The Boy Genius Report: Exclusive Cingular Treo 750 Pics

Field report tidbits from Engadget's mobile insider, the Boy Genius.
We have to say, the Boy Genius is damned good. Ok, now that thats out of the way, Engadget Mobile would like present to you exclusive pictures of a Cingular-branded Treo 750. Yeah, that's right, that's the Treo Lennon, and as we found out before from BG, is coming to Cingy. Yes it has UMTS. Yes it has HSPDA. And no, it doesn't have a front facing camera for video calling -- sorry, we're gonna have to live with it. More pics after the break!

Wifi? Ram? RELEASE DATE!!!!?????
Whoa! Wicked! Back goes the CU500!
same questions as number 1 but i need to know off contract pricing and i let my own views serve off here with UMTS and HSPDA im guessing no wifi for cingular will state you have enough connection options so theres no need for wifi
Windows Mobile 5.0???? Or icky Palm OS?
so as a t-mo user i'm screwed right because this thing has umts but not edge? someone help me out here because my 650 has seen better days and that blackberry pearl is looking like a nice alternative if i can't use the treo 750.
It's WinMob, so that might be that it includes WiFi, or if it doesn't WinMob has drivers for Palm's WiFi card. Which is kind of strange as Palm doesn't have drivers for the non-WinMob Treos... I dig it nonetheless!
It ofcourse has EDGE dude... UMTS/EDGE/GPRS
What the heck, the Treo appears to get fatter and wider over time, looking more and more like the Berries. Don't think I like that. Blah!
will someone at engadget please buy boy genius a better camera? you'd think with the access he allegedly has, he might have a decent camphone.
Was it supposed to have a forward facing cam for video calling - and Cingular had it removed?
...and yeah GadgetFreak, that thing looks twice the size of a regula mobile phone! Do dudes actually hold that thing up to the side of their head and talk into it?
I ordered an LG CU500 a few days ago which should arrive soon...I guess as long as I have the cash, it shouldn't be a problem to upgrade later this year, since, after all, all you need is cash, and cash is all you need.
Hey! let's not give him a hard time for his pics. Maybe the pics are blurry cuz he was shaking from the excitement. Or probably he's got one of those undercover cameras (a la 007) At least it's something. :)
"will someone at engadget please buy boy genius a better camera? you'd think with the access he allegedly has, he might have a decent camphone."
Better pics = easier to ID = Boy Genius or his source gets shown the door and we don't get these pics anymore.
Musicman - I am taking back my CU500 due to its inability to sync calendar events from any PIM. I'll wait on this Treo upgrade.
That`s cool... the antenaless Treo at the end!!!!
So Cingular is getting it first more all companies should eventually get it? I am with Sprint and was going to upgrade to the 700p (have a 600) but will probably wait for this.
Does anybody know when Cingular will have its UMTS network up and running nationwide?
I hope Boy Genius is enough of a genius to realize that those marks at strategic points around the bezel of the screen are almost certainly there in order to identify where pictures of a pre-release phone came from.
If he's enough of a genius, he used photoshop to doctor their locations and then applied some blur filter to hide his handiwork.
Why can verizon come out first with phones like this? Instead of waiting another 2 freaking years for it to come out?
Looks like a BlackBerry. Why would you want anything running Windows Mobile 5.0 anyway? A 5 year old could hack it.
Hmmm .... with that type of connectivity, it's almost enough to make me jump from T-Mobile. And it would be nice to be supporting Palm again with my $$, instead of sending them off to i-Mate and QTek. I could probably even learn to live with the square screen. Very interesting.

Wait, so is this a Palm or WinMob 5 Treo 750? i like the loss of an antenna and the hopefull(!) inclusion of WiFi(?) support, will definately make me want one of these, can anyone tell me if its windows or not or if it has wifi or not? and if its in a comment i missed, just point me to the comment
thanks
- I heard (from a Cingular employee) that the Lennon would have Wi-Fi. Can you confirm this?
- I read (About.com) that The Lennon could be out in as little as 6 weeks (approx. Sept. 25th). Is this the approximate USA release date? Or will we get it in the States later? If so, when?
- Treo 750w = Lennon version.
- Treo 750p = Nitro version. A low-end version to cover the market by providing a lower priced model.
