother could love, but Buffalo's FTD-W924ADSR/SV has enough spec goodness to help us overlook its unsightly model number. The 19-inch 16:10 widescreen display runs at a 1,440 x 900 resolution, with a 5ms response time and 800:1 contrast ratio. For inputs the LCD can take VGA and DVI-D, along with audio input to power the back-mounted stereo speakers. According to recent sales numbers, 19-inch LCDs seem to be the new black, so we're guessing this display should do pretty well for itself when Buffalo drops it in a week or so for some as-of-yet undisclosed price.

I hope the 19 in wide screen lcd monitors are good because I just purchased my first computer and it has one.

looks nice but im still thinking about those new apple displays with the pricedrop :)

Hm, that's a fairly low resolution for a 19-inch LCD. My iMac's 17-inch screen is 1440x900, and a Dell 20.1-inch widescreen LCD has a resolution of 1680x1050.
Brian @ Aug 9th 2006 11:33AM
Why not 1920 x 1080?
Mike @ Aug 9th 2006 11:42AM

That is exactly what I was thinking. Why not just make it support 1080. Seems like a lack of thought on their part. It would be nice to have a "desk sized" 1080 monitor, especially if they keep the price low enough for programmers on a budget to afford!

i just got my first lcd and OMG im loving it, its a 19 inch hanns-g at 1440x900 1:700 for only $200 bucks retail at microcenter started playing halflife ep1 with teh wide screen OOooooOOo.
scott @ Aug 9th 2006 11:54AM
one thing though... 16:10 = 8:5
third grade math...

1. stand looks flimsy.
2. You can get a 19" 5ms widescreen from newegg now for somewhere near $180 with no shipping... I'm getting one myself :)
...Although mine is only 700:1 contrast ratio..
Nick @ Aug 9th 2006 12:15PM
Hey magic,
you can get that same 19 inch Haans monitor for $109 from PC Connections. :)
and the buffalo looks pretty sweet.

"That is exactly what I was thinking. Why not just make it support 1080. Seems like a lack of thought on their part."
It "supports" 1080i just fine; it'll just be downrezzed.
Oh, you mean why not have a native 1920x1080 pixel size?
Because that's a 16:9 aspect ratio, for one. This, like all other PC monitors, is a 16:10 screen. The reason being that most people like to do other things with their PC's besides watching HDTV - the *only* format that actually has a native 16:9 aspect ratio. (DVD's have a 16:9 anamorphic pixel ratio, but the films contained on them are never, ever shot or displayed at that ratio. It's not a ratio that exists in the film industry, so having a 16:9 display is just as meaningless for watching DVD's as 16:10 is.)
Every time a widescreen monitor comes out, there are people that whine about the fact that it's 16:10 and not 16:9, as if 16:9 is some kind of standard. It's not, except for HDTV, in which case, why aren't you just buying an HDTV monitor? If what you want to do is watch HDTV, then fine, buy an HDTV. This and other widescreen PC monitors are intended for more than just that. (Many, many PC applications benefit from a wide screen, but too wide and you're just losing vertical screen space.)

take away the speakers, make the frame black, and give it 1080p resolution and I'll buy two right now.
otherwise, I'm happy with my 4:3 19" displays I've got right now.
Magus @ Aug 9th 2006 1:33PM
I'm not aware of any sub 24' lcd that supports 1920x1200.
Aside from my 17' dell laptop lcd.
I was looking for quite some time before i finally settled on 24' 2405fpw i have.
Isn't anyone else bothered by this?
24' is a lot of realestate

"Isn't anyone else bothered by this?

No, I'm not bothered by it, but I am reminded that I need to pick up a 2407fpw for my XPS. How is that setup working out for you?
Juaquin @ Aug 9th 2006 3:01PM
I just got an Acer 19" Widescreen for a little less than $200 from NewEgg. 8ms response, 1440x900, 500:1 contrast. I have to say I'm impressed. For being a cheap monitor, I don't see anything cheap. Backlighting is good and even, colors are vibrant, refresh is fast enough to play games, and lots of picture adjustments in the menu. Only downside is no DVI input.
I was hesistant to move from CRT to LCD (being a gamer) but I don't regret it.
Jake @ Aug 9th 2006 3:29PM
The reason you're not seeing resolutions in the 1900x1080 range on monitors less than 20" is simple - it would be a nightmare on the eyes. Everyone knows that LCD's are fixed pixel displays and should be run at their native resolution for optimum picture quality. If the native resolution is that high on that small of a monitor, text would be a pain to read. The only application for which it would make sense is HDTV, and even then it's questionable. I challenge you to set up a 19" 720p monitor and a 19" 1080p monitor side by side playing HD video and see if you can tell a difference. I doubt it. So the 1440x900 resolution on this display (and most other widescreen 19" lcd's these days) is one of practicality and readability. Anything much higher would just be a headache.
Magus @ Aug 9th 2006 3:40PM
@ I'm With Stupid
Depends on the application...
For video editing 3d works out perfect i have a 19' tube on the side for color acuracy and final versions of things.
Most gaming works pretty well asmuing the rig can handle the rez. The only downside I encountered is older games like diablo 2 without widescreen support. *cringe*
Definetly a worth wile investment, all tho i was initially concearned 24' is too large of an area to work with...
@ Juaquin
I would have glady purchased a 19 - 21 for my work/desktop.
I would dissagree wiht that, there are plenty 17' non wide aspect LCDs with 1280x1024. 17' laptop lcd has 1920x1200 and its the perfect size and rez for every day use. In relation that would be like 1280x1024 on a ~15' lcd.

I got this display (at least the same design) from Fujitsu-Siemens and i must say that i will never again buy a 4:3 screen. 16:10 just breaks it. And by the way, the stand isnt flimsy at all. Its definitly a good buy, especially with that 800:1 contrast
Cyrus @ Aug 24th 2006 11:50AM
im looking into buying a 19" widescreen LCD. The thing that is hold me back is, i love diablo 2, starcraft, and some older style games. im afraid of how they will look on a widescreen monitor, or if there is anyway to make it look regular or will the game always looked "stretched"??
