Steorn: inventors of infinite energy, destroyers of laws of thermodynamics?

We're sure most of you are well aware of the first law of thermodynamics, which states that energy cannot be created or destroyed, and the second law, which states that putting energy into a system will always result in a loss in potential output -- these are the reasons why everybody buys gas, why we pay for electricity, and in many ways why the world economy is shaped the way it is. Which is why whenever someone comes along and says they've developed a technology that undermines hundreds of years of scientific study with the ability to create boundless amounts of free energy with no emissions, well, you have to imagine we'd cry snake oil -- but it would seem Steorn, claimers of such an absurdity, has already launched a PR campaign to circumvent naysayers such as ourselves. In fact, the Irish tech company issued an ad in The Economist announcing a challenge to 12 of the worlds' finest scientists -- to be chosen by them (hey, is Hwang Woo-suk available?) -- to step forward and disprove their infinite clean energy technology. And once their technology isn't disproved -- and they obviously believe that it won't be disproved -- they'll begin licensing it to the world's energy companies (and charitably freely licensing it for rural water purification and electricity generation). If it's the real deal then after all the congratulations are all over and we've reevaluated the fundamental underpinnings of physics as we know it, perhaps all humanity's energy ailments are finally going to come to a close. But the chances it could be a large PR hoax toying with our desperate need to revamp our global energy situation? No one ever said that a human flying through space was an impossibility, merely a challenging activity. Creating energy from nothing however is considered too laughably far-fetched for even a 1950 B movie. Bear in mind that these movies are places where teleporting machines and super-light-speed craft have free reign.
I have a magnet stuck to the fridge. No glue. It just stays there. It hasn't moved. What is the power source? It seems "infinite."
What "is" the magnetic field? Particles? Waves? Nobody seems to be able to explain it.
If you set a piece of iron tied to a string close to a magnet without it touching, the magnet will hold the piece of iron suspended in air. This is work that seems to be performed indefinitely. Again - What is the power source? When will it wear out?

No, it isn't. You need to understand the concept of "work" better, as it is NOT what is being done here.

The only "work" performed here is in the initial raising of the magnet into position by your hand. Electromagnetism is a complex phenomenon, and is certainly useful, but is not a source of "boundless energy".
Magnetic superconducting Carbomite, now that's the ticket.....
If there's a machanism that is truly producing free energy then hook it into the grid and start mass producing it....
But we all know how rare Carbomite is and how difficult it is to work with such a rare and elusive material..

Regarding the Nighthawk/Blackhawk thing, the DIT article here: http://www.dit.ie/DIT/industry/studententerprise/index.html refers to the team as Blackhawk in the body of the article and Nighthawk in the footer. I think it's DIT's error, but they do (partially) validate Steorn as a real "Technology Risk Management" company. I'm keeping my eye on these folks, as there's probably some scam or hoax here but I can see no motive yet - especially after splashing out 82k on an economist ad! I'm also open to the idea that there's a real device somewhere, but as to whether it works is another matter.

Are you seriously trying to tell me you rigged up a few magnets in your lab and made observations that current theory cannot explain? And just because you signed an NDA, doesn't mean you can't tell people which Uni you are at. No Uni name and signed "S", and you use language like it is from a letter to Viz magazine from Professor Kundt. Get off the internet!

I think they need to also bring in somebody like David Copperfield who’s better equipped to spot hocus pocus than your average physicist. If this were real, the oil barons would have hired Cheney to take these guys along on a hunting trip.
Imagine it will work on the same princiles as heat pump. Imagine that it will pump some kind of magnetic, spatial or whatever energy for our purposes. If the unknown energy exist and has some function (maybe in global frame) after 50 years of using it with smile, we should find out some problems which we will not be able to solve and it will be the end of our F. civilization. Okay guys I’ll give you a free energy machine that creates more energy than it creates. Take a heavy ball and balance it on the top of a slope, carefully balance it and then use a tiny rockem sockem robot to gently punch the ball. When the ball rolls down the slope it will be generating substantially more energy than you used with the rockem sockem robot. The experiment can be continued as long as you want.
Oh, pay no attention to the effort you use to catch the ball and lift it back to the top each time. That’s what these Steorn guys are doing. Get real, if the machine existed and they knew it existed and it was already patented or had a patent pending then they could share the invention with the world. If it is just a cr**k then they would be secretive.
I hope for my 4 year old daughters future it's all true and we can get clean power in the future with little or no cost.
Imagine free heating/cooling, water pumping, transportation.
On the down side... imagine what the military could do? Tanks with no refuelling problems... military machines with no range problems.

