FairUse4WM strips Windows Media DRM!
So far as the yet very quiet forums are claiming, a new app called FairUse4WM can be used to strip Windows Media DRM 10 and 11 (i.e. PlaysForSure, but not WM DRM 9). Yes, yes, we know, we've heard this song and dance before. But before we proceed, let's just be totally clear on how the system works: providers like Napster and Yahoo Music Unlimited provide subscription service for unlimited access to Windows Media DRMed files; stop paying the fee, stop getting access to the files -- but you already knew all this. We tried FairUse4WM and we can verify that it quickly and easily stripped the DRM from our Napster To Go tracks, and made them freely available to play on our Mac (which, of course, has Flip4Mac installed). In other words, it's a simple, apparently lossless, one-step method for making your files playable after you're no longer paying fees on your subscription service. The app didn't work on our Vongo videos, but we can verify with all certainty that yes, Windows Media DRM can now be easily and quickly stripped from PlaysForSure media services. Now watch as Microsoft shuts down the forums and runs damage control in order to prevent an digital media entire platform from collapsing. Click on for a couple more pics of the app in action!
P.S. - Kinda goes without saying but we take absolutely zero accountability for what you may do with FairUse4WM, ok?
[Thanks, Frank]

Now here's that same track we just downloaded from Napster playing on Quicktime (with Flip4Mac, which, of course, doesn't support WM DRM.)

Oh, couldn't forget to put http://creativecommons.org/ up as well.
Solution that make sense.

So this means that music from napster and yahoo can be used on ipods, right?
And is it legal?
Lets face it, the mp3 genie has been out of the bottle for a long time and is a fact of the market. If the cost of the content suddenly became "reasonable", ($0.10/song?) piracy would largely disappear. Music companies have continued to try to make the millions that they did before the mp3 genie was let out and it just won't work any longer. With-out piracy, music companies would be charging huge prices for their products. As long as the music industry continues to gouge consumers, piracy will continue.
There is a virtual CD Burning software NoteBurner from http://www.noteburner.com which can convert protected WMA files by burning the playlist to the virtual device it installed.
I am glad to find this article and hope this can help with some DRM files I have and paid for, but no do not work and kinda upsets me since I did pay for them!
I bought tracks from Prince's former website while a member and of course he took down his website months ago, and now none of my tracks work.
I personally thinks that's completely unfair to us buyer's who actually paid the money for these files and now cannot hear them, but alas I shall try this out and see what happens.
Thanks Engadget, for a heads up.
So...where can I get my hands on 'FairUse4WM'
Not a music downloader personally but anything that helps reclaim software or hardware I purchase and raps the knuckles of the music industry that has gone way too far, I am all for.
It is too bad Vista wasn't boycotted. It would have sent a clear message to Willy Billy Gates that he buckled to the wrong side of his revenue. I for one will stick with XP and Linux...both of which serve my purpose quite well. Vista is more bells and whistles than it is worth anyway. I still can't believe you are limited to 1 computer per cd. 2 or 3 would have been reasonable in todays home market but then again..who said M$crosoft is reasonable.
Actually, I just want to disable the DRM because they dont allow me to use the songs I have in my videos that I'm Making. For Some Reason, my Brother's Music(on his pc) seems to work on mine.(I email myself with his music). Wierd, i dont have a clue why :\
It keeps coming up with "11.0.5741.6340 isn't supported yet.
IBX Version " what do I do?
I tried Melodycan converter on my protected video files and was impressed about its good performance: http://www.convert-any-media.com/
