Ricoh launches Caplio R5 compact with 7x wide-angle zoom
Ricoh has released an update to its zoomerific Caplio R4 compact digital camera today, the not-too-surprisingly-named Caplio R5. Like the R4, it packs a massive 7.1x optical zoom equivalent to 28–200 mm and also ups the megapixels to a respectable 7.0. Otherwise, the main improvements to this model look to be a new vibration correction function and an all new image processing engine, which promises to increase the quality of images shot in low-light conditions and at high ISO levels (all the way up to ISO 1600) -- if true, that would correct some of main complaints with the R4. No word on price yet, unfortunately, but we wouldn't expect it to be too far off from the sub-$450 pricetag of the R4.

Why do camera makers torture me so?
- Panasonic has great features in its LX1/LX2 cameras, including RAW output
- Ricoh has an incredible zoom lens
- Fuji has an outstanding noise free high ISO sensor.
Why can't somebody make a pocketable camera that combines all of these features?

lol, you're not alone. until now i keep on postponing to buy a digital camera, a new and better one keep coming up every month.i thought buying a new car is complicated but digital camera is more and torturously painful. more painful is when you bought the one you've been drooling for and the one just came up a week later is much better that the one you just have. it's just like looking for a wife although this one is lot easy and fun but no return and no refund with or without defects.

one more here who feels the same.
Though a have been quite a fan of panasonic these last years, when comparing the Panasonic FX01 to the Ricoh R4 I prefer above all the zoom toggler of the Ricoh much to the Pana's. The Ricoh has it placed on the back side of the body pushing a longish button on the right or left, while the small Panas have a wheel-like toggler with a small notch portruding on the front of the body. Have you ever tried them? I find the Ricoh's MUCH better to control! - generally I like the controls of the Ricoh superior to the Pana.

and yes, I do know that now new models are out, but the controls, certainly the zoom toggler seem not to have changed.
