Sure, graphics and games may be all that are important to you when it comes to next-generation videogame consoles, but your spouse / significant other is probably even more concerned with how the device(s) will fit in to your home decor. Luckily for him / her, Games Radar got its hands on an exact wooden replica of the upcoming
PS3 (straight from Sony, so you know it's the real deal), and did a little comparative photo shoot with the
Xbox 360 so all of us have some idea of what to expect. As you can see, Sony's machine is living a lot larger than Microsoft's offering, but with its all-black exterior, the PS3 might actually be less obtrusive sitting among the rest of the gear in your rack. As appreciative as we are to Games Radar for providing some perspective on the aesthetic merits / detriments of both systems, we still think they could have taken a page out of DocCRP's book, and photographed the mockup next to every
single object ever produced in the history of mankind. Oh well, maybe Doc just set the bar a little too high; keep reading for another angle, and then head over to GR for the rest of the *shudder* "pr0n"...

If you've had any experience with slot-loaders (especially Sony's) like I have, you'd think otherwise. I can't tell you how many times I would have people have to replace their entire home theater-in-a-box system because their Sony "dream" system's slot loader swallowed up disks and refused to give them up.
One piece of advice: if you get the PS3 from a big-box retailer like Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. buy the Service Plan/Extended Warranty. Even if you could guarantee there would be no overheating/processor/other type of hardware problem that most 1st gen electronics have, JUST for the slot-loading drive, you NEED piece of mind past the 30-day return period/one year warranty. I speak from experience that Sony just doesn't have a good track record in that area.
Anybody else notice that the camera perspective (angle) in both of the pictures tends to add to the appearance in difference in size?
I'm a 360 guy, but if this shot is taken straight on it might not appear to be so dramatic. Just my $.02.
Purely aesthetically, i think the PS# is FAR better looking than the 360.... that curvey plastic-y look is really cheap. the PS3 looks sophisticated.
Doesn't really matter in the end, i guess, i'm just getting the Wii.
...but if i had to get one of the two, based solely on looks, there's absolutely no comparison: the PS3 is way less cheap and childish. (and i appreciate the internal power brick, and in person, MS industrial design is always kinda uglier than you expect.)
I’M HEARING A NASTY RUMOR that blue-ray and HDMI copy protection will prevent you from connecting HDMI to a receiver then to the TV like some HD cable boxes do now. Anyone hear this? So what’s a guy to do if he has more than one HDMI component? (i.e. Cable-HD, Satellite-HD, Up-converting DVD-HD and soon PS3 or HD-DVD). Receivers must be allowed to be used as multi in, single out HDMI switch boxes!
-----------------
OH, AND JUST IN CASE YOU NEED ANOTHER PS3 REMINDER. IF YOU MISS THIS HOLIDAY CYCLE YOU ARE, TO QUOTE A FAMOUS FRENCH POET, FUX’ED!
Ok, let's get this straight: the PS3 will NOT have an internal power supply.
"Ok, let's get this straight: the PS3 will NOT have an internal power supply."
I would hope not.....Overheating death because you had your PS3 on all day isn't the best news for all the people who shelled $600+ dollars out for it.
Yes peopel will have there PS3 on all day...and yes Sony better repare them for free...as Nintendo is doing with the DS lite and Microsft did with the 360....They CANNOT repeat what they did with the Ps2....
You MS people are completely ignorant/retarded/shallow/gay?/mentally-challenged. You spent $400 on an Xbox 360 the day it came out talking about how you only cared about games. Now all you idiots are talking about how HD-DVD will take over the world and your willing to fork over another $200 for the EXTERNAL HD-DVD drive. Let's see, $400+$200=600...follow that? Now look at the PS3, $600 gets you all that shit built-in plus WiFi, HDMI, more power, Japanese developers, and no Bill Gates. Idiots I tell you, idiots.
Yours Truly,