I'm a fan of this idea but you don't get a free lunch! Take a look at this site. The excess energy (if it exists) Steorn is getting is coming from somewhere (I guess the 12 will figure it out for a hoax or not). Maybe it's the Earth's rotating magnetic field joining in...? As for time travel, take a look at 'Quantum Electrodynamics' book by Richard Feynman page 167 'The Theory of Positrons'. [Quote Second Para]...negative energy states which may be pictured as...waves traveling away from the external potential backwards in time...'[End Quote] So time travel isn't such a big deal for a positron!
The laws of thermodynamics are impregnable. The idea that energy can be created from nothing is absurd and pure absolute hokum and hogwash, which is of course why I am not here writing this and you are not there reading this. Oh, wait...

The entire world is looking for a source of clean energy. I have discovered a certain paradox basing on which a machine called METOZ can be built which by harnessing the gravitation of our EARTH can produce clean energy.

/ this is a weight cycle = the centre of gravity of the water in the METOZ machine sinks ( downward movement ) /
4/ energy is produced / released to the outside = 44 600 kGm during the straightening cycle / 39 A5-pictures /.
/ this is a pressure cycle = the water mass centre of gravity inside the METOZ machine travels upwards (upward movement) /

The METOZ has an even-arm lever of a 1.72 m length. The centre of gravity of the lever lies beneath the lever suspension point. The METOZ is equipped with two cylinders of a 1.6 m diameter each. METOZ is able to realize the cycle deflection and the cycle straighening. Both cycles are in accordance with current physics laws. METOZ as machine can not work and hand over the energy because it would be inconsonant to the law of conservation of energy.
I propose to execute the following intelectual process:
we have found ourselves in the Europe of XVII century. We know the trigonometry in the scope of being occured for METOZ. We know what is the even-arm lever and moment of force too. Closed minded science can only confirm what is already known. True invention takes an open mind. The real trick is to understand why somthing is impossible before you can begin to try and make it possible. If they really found a way to harness magnetic energy from a configuration of permanent magnets, wouldn't that just really be a new form of atomic energy?
The laws of physics remain intact and we get free energy, hmmmmm.
The truth is there are a number of projects underway right now that are 10 to 50 years ahead of Steorn.

An economic revolution that brings peace to the world? Maybe.

My bet is that the announcement of a working perpetual motion machine will be delayed a lot longer than that!

The MD is now claiming that it is a long and difficult taks to determine whether they actually have a perpetual motion machine or not. Given that he's claiming a power output substantially more than 0.5W/cc, I would have thought this to be dead easy.
You just build one - say - a litre in volume. This should churn out half a killowatt indefinately, so all you do is sit and watch it doing so for - say - 24 hours. This sort of power output is well above what any battery of that volume could provide. Q.E.D.
Of course, you'd have to trust the jury with it, and allow them to check that it's working as you claim, but that - from what I understand - is simply a matter of removing the cover so that the whirling doohickeys can be seen.
So why is it taking months?
And to those of you who thinnk that magnets have an 'infinite power source' - you idiots. Did you not study basic physics at school? A magnet slowly loses its magnetic field over time. It is not infinite. Magnetism is also a static force; there is no energy involved. Magnetic fields may TRANSFER energy; such as when you push two like poles together and they repel each other. YOU input the force. If magnets could create energy then dynamos would work by themselves without us having to turn them!
I am truly amazed by the lack of basic scientific knowledge amongst you people. If you cannot grasp such simple ideas as this all by yourself then I pity you.

I love how everyone is so cynical. Especially the people who quote the "Laws of XXXX" as absolutes. If I go back into my high school science book there are a bunch of "FACTS" regarding science that have changed.
Laws relating to science are just ideas that so far haven't been proven wrong.
Why don't we all wait and see? Even now with Quantum Sciences we see many things changing that previously were thought to be fact.
Reading the comments here reminds me of a time when people were burned at the stake for suggesting that the Earth was not the center of the universe, and that there were many planets and "suns" out there.
As time goes on what we know changes, there are plenty of things science can't explain. It IS VERY GOOD to be Skeptical, but it's also bad to be closed minded. Why don't we wait and see a few more days before crucifying this company?
We already know from the Economist ad, that quite a few scientists signed up to "test the device", and several papers even found out the names of them. While the scientists refused to talk about what they thought so far, it was discovered that of those names that were known, they still continued to go to Steorn's offices, and still do up to now.
The AD in Economist was placed a year ago, so that means for an entire year high-profile (and not because Steron says so) scientist have been regularly continuing to return to Steorn's offices. I doubt a scientist would continue to investigate a free energy claim for over a year, if there wasn't at least something EXTREMELY INTERESTING GOING ON.
Maybe it is all fraud, who knows, but I do know this, if nobody is even willing to entertain the idea that one day we might find a way to have free energy, then we won't because nobody will be will to consider or play with such ideas.
Regardless of all the fraud that has taken place in this area lets all try to keep and open mind, I mean hopefully we'll get to see a demo tomorrow correct?
Let's not burn any witches at the stake, until we ARE REALLY REALLY certain they are witches ;-) Give them a few days, and if they don't explain themselves, then I'll be the first one with a torch in hand.
