Engadget Podcast 084 - 08.15.2006
We're back! Again! Yes, we're quite sorry for the delayed program (listen in to find out a bit why), but there's no dearth of news to discuss. Fresh from Apple's big WWDC 2006 kickoff event we've got the long predicted and somewhat jejune Mac Pro, the Cinema Display bumps, and some interesting tidbits on Leopard, including Time Machine -- which Ryan sorely needed this week. Sony also pulled a fast one on us with the mylo, an intriguing and beguiling new WiFi handheld that seems to compete more with the PSP than anything else. Also hot off the presses is Engadget Mobile's scoop on the BlackBerry Pearl, RIM's new mobile consumer foray, and their first with a camera, removable media, and media playback capabilities. Thanks for welcoming us back, and enjoy!Get the podcast

actually not a wifi hashbar but " the getaway" at the nieuwezijdsevoorburgwal (that's really what the street is called!, crazy dutchies)
Wouldn't have made much sense to take these guys to a coffeeshop as they didn't even realize it was a piece of gear i handed over when attempting to bribe my way to raffle victory. (and i aint talking electronic gear here). Still, good hanging out with you people!
shon @ Aug 15th 2006 7:45PM
hahahah sweet!
Peter Rojas @ Aug 15th 2006 9:27PM
It's true, in real life I'm really square.
Besides, I went to Amsterdam to hang out with geeks, not hippies.

The thing you forget about the MILO is that, despite its lack of cellular, you can always subscribe to SkypeIn + SkypeOut assuming that functionality is supported (it should be).
iamdigitalman @ Aug 16th 2006 2:27AM
once again, I must complain about the ads. please remove them. I have having ads everywhere, even in the dang urinal!! hell, I use adblock plus religiously, and, if I could afford it, I would own a DVR just to skip over the ads. I really hope you listen to people like me, or else you wont have an audience soon.
jimmy B @ Aug 16th 2006 6:20AM
good to have you guys back, the quality is good man... might try out gizmo
Ricky C. @ Aug 16th 2006 6:55AM
iamdigitalman:
I think a minute worth of ads in a 60 min podcast is more than reasonable. If the ad at the start bugs you that much, there's always the fast forward button....
Peter Rojas @ Aug 16th 2006 9:53AM
iamdigitalman:
Ricky C. already pointed out that it's super easy to fast-forward over the ad, but you should also keep in mind that Engadget isn't a public service. The reason we're able to offer you both the site and the podcast for free is because we have advertisers supporting us.
OutofFocuz @ Aug 16th 2006 10:33AM
You tell 'em Peter. The ads are not obtrusive.
I just wanted to say I think the podcast should be a higher priority for Engadget because...well because it's really good. Have you listened to the other guys lately? It has potential. A podcast sporadically or every month or six weeks is not cuttin' it...Engadget should commit resources to make it happen...always. It will come back to you.
nick @ Aug 16th 2006 3:00PM
Well first thanks for answering my email, just wanted to pop in and mention, that I went with a used Treo600 only since all the upcoming devices still won't have wifi. I'll use this till we get a wifi enabled cell phone.
iamdigitalman @ Aug 16th 2006 5:02PM
well, I really think they are obtrusive. I really think you guys would benefit from becoming a public service. in my last ad rant, I even offered some tips/suggestions on how to generate revenue that isn't evil (sorry, but having ads spit in my face everywhere I go is very evil). at the very least, get some RELIVANT ads for your target audience who are into gadgets, not motor oil. I am really surprised that all the banner ads on this site don't bring in enough cash to support both the hosting AND the podcast. hell, being owned by AOL (which you always reinforce at every possible chance), you should get enough money from them.
once again, this is just an analytical opinion, so don't take it personally.
Peter Rojas @ Aug 17th 2006 9:40AM
I'm not going to argue with you, but simply put, Engadget is a business, and not a public service, and we support ourselves through advertising. It's not just about making enough money to be self-sufficient, our continuing profitability has enabled us to hire more people full-time and take on more freelance contributors and columnists, something which (hopefully) makes the site better and better. If we had stopped the first time we broke even Engadget would still be a single person blog.
I suggest you find another podcast that's more to your liking. Thanks!
