Leopard running free across the internet?
Although those of you who enjoy remaining law-abiding citizens probably won't be all that interested in this particular development, the anxious and morally nebulous of the Mac community will be happy to learn that Apple's brand-spankin' new version of OS X has already found its way onto the internets -- well, a beta version, at least, presumably the one they handed out at WWDC 06 (no, we didn't get a copy). Not surprisingly, early "testers" reportedly claim that the software feels "incomplete." This is obviously not the first time an Apple operating system has leaked out before its intended release (tsk, tsk to those unscrupulous developers responsible): both the Tiger and x86 versions of OS X were being torrented around well ahead of their appearance on store shelves. Now we're not willing to risk the wrath of his Steveness in order to verify the truth behind this supposed leak -- that's what you readers are for. So if you happen to be a friend of a friend of someone who's successfully installed the unreleased OS on his/her machine (or have any other, um, [Via Download Squad]

Anybody get this to run on a G3 machine yet, just for the heck of it? If not, I may try to get it to run if I can snag a copy somewhere.
If you are still running a G3 machine, you are looooooong overdue for a hardware refresh. Sell that thing to the museum and ante up for a new rig.
So you know, my G3 was free, the 512MB memory upgrade was free, I am about to upgrade it to a 40GB hard drive for free, and it runs Tiger just fine. I am a poor collage student without a job and so money is tight. I do want an iMac Core Duo, but until then, this G3 will have to suffice.
For all others who are curious about Leopard on a G3, i found out it can be done, but it is very unstable (Safari nor iChat opens w/o crashing) and you have to hack some install files before you can run the installer or burn the install DVD.
I just got a copy and now I'm contemplating whether to install it. I don't have the option of installing it on an external firewire drive so it would have to replace my current os. I'm leaning towards waiting for the real deal as much as it makes my heart ache.
Jayskie: "Of course it's only illegal if you get caught"
What kind of logic is that? The quote has nothing to do pirated software being illegal only when a person is caught. It's illegal as soon as you put it out there. In fact, according to the InfoWorld quote, it's a breach of contract whether or not anybody even downloads it, by the way.
Why do people insist that digital theft is not theft? Stealing is stealing. End of conversation.
Hmm...Time Machine *requires* a second drive? Wonder if they'll release either a) new iMacs with 2 drives standard, or b) start selling and/or bundling their own external drives.
It's hard to imagine Apple selling new machines with a new OS, without the ability to use one of the "big" new features out-of-the-box.
i am sick and tired of whiny anti-pirating readers wasting valuable comments on their personal beliefs. as i scroll through comments about the beta release, i see a dozen of them which consist solely of people with morals preaching about the legal ramifications of pirating software. as another user said, it's not a case of people wanting a developer version 8 months prior to release so they can avoid paying for the software - it's simply those of us who are hardcore mac fans with a desire to scope out the new features of leopard. so please, be realistic. those of us reading this post and its comments are highly unlikely to listen to your ethical ravings anyway, so why waste your time or ours?

It's all you need for a nice, 700KB/s download.

how do you download it?
Look this is nothing apple didnt expect. Dont think for two seconds Apple didnt expect just this to happen. The only people who are going to possibly get sued are whoever originally ripped the beta and put it online, and maybe any big web group who put up a direct link to it (which engadget has not done).
as for those of you who have installed it on a notebook (ibook/powerbook/macbook), did you notice any difference in the battery life? did you notice any 3-rd party tiger apps break? can you run the ichat .app in tiger? and most importantly for me, has anybody got this working in VMWare? (if so, torrent/ftp please :-P)
gimme the regular x86 version of panther or shut the hell up. i love the mac os, but im an AMD fan to the death!
or just give me a mac pro with quad FX62s and 32GB of DDR2 800, and maybe an X1900XT liquid cooled with 1GB of graphics DDR3, and get OSes specifically meant for emu'ing x360 and ps3 and put them in boot camp. that i like :)
...and a black mighty mouse and matching optimus KB wouldnt hurt.
Leopard_preview_singleDVDR.iso.zip 2.89GB works fine exept Safari quits and throws a hissy fit. I ran an upgrade from 10.4.7 instead of clean install. Appart from that, all good, just an upgrade really so far, the new screen saver is cool and new widgets. Mail has nice look and feel to it. Dreamweaver no longer works, so although the anticipation was far greater and the exitement in trying out the new OS, i will go back to 10.4 as its still more stable. What ya expect from a Beta. Still, Microsoft will no doubt be looking into it for more ideas.
Haha I'm downloading it using BitTorrent right now!!!
Does any know where to find fast downloadable pirate softeare?
