Folks, whip out your credit cards, because if you haven't already
downloaded the Vista beta or a leaked copy from the internets, it looks like we may actually have
a product for you to buy. Amazon shows that Windows
Albatross um, Vista will be released on January 30, 2007, and they've been taking preorders for the last two weeks. Depending on which
package or upgrade you decide to get, Vista will cost you at least a cool $159 and up to $399 for the full "Ultimate DVD-ROM." Keep in mind that these preorder prices may be subject to change and may not reflect the actual final retail price, and may require the full written consent of Major League Baseball.

$400? That's half the price of a new computer. Funny, I wasn't aware that XP was broken or unstable or anything. I'm not sure what I'm getting for that price but I know MS hasn't done much to make me want it. I'm holding off for Singularity ;)
Mac @ Aug 29th 2006 1:00PM
Holy crap that's expensive. Okay I don't see Apple overpricing their OS like this and I certainly don't see any Linux/Unix base companies overpricing their top of the line OS like this either.
This makes me scared to think how much will the unlimited user licenes will cost.
HelpLine @ Aug 29th 2006 1:07PM
I don't know if Microsoft can become anymore unoriginal. Why can't they create their own market with a product instead of just copying everyone? Let's see...Zune is trying to copy the iPod, Windows copied Apple, the Xbox copied the PS2 and I just read some crap about them creating vacuum robots like Roomba. Microsoft sucks. You guys are idiots.

Wow "Help Line," Microsoft is unoriginal? Let's see, Bill gates gives billions to Aids research, has the most technologically advanced house in the world, loves cheese, and could bang your wife in the asian spices isle at the super market....I'd say that's pretty original. let's think before we write from now on ok...ok.

I would prefer ONE version for US release (other countries can have government ordered stripped down versions) at ONE price -- a reasonable price.
Actually, I would prefer real video drivers and World of Warcraft for Linux!

People that donate money aren't original. A bunch of ridiculous celebrities donate to good causes. Next your probably going to tell me how much you love Kevin Federline. Po-Po...Po-Po-Zow. That dude is pretty much a charity fund so Britney Spears can get tax breaks.
Lets try to keep the racial slurs to a minimum here. Talking about the asian spice aisle in that sort of manner would get you killed in Chinatown. It would never happen anyways because Bill Gates donated his dick to charity a while back. You're an idiot.

for all the MS haters, if you don't like it, stick it to MS and DON'T BUY IT.
Personally I think its a good thing, XP was/is a very good OS, but as time goes by there is always need for updates and upgrades. I don't see the pricing as unreasonably. Comparing it to Linux isn't really fair either...

Is the reason you wont compare VISTA to Linux because linux is in a league of its own?
VISTA is going to pretend that it is the first OS to have a 3D desktop. Mac was there long before and Linux had it not long after and it is completly free.
I look at programs that will run on "XP or better" so why wont they work on Linux. Its clearly the better OS. Not as user friendly but Ubuntu is getting there.

Adam @ Aug 29th 2006 2:36PM
How the hell do you people get so worked up and upset over an operating system? Good grief.
All that matters is that Vista will be shipped next year, and the prices aren't astronomical. I would rather pay $159 every few years than $100 every year, but that's just me. Ultimate is pretty expensive, but most people have absolutely no use for it, and won't buy it. Ultimate has some nice features, but only a few would really benefit from spending that much money.
Also keep in mind that most people don't buy their OS out of the box. They wait until they get a new computer, and get whatever OS comes with their new comp. So this won't affect most people at all.
AND remember that only suckers pay MSRP for this kind of stuff. You can find legit, and cheaper versions of XP all over the place.
Rikko @ Aug 29th 2006 2:36PM
For god's sakes, all four of you, look at what you've just written and wasted your own time on.
Just stop. Every OS out there is a vast and complex system that is beyond what any of us can do on our own. Just stow it and respect each of them for what they are.
Hurling braindead propaganda and ad hominem attacks on web forums just cheapens this site.

Dear Help Line,
Why do you still live here? I love you, you are my son, you are my blood. I want you to come visit often, I want you to come to dinner, go out on the weekends, and come to family events. You are a cancer though, your ignorance is a disease that is much like second hand smoke and my house is the hypothetical tiny bar...you are killing me slowly. If you were a gas you would be carbon monoxide, except it would be a cross chemical gas that would smell like the dog's ass (Carbon monoxide has no smell, unlike you). You are very useless to society, me, and anyone that comes into contact with you. Though you were spit from my womb, I wish the doctors hands would have had paint all over them, painted you brown, then I could have dropped you off in mexico and called it a day.