- Treo 750w and 750p are excusive to Cingular. But Cingular is good. I use them exclusively now for strong coverage and good no-roaming-charge and rollover-minute plans. I have a friend who drives all over the 48 contigous states for work and loves Cingular service wherever she goes. She has used it for years and won't switch services.
I have only found one area where I traveled and had no Cingular coverage. It was a small town in FL where only persons who had AllTel could use their cell phones. Otherwise, service has been excellent.
Why can't they just make a treo with internal GPS unit?
I'm tired of all these new releases with only one new feature and still no damn flash on the camera.
What about the fall out between Palm and Palm Source? I thought the next Palm OS was on the rocks. How does that play into this release of a new Palm version coming out?
I heard that there will be a Treo 680 for Cingular running only on EDGE and with the Palm OS. WTF!??!??! Also, what kind of camera will the Treo 750 have? 1.3MP??? Any more rumors about a release date??? I am ready NOW!!!!!!
Are you people serious?
Geri- Unless the person you know does the advertising or is a major big-wig for Cingular, they have no idea. I also must say that if you have only found one place where your phone will not work, you have not gone very far...
I have used Cingular for eight years now. I also have a Verizon phone for business. Ever since Cingular went to GSM about three years ago; I've had better luck with Verizon. It is probably the reason that their plans are more expensive.
What you people have to remember is that this can change. These companies bid on the cellular towers. The company that pays the most gets to be on top(higher)of the tower. The one that is highest of course has the best reception. Most of the time these contracts only last 1-3 years and then they have to bid again. This means that if a company gets enough complaints about an area, they will bid more the next time around.
That's enough "educating" for today...
P.S.
Bong&CrunchDude- If you want a camera with a flash, go out and buy one! Even a $3.00 disposable camera takes pictures that will blow away most digital cameras. Except for high-end profesional ones that cost around a grand. That is a whole different story that I don't have time for.
Thanks,
JD
JD- I think digital cameras are way more convienient- but after a megapixel or so, the lense makes more difference than anything else. if you want the convience of digital with good quality for cheap, go to e-bay and buy a canon D30. It's only 3MP, but it takes cannon prime lenses. A D30 with a 50mm prime gets you awesome photo quality, and you can get a whole kit (including a prime or two, a charger, battery, case, and a small flash card) on e-bay for less than $400. remember to calibrate the WB.
Me, I wish cellphone companies would make nice phones/pdas without cameras, and just charge $50 less or something. I don't care how many pixels they cram in there; the lense is never going to beat a $50 50mm cannon prime. (and I don't want to pay the huge cost to get that kind of quality down to cellphone lense size)
Luke - it's not so much the lens in these cell phone cameras, but the extremely small sensors. They're generally low quality (cost-priority) CMOS sensors with an incredibly tight pixel pitch. Additionally, no autofocus, which makes the most difference for these close-up macro shots.
Still nothing. It's OCTOBER. I don't understand why so many of you think it looks like a Blackberry. I've handled the Verizon Treo 700w for a few days and was amazed how significantly LIGHTER it was. The speed was amazing, of course. I am a Treo 650 user and I am absolutely LOVING it, even after ONE FULL YEAR of owning it. But so many people say WM5 is better somehow, so I think I'll make the switch.
Now where is the release date? I've only ever heard of sometime in October. Well, it's October...???
Well JD class begins now have been selling cell phones and in and out of the 2 most powerful cell companies in the U.S. 1st off there is absolutley no bidding on cell towers cause the only signal that any of them all use is or should i say was analog because the FCC has now said there will be no more analog also its impossible for cingular and t-mobile to share any services with sprint or verizon because well wait oh yeah thats right 2 are GSM and the other 2 are CDMA we could get into the differences of why this is impossible as well as thats why even if unlocked the phones will never work on another of the 2 networks or packet switching components and different signals used also the complete massive difference in data networks. but ill just leave it at that. and no matter what sprint or verizon releases cingular will always be ahead especially in the data game and of course coverage after verizon loses analog and cingular spending 6+ billion a year on towers everytime sprint or verizon go further in data ala evdo vcast they have missed steps like edge for cingular to fll back on all cingulars data services can be accessed in an data coverage where others are limited but when 4 g is released for them cingular with many more customers and still a larger more comprehensive data network will wait with its 58 million customers and much larger global base and launch the all over 4g network with video confrencing and live tv anyways for all the people wondering if its a w or a p version talks of a 750wp are in the works to have a version that could do both loading at over 700 a sec on the UMTS system where verizons 700 may load 1mb at 300 at best try this link on your palm to find out your speed http://text.dslreports.com
cellman OUT
release date is nov 9
Apparently it wasn't Nov 9th. Any ideas when this phone is coming?
