HP's Pavilion dv9000t media laptop
HP's latest model of their media power laptop lineup, the dv9000 series, now has one more option for users to configure when they go to order theirs: Core 2 Duo. It's not as though we haven't seen enough of these Core 2 Duo machines already this week (and truth be told, we still don't see a C2D option on their site), but we assume the new dv9000t will be configurable with the same as their previous dv9000 release (the one that featured an AMD Turioun 64 X2) with a 17-inch 1680 x 1050 or 1440 x 900 widescreen display, dual SATA RAID drives, 256MB GeForce Go 7600 graphics, 5-in-1 media reader, 802.11a/b/g, Bluetooth, dual-layer DVD burner with LightScribe, ExpressCard/54, HDMI, and the like. Weights start at 7.8 pounds, thickness at 1.57-inches, and prices at $1,200.

Update: did we mention that the dv6000t with Core 2 Duo is out, too? Because it is, and Laptop mag even has a review of one. We think you know what to expect, yeah?

Where can I get a Password Recovery toolset for Vista? As mentioned earlier, all of my Vista enabled PC Materials/CDs' are either lost or in an unlocated moving box.

This may have come up before, but, is there a way to disable the scroll feature on the touch pad? I have the dv9000t, I know I have the option of turning off the touchpad and using a wireless mouse, but I prefer the touchpad for portability.
this is a waste of your money,
Aw darn, I just bought an 8000 3 months ago. To tell the truth, I like my 8000 better than this one, since the new one's glossy finish is too easy to fingerprint, it costs more for the same performance, and the mouse buttons on all the new HPs have sucked. It's a step in the right direction, but only a step.
Why the h8 for left-handers? :(
Very, very nice. I want one - good to see the PC industry making some attractive machines.
stupid HP I am still waiting for them to add that option for the dv5000t.
still waiting....
@HRM
seriously, i never understood whats up with the offset trackpads. I think it looks lame and could maybe effect leftys
@strike
It's not actually offset. Look how it lines up with the keyboard just like on any other laptop. Think of the Numpad as an extra bit rather than part of the keyboard and it makes sense.
@strike and hrm
The offset pad is set below the spacebar and is needed for all those who rest their wrists on the laptop while typing. I bought a laptop which has a similar keyboard but the pad is centered; it is a real pain in the arse unless you switch the pad off during typing, which is still a pain in the arse as it stops quick use.
I just got the dv5000t brand new at CompUSA for $599.99!
Love this lappy!
In response to "The offset pad is set below the spacebar and is needed for all those who rest their wrists on the laptop while typing." I must reply. Resting your wrist on the laptop is not an ergonomically correct method of typing as it increases stress on the fingers. Just so y'all would know. I do it occasionally too, but I try NOT to.
Good day,
The offset pad is beacuse this is an extended (mini) keyboard. The offset is proportional with the addition of the numkeypad.
In any other non-extended lap-keyboard you'll see the pad on the same place, below the spacebar, as Ebzy already stated, the only difference is that IT LOOKS offset here, because of the realstate taken by the extra keys. It has nothing to do with wrist rest, tho.
@ boolean22
I wasn't saying you should rest your wrists on it, I meant it is placed under the spacebar so that your wrist do not rest on it or repeatedly brush it
The glossy finish and not having a AMD Turion processor is what i like about this notebook. What i DON'T like is the inside details which is silver/grayish which looks a lot like my current VAIO.
In overall i prefer Hewlett-Packard over all the other manufacturers for various reasons. But still, I'm waiting for an all Glossy Black notebook with a Blu-Ray Disc and a DVI HDCP output for under $3,000.
they have a choice between 7600 go 256 and 512. Is twice memory that much better or the card sucks anyway?
@Ebzy
Actually, my asus's touchpad perfectly fits the touchpad (bigger than that one) nicely between my two hands.
On the HP, half my left hand would be on that touchpad -_-
I am thinking of purchasing this laptop or dell e1705. Any opinions? the dell has a better graphics card but hp has 512 memory. I hear people complain about dells quality. Which should i go with. I will max out either machine
I just purchased the dv9000t with almost max on all the customs. I hope it is going to be the machine they say it is. I game and due alot of heavy apps. It will not ship untill mid month but the wait will be worth it I hope. I will let every one know if it is as good as they say.
Purchased mine last week. Now I have to wait 3 weeks to get it in..arrgggggg!!!

I'd appreciate it if natedawg, Ltsfytfyr, and anyone else out there that gets the dv9000t let us know about the battery life. You can also use the BatteryEater Pro 2.0 tester to see what the stress limit would be and post your results in your reviews. Go to (http://www.xbitlabs.com/images/mobile/battery-eater/BEPro.zip) to download it.
The results would be interesting, since the two configurations differ 2 Drive RAID 0 vs. single HD
TIA
Thanks for the link TIA. I am very interested in seeing how the barttery life is also. My test will differ some from natedawg though, due to I orderd the extra 8 cell battery for mine. The nice feature of the dv9000t is you can play DVD's and music with out booting up windows, that will save on the battery life emincely.