P.S. Not a fanboy either, its called common sense.
haha, and it will be thrown off of the trucks onto rollers just like every other console to come out. The 360 made a nice thump in its boxes of 2, so if they package the ps3 like they did the ps2, in packs of 4, then it'll make a really nice sound as it's thrown 6 feet to the rollers:)
And I'd agree with what champwarlord says, even if my opinion is biased because I work for Best Buy:
"One piece of advice: if you get the PS3 from a big-box retailer like Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. buy the Service Plan/Extended Warranty. @ jawanna know
The 360 is more ergonomic specifically for the fact that they did seperate The Brick, it can be hidden away behind your Entertainment Center. And for the HD drive, it's not essential for the 360 to be a game console. For PS3 it is. Therefore, that doesn't need to be factored in either. I personally won't be getting into the HD-DVD thing, cause I think there will be a newer, better solution in a couple years. Either electronic distribution or holographic discs or any number of other things.
@fanboys
You are all the same people that were laughing at the Xbox. You also were saying that the ps3 was going to be smaller. So that makes the picture very funny to me. I personally think size is irrelevant, but I think the lack of a flat top surface is a poor design choice. Plus, heat is definitely going to be an issue with a built-in power supply. I am curious if that is an issue, considering they should be in production soon, if not already.
I am also curtious about how important the form factor is in Japan. I wish there was a comparison with that wooden PS3 and the old Xbox.
omgz pS3 is teh hueg!!!1eleven!
/obligatory.
To Wanax:
Alright you got me on those points.
That's true that my opinions are just as invalid as any others - especially on aesthetics. And okay, if you can get different casings on the 360 then fine. Of course, that kills all 10 million points in the comment section blowing up PS3 because of its apparently ugly encasement. Btw, you quoted the guy I was quoting. I was originally posting to agree with his comment. Not making legit points there. But uh, okay that wooden post sounded more real than sarcastic - would've hit one of the other guys if not. But sure fine sarcasm it is.

D@mn right at $300-$600 (price range of 360/PS3) I won't be bringing it to anyone else's house. They can get their own or come to me. That's an arguement for any system.
- Which is why size isn't a matter. That's all I'm saying.

Well, they are fighting the 'internal power supply' thing right here in the comments. Does anyone know that as a fact?
and lawl at barry =)
mmmmm, let me start off by calling all those with a different opinion to mine ignorant/retarded/shallow/gay/mentally-challenged.
Not very mature, not very clever, just very fanboy.
@ HelpLine
I haven't seen anyone state that HD-DVD will take over the world. I still think the biggest mistake Sony will make with PS3 is including BluRay. Because that is the single largest reason for the PS3's outrageous price tag. I want a PS3, but I will wait til BluRay tech is dead or commonplace enough that I can pick one up for $300. But by then, the 360 will be $199 or less and I wouldn't be able to justify the purchase then either. For people who want a game system and care less about an HD movie player, the Wii and 360 are the way to go. and it will save you $200-$300.
Hahaha you all have a sense of humour!
If you think the PS3 is going to be expensive then maybe you shouldn't be buying one... and like the guy above said 400+200=600!
Games expensive - fair enough, but I am willing to pay if I have the best range of games, best quality and best technology.
Microsoft... enough said.
Having said that I'm not too keen on the look of the PS3, think the Xbox is a little 'cooler' but hey, I'm not about to dry hump it... I wanna play the games.
…And speaking of Sony fanboys… Where’s pixelator? I’m shocked that his NOT in this blog, throwing a fit…
For all the idiots who think the PS3 will be made of wood are illiterate! It says in the article that it is a exact wooden REPLICA (meaning a mock-up) to show actual dimensions. And for the people b1tching about the size, do you live in a trailer and not have any room at all?
My predictions:
1.Xbox 360 (good price, decent games. HALO OVER RATED!!!)
2.PS3 (only because of high price)
3.Wii (the stupid controllers get more press than the console)

oddly enough Sony seems to think otherwise... but what does that mean? i mean... i would definitely trust anonymous comment poster "Jared" over "Izumi Kawanishi", head of Sony Computer Entertainment's Software Platform Development division. i mean... who does this "Izumi" think he is anyway?!
i even remember the Sony-standard arrogant answer he gave to this day...
- - -
"Finally, one bit of controversy cleared up. IT Media closed up the interview by asking Kawanishi if the PS3 has its power source built into the system, like the old PS2 model, or if its separate from the system, like the slim PS2 and the Xbox 360. ''It's of course internal," responded Kawanishi. ''It's better that way. We of course do things the good way.''"

