PlayStation 3: T-minus 3 months, not started manufacturing
Pretty bold move, Hirai, to admit that you're less than three months out from the global launch of what could be one of the most expensive propositions Sony has ever undertaken -- and you haven't even started manufacturing. According to Kaz, who recently spoke with GameSpot, Sony "haven't started manufacturing yet. Some of [their] ops guys were actually just in China, and also in Japan just reviewing the [production] lines and everything else." Oh, great, you've got two million units to whip up and you're still in the review process. That's over 660,000 units a month if they start, um, tomorrow. Look, we're not saying it can't be done, but unless the hefty price tag of the Blu-ray behemoth outstrips consumer interest, it seems like we could be in for some serious shortages come the holiday buying season.[Via GamesIndustry.biz]

Of course the PS3 will sell out during launch, there are enough fan-boys for that. The spring will be the more interesting time for the PS3... After the dust settles from the launch shortage and all the fan-boys have their PS3, will the general public and casual fans buy the PS3?
How can there possibly be shortages if no-one is going to buy one?
Do you know anyone who is planning on buying one? I don't.
SHORTAGE, SHMORTAGE! I’m not worried about that since I have the inside track on getting one. But, wait for it,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,JUST IN CASE YOU NEED ANOTHER PS3 REMINDER. IF YOU MISS THIS HOLIDAY CYCLE YOU ARE, TO QUOTE A FAMOUS FRENCH POET, FUX’ED!
I never owned a PS2 (and currently own a Gamecube), but I still have no doubt whatsoever that the PS3 will sell like mad, and in a year's time will be the only "serious" console for hard-core gamers (the technology is just that strong). And for me, the Blu-Ray drive is more than enough reason to justify the price. So I'll be buying one, no question.
This is no big deal. If anyone knew anything about Manufacturing in China they would know that over 2 million units could be popped out in ONE MONTH.
Lets say that there would be 1 PS3 per 10 seconds coming off of the production line.
Lets also say that they only have 8 factories producing the PS3. That would be 2,073,600 at the end of 30 days.
Either Number can fluctuate the seconds it takes to produce 1 PS3 or the number of factories they use.
If the components were not completed (Cell processor, motherboard, RSX card, ect) Sony would be in much more trouble, but this final step is only assembly, so there is no need to worry.