At Cingular store in Madison, WI, I was told a release date of Nov 19 (in the warehouse) and it should be in the store (at least that particular one) about a week later. The 750 is Win, the 680 is Palm, I was told.
I was at a Cingular store today. They said that they find out about a release about a week before. They still have not heard anything, but expect it will be at least mid December.
That is NOT true at all. The blackjack press release came out last MON and the phone was release Thursday of the same week. It will be here before Dec....I HOPE!
For what it is worth, and remember I was talking with someone that may not know any more than we do, a Cingular sales rep told me that the 650 had an issue that carried over into the 750. This is causing delays to the release. He even stated that Cingular might not release it at all. I doubt this statement since it is on their rebate sheet. I finally gave up and decided to try using two hands again with the Cingular 8525.
Well the Treo 680 is avaliable NOW at Cingular stores around metro Washington DC. The sales dude thinks the 750 will be out next week.
Treo 680 will be officially available as of Black Friday (friday after Thanksgiving).
Market Watch report just came out (~5 hrs ago) and stated that the Treo750 won't be out until Jan or Feb of 2007. Bummer....so much for that 2006 business write off!
Go back and read that market report again. It said that the Treo 750 will be released the early part of Palms 3rd fiscal quarter. Palms 3rd quarter starts december 1st. So it looks like January might be mid quarter...so it looks like December should be the release. If you re-read the report you will see they intended to release it during the 2nd quarter, but were unsuccessful. So I still say anytime soon.
Chief Executive Ed Colligan said Palm expects to begin shipping the Treo 750 in the U.S. early in its third quarter, which ends in February.
Which means that it starts on December 1st.
After the Treo 680 unceremoniously made its appearance (finally) November 24 for $199, you'd expect the Treo 750 to come soon as well. Not quite, as Palm CEO Ed Colligan pointed out yesterday.
Even though Cingular's eventually going to get the Treo 750, which has been out in Europe for a while, stability problems have pushed the release back into the 3rd quarter of fiscal year '07. This means sometime between March 1 to May 30, for those not familiar with the fiscal calendar (Palm's is off by a month). – Jason Chen
Update: Palm's Q3 is December '06 to Feb '07, which means it's probably coming sooner than we think.
Now socaljohnny, isn't that what I said right before you?
I was told today, in Orlando, that the Cingulat store was expecting a shipment either Friday or Monday on the 750.
I am due an upgrade on my cingular acocunt, and my battery is near dead. I like the Palm 680, guess I will wait to see how much the 750 is. Anybody know?
I am hoping it will be out by Christmas???
Hey all...It is very true. The Treo 750w will be out for Cingular. A very good friend of mine over at Cingular has given me a tentative release date on this awesome phone. I have played with the test phone here in Chicago. Tentatively the phone is supposed to be out right before Christmas or right after New Years. The phone is going to be expensive. No contract price right out of store is $649.99 and with a 2 year agreement $499.99.
3G UMTS/HSPDA, Windows Mobile 5.0, Touch Screen, Stylus, SD Card Slot, Activesync, & no word on WIFI yet. The test phone I played with in the store was a black/gray color and did not have WIFI. It is a sweet phone. My unlocked HTC s620 is going up on EBAY!
I am hoping it will be out before Saturday
I went into a Cingular store today and asked if they had the Treo 750. They said no, not until next month. Then I looked at their display and saw a dummy Treo 750. And I said "here is one" and the salesperson said, "no that's a 680" and I corrected her by explaining that the 680 didn't have windows mobile. She then pulled it out of my hand and told me that it should not be on display and locked it in a drawer. Don't know what all of the means... By the way, the thing looks and feels beautiful.