"good way" ... right. external power supply craps out and you mail the old one back and get a new one. internal power supply craps out... and you're sending in the entire machine. the other problem with internal? ridiculous vent holes EVERYWHERE on the PS3. as in :
http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3&message.id=358886&view=by_date_ascending&page=1
that link is also great for seeing the awesome reverse feature-creep.
it IS pretty big.. I'd have to MAKE ROOM FOR IT (maybe even put it on the floor)...
Me? Wii
the ps3 looks fine although i do perfer the dev look. maybe later once all three systems come out someone crafty will make a case to combind all three. how about a univeral remote for all three.
CrAzZyLeE here just keeping it real.
I stand corrected.
Although, I do wish it was the other way around for Sony's sake.
I remember when news of the good old Xbox came about... Then I got one and whack! It felt like I had been whiplashed by all the Sony fanboys at my school back in the day. Their pathetic excuses as to why the PS2 was better go like this:
1. The major thing they pulled the Xbox to pieces for was it's size.. Uh oh.. Looks like the tables have turned. Just look at the size of that thing!
2. They complained that it had a slightly rounded top meaning it would need to sit atop any of your current devices, Oh... Wait a minute!!! The tables have turned again. Nothing is sittin on top of that brute.
3. Another complaint was its looks. Hahaha! now you
can't seriously tell me that the PS3 looks cool? Can you? Go on take one more look and decide. It looks very very uncool, in fact I think they have gone back into the past with the damn thing.
4. You Sony fanboy's laughed when some of the first box's scratched up discs. Sorry but I have had experience with the slot-loading disc drives and it hasnt been pleasant, every one I have ever used does not offer a tiny pin hole where you can stick in a paper clip if the disc becomes stuck.. Oh and trust me, slot loading drives stick quite a bit leaving
you with a piece of rubbish trying to classify itself as hardware.
5. Weight was a major issue too. Although I don't
actually know its weight I can take one good guess that it is a lot heavier than the 360. We'll see.
At the end of the day, I do believe sony will win this console war down to the sheer number of petty idiotic PS3 fanboys who wont give another system a chance.
Don't cry to me when what you do buy isnt what you
expected.
Looks like a whale sitting on top of the 360..
Anthony F.,
Wii will not be first in America. I'm guessing Wii may very well be in last place, possibly second, but certainly not first. 360 will sell the most, without a doubt - not just in America, but overall worldwide (probably not in Japan, though). Microsoft has had a massive headstart on the other two, and there's no way the others will catch up. As far as second and third place is concerned, this is a toss up between the PS3 and Nintendo's little Wii-wii.
The PS3, despite its GIGANTICALLY FREAKISHLY HUGE SIZE and enormous cost, may edge out the Wii simply due to its feature set and the popularity Sony has had with the PS2. Then again, the Wii will offer a very cheap price which may appeal to many people looking for some cheap gaming thrills. It's hard to say.
The whole "Xbox is too big in the eyes of the Japanese" argument that so many people have offered up, is bogus, IMO, and now out the window. Japan is just simply Sony-crazed and will most likely go with this FAT-WHALE-SIZE PS3 over the sleeker 360, simply because of the Sony name. Who knows, maybe this will be proved wrong.
And if somebody doesn't like the color of the 360, quit whining, go to Decalgirl.com and buy yourself a body decal to cover the whole thing in something unique. And to those who also whine about the power brick, knock it off - it sits on the floor and no one sees it, so who cares?
But Microsoft's giant headstart, along with the power, online experience, software interface, game and accessory selection, and overall media and extender flexibility will ensure that it will be number one in the world, bypassing sales of both the PS3 and the Wii. By the time the other boys catch up, MS will be finishing up designs on their third generation Xbox, or at the very least, well into working on it. I'm sure they've long since started mapping out what it will be.
Microsoft has figured, that the first company to sell 10,000,000 units in this round, controls the market. For obvious reasons, they're much closer to that goal than Sony or Nintendo.
Oh, and yes, I AM a fan of the 360. But that doesn't mean I tell tales.
Have a nice day!
being a student of m.ba this page given me enough information when i want to write a thesis about positioning for competative advanatage.
i will soon write an apprecation leeter to sony for remarkable innovation some inside into there strategy .
good luck for sony
im not gonna get an HD-DVD or blu ray anyway. who really cares?? so what if it looks a little clearer
and not gonna spend money to make something look clear. ill wait until they stop sellin DVDs