Why do I want it?
I know it's not translucent/opaque windows or the skins and themes. *cough*getwindowblinds*cough* I know it's definately not the amount of resources it's going to use especially since I use my computer for gaming and all the extra RAM, HD space, Video Memory, etc. I added was to game...so why do I want it?

Just finished the RC1 download here at work. It was a hair over 3 hrs (we have a slow pipe here shared amongst 80 people).
So far, it's not bad. The best thing I have for it to run on is an HP dx2000 P4 with 1gb of RAM and 40gb hdd. As a long time Mac user at home (Windows at work), the interface looks familiar, but there are some differences.
I had the Beta 2, but never had the time (or hardware) to install it.
Looking to see what it can do and how well it can work, stacked up against XP.

This software is being rushed I would wait atleast a year till they release some patches for it, before even thinking about spending such rediculous amounts of money to replace an OS that already does everything I need...
Neebs @ Aug 29th 2006 6:18PM
What exactly are the upgrade discs?
Alex @ Aug 29th 2006 6:31PM
I'm not too familiar with this subject, but here's what I think:
You need to pay around $130 about every 18 months to get "minor upgraded new features" (actually, many people think those are very important features) for OSX.
So, Vista would worth the price if it is not just a mere "WinXP SP3" with some minor new features (much like an OSX upgrade) and a new layout that you can get for WinXP (or even Win2k) with the help of 3rd party software (to my knowledge, some are free).
P.S. Please excuse my ignorance, but can someone let me know where to find out what makes that MLB line funny?
keith waddington @ Aug 29th 2006 9:44PM
This has been a very idiotic thread. Aren't we supposed to be talking about an OS release?
A few people have mentioned that the cost is good value/bad value compared to OS X. Here are my thoughts:
Mac 10.1 was the first release that Apple intended to be the primary OS on new machines. So if I bought a mac then, the next 3 upgrades--if I CHOSE to get each one--would still have cost me less than getting the Vista Ultimate or whatever it's called. And don't forget there is only one version of OS X so it's equal to the Ultimate not some stripped down home/bungalow version.
Now the difference is I have been enjoying all the new feature of each OS X version for the last three years, while Windows users have been waiting, twiddling thumbs. and making use of virus protection and pop-up blockers etc etc etc and hunting for new drivers etc etc..
In the end we have both spent the same amount of money. But I've had three years of great usage while the windows user has just been waiting and waiting and waiting.
The again I could have stuck with 10.1 and jumped to 10.4. Result: saved money but missed out on new features of the in-between versions.
In other words as a mac user I had the CHOICE to save money or enjoy new versions. The Window user had no choice and the financial outlay, in the end, will be equal.
Cheers

Sorry Microsoft. But the only reason I would use this product is because it fixes some of the security issues in XP.
And I am not going to reward you with my money for simply fixing your shoddy product. The other features, are pretty sad and are easily available for free. Widgets, new skin, etc. No, security is all Vista has for your more educated customers.
I will sleep well at night getting my copy for free, even though I have plenty of money to pay this. Maybe the next version 7 years from now will be worth it.
keith waddington @ Aug 29th 2006 10:45PM
Mr bwhaler
theft is a crime and this rationalisation doesn't make it right. If Microsoft had a monopoly on OSs, then maybe you would be justified. They don't. If you think they are so shabby move along and use a different OS.

Edward @ Aug 29th 2006 11:29PM
First of all as i say this i write it on my powerbook g4 laptop.
but ya know, assuming that you upgrade every time Apple updates their OS i think you could expect to pay the same amount, just over a longer period of time. since MS only releases it once every 5-6 years (right? or am i stupid?) its like getting hit with the cost of multiple upgrades to Apple's OS once.

from my point of view i think Vista will need more time to penerate the market compared to Windows Xp, coz when XP was launched Windows 2000 was the only stable OS around, but now the market has changed, XP is still a capable OS and there are lots of linux flevor which are equally capable. I have'nt still seen a Vista machine but from what people say, i think there's lots of eye-candy and support for multimedia and games, but at the moment multimedia and Gaming is moving away from the general purpose PC and into devices such as XBox and Play-Station, thus these new features which are available in Vista is not used. furthermore in a corporate enviorenment Vista have more competetion from Linux.
