i-mate sheds HTC for Pocket PC Q-killer?
With info and pic originating from Hungary, you know it's gotta be good. Someone over at HowardForums just spotted this new, unconfirmed i-mate model, the i-mate Jaq, at Hungarian site PDA Mania, and were kind enough to share. Notably, i-mate doesn't appear to be relying on HTC (who has that little Q-killer of their own brewin') for the design here, and while their in-house designers might take a little while to warm up, a bit of diversity in the market never killed anyone. Also of note is that this phone purportedly runs the full-fledged Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC Phone Edition, allowing pen input on its QVGA screen and the software advantages that OS provides. As for the rest of the specs, the phone is a quad-band GSM, GPRS and EDGE unit, with 64MB of RAM, 128MB of ROM and a miniSD slot for expansion. There is IrDA and Bluetooth 1.2, but no WiFi, and the 1.3 megapixel camera is a bit lackluster these days, but with that QWERTY action this just might turn out to be a decent contender from i-mate.

Please refrain from using the term 'killer' in your posts (this one and myriad supposed iPod killers). It's really idiotic to suggest that any device can or will command more market share than the top market share device unless it actually does so.
I actually think that to use the word Q "killer" in the post it should actually be a device that has a chance to be better. This looks aweful and doesn't have a chance of ever getting much marketshare in the U.S. Now everthing is a Q-killer or killer something. Why not write about the record player in the antique store as an IPod killer.
Looks like it got beaten with a certain kind of stick...
Would that be the ugly stick or the useless stick?
I really like that design. I've used a Q before, and at least compared to non-keyboarded WM Smartphones, it rocks.
BUT LOSE THE JOYSTICK. Dear god, I have pushed 'Action' instead of 'up/down/left/right' on those things so many times it makes me go nuts.
Now if the battery would go all week like my v710 and not like the half day I get on my Q with the extended battery I would consider it a killer but until I can hold it and use it, it's only a pretender.

Too bad the OS still blows chunks.
This actually is an HTC Excalibur, just a different key layout. If you call that in house design, then I redesigned my 360 with a faceplate. shame on en"GADGET" for not keeping up on new HTC devices.

Well I don't why in the hell my above post got truncated, but I was saying that the JAQ is in fact (rhyme unintentional) the "Mercury" smartphone designed by Inventec.

Man, a wet used wad of toilet paper would kill the Q.
The Q is the biggest pile of god damn shit ever made. Pick one up and try to use it, its awful.
This image is poorly photshopped IMHO. The gaps beside the start/end call buttons look like hell. If iMate made this photo I wouldn't buy a phone from them because they can't even use photoshop much less a more complicated software package. IF this is an actual photo then they need to go kick their production managers in the backside.
Its nice to see more designs that are comming from sources other than HTC, a little competition will be great for the consumers.
When are we going to see more UMTS Windows Mobile devices? GPRS/EDGE isn't good enough these days.
"this just might turn out to be a decent contender from i-mate."
You havin a laugh... that thing is fugly. You see devices such as the Q and the i320 which look more sexy than the excalibur.
The colour is awful, its big (even with the larger screen, they could of got it into a smaller form factor) the keys look awful, and the JAQ logo just looks cheap. Can HTC and i-mate please take some design tips from Nokia, SE, Moto and Samsung please.
While HTC make excellent form factors. The Breeze (block) and the Excalibur are just REALLY fugly. More designs like the Hermes and the Orange C600 are welcome.
This looks like a load of JAQ SHI...
NO PUSH EMAIL FUNCTIONALITY - NO LOOT FROM SIR SKELEOR!
LONG LIVE THE BERRY.
SO is it full WM5 or just a smartphone without touch screen functions?
IT still seems pretty darn THICK to be in the ballpark with the Q - not sure why HTC isn't working on THINNER units.
The price on the hungarian site means:
433 euros, and about 463 usds.
US prices are less by about 20%, because of the hungarian 20% VAT.