Mine was supposed to be shipped 9/14/06, but it was shipped 9/13/06 @ 3:00 am....yeyyyyyyyy. I wish they could just email it to me...I am tired of waiting for it.
what is the first thing you are going to do with your new notebook, or install?
I will be connecting the notebook, using the HDMI output to my HDTV, and see how it looks. I have the hdmi to dvi cable. and then WINAMP!!! and then MS SQL Express and catch up with my school work,
Well it has arrived.
Sharp looking machine, fast in some ways, slow in others. I am wondering if it will be able to handle BF 2142. Over all clean looking but finish finger prints easy and built in Mics dont work as well as they claim.
Battery Life --- TIA --- Here was my test
Three Boot Ups
Instalation of a 1.3 gig program
Running the app. the whole time
Screen full brightness
Two sided print job the whole time
Attached to the laptop
1- Wireless mouse transmitter
1- Lighted USB cable going to mobile printer
1- 512 MB Flash Drive

This was a pretty extreme test, I will run others and post.
Have you ran any game tests?? I was interested in COD2, Doom 3, Half life 2 and any high graphics demanding games. If you would not mind to post on how good of a gaming machine this is, I would greatly appreciate it. I am very interested in ordering one.
Thanks,
Shane
Shane
I have played BF2 on it wireless and it will crash you to the desk top. I then played hooked directly to my modem and it worked fine. This was a 30 minute test though. Another thing to remember most games do not support wide screen resolutions, so do not be dissappointed if the graphics are not as good as playing on you desk top. But over all it is a fast machine.
Can you even connect to the internet via the bluetooth? What was the FPS with BF2? I wanted to check the FPS with Doom 3 if anyone had that. I want to make sure before I buy this Laptop and want one that can game hardcore, complete my homework and watch TV on. Thanks for the info.
Shane
Three Questions: How should someone choose between:
1. the ultrabrightview screen vs the higher resolution 1680X1050?
2. Can windows professional (xp) still do everything that windows (xp) media centre?
3. Is widescreen good for programs like Secondlife?
Robbie,
To answer your questions the best as I can.
1. I would go with ultra bright unless you work in a room full of florecent lights
The glare will frustrate you real fast.
2. I would go with XP Pro it will do more then Media Center. Media Center is for begginers and that is from the mouth of a tech from HP.
3. Sorry I can not help you on this one, I know nothing of second life? Again as I told Shane, gaming on a wide screen will reduce you graphics quality some what do to many games do not support the wide screen resolution.
Shane,
I do not know what the frame rate was in BF2 but it ran smooth as glass for 30 Minutes. Maybe I can run a test this weekend for you and get back to you. Blue Tooth as far as I know is not for internet connections but for hardware to hardware connections allowing you to be mobile and wireless. This computer has both wireless
conection for internet and blue tooth for hardware communications. Again most games do not support wide screen play and the graphics are not as good as on a square monitor.
Me I look for a HP too but I worry if my game "Single" will work on it. Do HP with GE Force have still a conflict problem? Like the screensaver "space" doesn't work? Do you try demanding game. My game need at less 1.5ghz, GE Force 3D, direct X8.0. When I try it on a dv5190 it doesn't work because of graphic conflicts than I'm scare to buy a new HP laptop and have the same problem.
Thanks.
Finally made some unboxing photos:

