Palm Treo 750v gets official
Thanks to countless leaks over the last several months, one of the most anticlimactic smartphone releases in history has finally gone official. Palm has issued all the juicy details on their UK site, and... well, it's pretty much exactly what we expected: internal antenna, quadband GSM with triband UMTS (lending itself to a Cingular release), and a superbly average 1.3-megapixel cam sitting atop Windows Mobile 5 Pocket PC Phone Edition. The phone is still apparently in the pre-order phase, though Vodafone's site is showing a price "From Free to £127.66" (about $240) depending on contract -- not bad considering what you get, but whether similar pricing will carry over to Cingular is another question entirely.

"Can someone help me out and let me know when the HELL is the treo 700p GSM gonna come out?!"
Nope... YOu could try searching google/engadget, if anyone knows that will get you the answer.
This phone seems to be a good deal though, only $240 (wihtout plan)? Even $240 with plan if fair compraed to a lot of other phones coming out now.
apeguero @ Sep 12th 2006 12:47PM
If it really is $240.00 without plan, then does that mean I can buy one from Vodafone and have it shipped here in the US? $240.00 with no contract seems artificially low to me. Also, is that a square screen?

Honestly, how can palm release a new phone without even having released a gsm version of the treo 700p. I've looked around all the forums and the internet and no one even seems to know if a gsm treo 700p is coming out. Any insiders, feel free to divulge a little bit of info/hope...

1) only available in Europe
2) runs Windows Mobile
Yeah, that's 0 for 2. Next!

So, um... why is it that we _still_ don't have a current generation Palm OS GSM Treo in the U.S.?
I've been waiting months to replace my aging, flaky 600 (complete with a nasty stain of forever-orange pixels), but don't want to settle for the 650, and am extremely frustrated by the non-GSM 700p and now this Windows/Europe-only 750.
Come on, Palm! Don't force me (and I'm guessing many others in the same boat) to leave your platform! I WANT TO GIVE YOU MY MONEY. Don't make me buy a Blackberry Pearl or something.
It's beyond inconceivable to me you don't have a current generation GSM model for U.S. customers, and I'm beyond tired of waiting

Lee,
Have you tried Windows Mobile? I have had both palm and windows os type phones. The Windows Mobile 5 OS is great. Or do you just put up with the buggy Palm OS (yes, mine crashed all the time) just because you hate Microsoft?
Chris @ Sep 12th 2006 2:38PM
Interesting details would be the smaller battery (although talk time is listed as the same as the 700w), still no WiFi, uses Mini SD card instead of SD, threaded SMS, 6-way calling, voice command for Calendar access and voice dialing, photo speed dial, and 6 email accounts.
more details are posted here:

"Have you tried Windows Mobile?"
Yep. Hated it. Didn't feel like re-buying all the software I use. Lousy UI, doesn't play nice with my Mac.
PalmOS is not perfect by any means, but it's far superior to WinMob. My 650 crashes occasionally, and that's annoying, but it's still better than Windows.
I also don't like Microsoft very much, but it's mostly because their stuff is so crappy.
PEZ @ Sep 12th 2006 2:53PM
No WiFi, no thanks.

Noone seems to have noticed what I see as the biggest thing about this phone, unless I am wrong its quad band 850/900/1800/1900 GSM and ALSO TRI-BAND UMTS 850/1900/2100 making it the FIRST true world roaming 3G phone, 3G roaming on every continent that offers UMTS.
Edward @ Sep 12th 2006 11:26PM
Honestly, why does everyone claim to need WiFi access on their mobile phones? Carriers hate it, 3G is almost as fast, and I pay $15/month for unlimited data on Sprint. I'd pay at least that much for WiFi hotspot access, and I probably wouldn't use it but twice a month. If I am in a place that has permanent free WiFi (my home, my office, school), I'm likely to have a full blown PC around somewhere. So what exactly are people using/wanting WiFi for on a phone?
Stan @ Sep 13th 2006 3:19AM
is this the same size as all the rest of the 700s? Only for Europe?
Mark @ Sep 18th 2006 1:13PM
I ahve been using the 700w for several months. Prior to that I had several Palm OS phones. I can now say, unequivocally, that WM5 SUCKS! It freezes constantly, there are no good apps out there, the UI is cluncky and inefficient, etc etc. Palm needs to stick with their own platform. If only my company would let me go back...
Kevin @ Oct 19th 2006 9:45AM
For those wanting a GSM version of the 700p, why not just wait another month or so for the Treo 680. Same form factor as the 750v but it'll be released in the US and have Palm OS (I also prefer palm over WM5 as it's much faster and doesn't freeze on me)