Enjoy!
Hi i currently have the dv9000z basically same one but amd version and only 1gig ram because i will upgrade when i get more money. But everytime i try to run BF2 or the trial version of BF 2142 the game always crashes. I heard from someone the its because of my widesreen. How do i get around this? like make it so it think its a square monitor and put the black bar things on the sides. because i love BF2 when i had my desktop but i cant use my desltop anymore and it keeps on crashing on my laptop.
Please reply.
Thanks
There is a nice feature on my HP dv1000 - the small button for turning off the touchpad. It is important because I like to use an external mouse instead of it.
Can anybody who owns dv9000t confirm that it also has this feature/button?
Yes Serge, the 9000t has a touchpad on/off button.
I have run BF2 and Half-Life 2 w/o any problems. HL2 tends to heat the GPU up quite a bit but nothing serious.
Anybody have any problems with their 9000t yet??? My hard drive just kicked the bucket yesterday. It was the 7200rpm 100gig. I talked to one of the geeks @ geek squad and he said that he has already had to send 3 back to HP with the same problem, I wish I would have gone with the dual hard drives now. I have also had a problem with the computer turinging on. Sometimes when I press the on button nothing happens, I have to take the battery out and plug the a/c in to get it to turn on, kinda weird. Also, the ethernet card has had some problems. Sometimes, not lately, it will not connect to the internet. I will have to restart the computer until it works.
Other than that I am very pleased with the 9000t, I think it is a great machine, minus the hard drive.
I bought an HP Pavilion dv9000t with Intel Core 2 Duo, 2MB RAM, 240 G HDD, etc. in October 2006. The computer abruptly powers off when playing games (e.g., Battlefield 2142, Company of Heros, Prey), and when using Adobe Photoshop CS2 for photo-editing. I tried HP's online Tech support, and they accessed my computer via the Internet. The technician was floundering, and even told me to pop the battery out while the computer was running. I then called the HP Tech support phone line, and talked to a guy from India. He was difficult to understand. I described my problem to him, and, after putting me on hold, he told me that I had a software problem and he could not help me. He suggested that I return the machine to the store where I bought it. I bought it from hpshopping.com, so I called them. They told me that they couldn't help me, and I should call HP Tech support. If I hadn't paid $4,000 for the unit and all the accessories, I would toss it in the trash. Any ideas on what the problem may be? I expect that it is overheating, and shuts down. It's supposed to be the best and greatest gaming and multi-media laptop, but it's not.
I've had overheating problems with HP 17" screen notebooks ever since the zd series. I complained and wrote a serious letter to HP and was put in touch with executive customer service. They sent me out a new system, but after a year of owning this machine, the dv8000, it occasionally turns off due to overheating, but not as frequently as the hideous Pentium 4 zd series model. I'm seriously interested in purchasing a thermometer with a few hundred degrees range, like a mercury thermometer, so I can check the temperature this machine runs at. My next system is definitely not going to be an HP, and I had bad luck with Dell Inspirons back in the day crunking out on me with video, keyboard, and memory--just a pitiful job of engineering. I might even just give up on stupid laptops and forget this whole desktop replacement idea and just actually get a desktop. They're much more reliable than notebooks.
Just orderd mine and here is my config

T. Fox, I have had the same problem with the computer shutting down while gaming. Mine has only shut down a couple of times: one while playing Half Life 2 and one while decoding a video. I also suspect that it is a heat issue.
I just got a DV9288ea with 2 x 160GB sata disks, with Vista Home Premium pre-installed. Anyone know if it's possible to get striped Raid setup on this? Does the controller support it, will I lose my Vista license etc.?
Hey This question was asked previously about the 1)17.0" WSXGA+ BrightView Widescreen (1680x1050)
2)17.0" WXGA+ Ultra BrightView Widescreen (1440x900)
if I will be gaming with this computer what would get me the most clear picture with the lowest amount of Distortion?
Does anyone else have problems with hot wrist rest area? Mine is so hot that it can be uncomfortable. I'm thinking of sending it back to the factory, under the assumption that there must be something wrong with the cooling system on my machine -- a dv9000t with all the options, more or less, including the fastest processor.
hi..
My dv9000t also turns off when playing games (Company of Hero's, Titan Quest), and when decoding video. I am thinking of returning the product back but what can they do? Can they fix it or is the way the system is designed?
Have you returned yours and gotten a replacement?
Other than that this notebook is great.
William
Dan, I would go, actually I went, with the Ultra Brightview Screen. This is an AWESOME screen, you will be 100% satisfied with it!
Daniyal, I do not have any problems with a "hot" wrist area, although, I only opted for the single 7200rpm hard drive. You probably got the dual hard drives and that is why it is getting a little hot.
Flyhye, I agree, the notebook is great, but i have run into the same problem as yourself. Mine will sometimes go out on Half Life 2, and video encoding. I think it is a heat issue with the processor. What i do is prop something underneath the notebook while gaming or encoding, this gives more space in between the fan and another surface. Also, running few programs while doing either probably helps. I do not know if they can fix this problem, I wouuld be inclined to say that they cant, but i do not know for sure. Something else I have thought about is purchasing the expansion base. This base allows the computer to rest at around a 45 degree angle, thus allowing much more space in between the fan and another surface.
Wicked Fast Computer though, I am very pleased with it!
I contacted HP support, the heat problem could be a power management issue. Sound weird, yes, but this fix seemed to solve my problem with my custom built dv9000t. I have the duo2 2.0Ghz and the 512mb video with 2GB of ram. 10 minutes into Unreal Tournament 2004 and it would just shut it down.
Here is the fix.
Reboot and reset your BIOS to defaults.
Then to reinstall the power management on the Notebook, please perform the steps below.
To uninstall and then reinstall Power Management in Windows XP by following these steps
1. Click Start, select Control Panel, and then choose Performance and Maintenance.
2. Click the System icon to open the System properties window.
3. Select the Hardware tab and click Device Manager.
4. Click the plus (+) sign next to System Devices.
5. Right-click the ACPI Fixed Features button and select Uninstall.
6. Restart the system.
NOTE: If the system prompts for the Windows XP CD, specify the location as C:\i386 or C:\i386\drivercache.
On restarting the system, Windows will automatically detect and install Power Management on the computer.
This is it.
Also another tip, set your notebook on something hard so the fan is not covered. I am using a wooden cutting board , when it sits on my ottoman, especially if I keep it running overnight if I file share. The wood absorbs a lot of heat. My gaming time is now too long for my own good. :D Hope this helps. ;D
