It's been just over 24 hours since
Apple unveiled the
2nd Generation iPod nano, and the first unboxing shots are starting to trickle in.
AppleInsider captured some super close-up images of a green model -- they even exposed some tiny flaws in the metal -- and sat it down for a powwow next to a 1G nano and a podgy 4G iPod. A Flickr user named Justin Williams also photographed the unboxing of his latest splurge, this time in the shadow of his monolithic Cinema Display -- and we thought Apple-heads were
subtle types. Click on for a shot of Justin's blue box, or take your pick of the Read links for more second-gen nano pr0n.

woah.
looks like one of those expensive watch cases!
except the watch is a NANO!
Chris @ Sep 13th 2006 6:34PM
Where are the play/pause, forward, reverse, etc buttons? Do they light up as the iPod powers on like the 3G iPod?
Otherwise, pretty cool. I'd get one once they make them in at least 20gb capacities!
sockatume @ Sep 13th 2006 6:39PM
That is some very, very nice packaging. Chris: the buttons are visible, but only just. The photo's a bit overexposed.
A Concerned Citizen @ Sep 13th 2006 6:46PM
This is an irresponsible waste of plastic. What have we become?
FGT @ Sep 13th 2006 6:50PM
I agree. Sure ti looks nice, but it's a huge waste of plastic! They should have just had a nice cardboard box like the Ipod and saved the plastic to mkae more Ipod's LOL
Shmee150 @ Sep 13th 2006 6:51PM
I got mine this morning: 8gig version.
First person to get one from Apple Regent Street, London the second they started selling.
Was all very exciting and it's a just as nice as you would expect, although having had a 4gig nano for a year now it's a bit too much the same.

Jawknee @ Sep 13th 2006 6:53PM
I have to admit I like the retro mini cases a lot better than the 1G Nano. Now I have to decide between one of these and the Sansa e280. If the 8GB Nano came in Blue the choice would be much easier
IWantTouchScreen @ Sep 13th 2006 6:54PM
I will lose all hope in humanity if people online continue to misuse 'loose'.
Smooth Op @ Sep 13th 2006 6:59PM
Jobs said the packaging was supposed to be more environmentally friendly due to it being 50% smaller in volume, but jeez, it's hard plastic not cardboard like the old nano. At least cardboard is easier to recycle and probably uses fewer hydrocarbons to make.
Chris Basey @ Sep 13th 2006 7:01PM
I thought I was the only one. Why do people find it so bloody hard to spell lose? Drives me up the wall.
Ben @ Sep 13th 2006 7:04PM
the packaging looks sweet ... :)
Ben @ Sep 13th 2006 7:21PM
Why in the hell does it matter that there's a plastic case? Big deal.
Shmoe @ Sep 13th 2006 7:33PM
What a waste of plastic. Apple claims to be environmentally friendly, ha.
mb @ Sep 13th 2006 7:45PM
What's with these photos and the narrow DOF. I want to see the stuff at high resolution, not one contact on the connector in focus...
tf @ Sep 13th 2006 7:47PM
Uhh, folks, yes, the old box was cardboard... on the outside. There was still plenty, i.e. MORE plastic, inside the CARDBOARD box than there is in this much smaller packaging.
Gromit @ Sep 13th 2006 7:49PM
iPods are getting pretty lame now . . . bring out a new color and little extra capacity and call it brand spanking new.
iPods are becoming the New Beetle of the consumer electronics.
Paddy C @ Sep 13th 2006 7:49PM
Wow. That packaging is really disgusting. What a waste!
Looks like Steve-o is wrong and Greenpeace is right.
ftr—I'm a Mac user and overall Apple fan, but I can't support this.
Lee Gibson @ Sep 13th 2006 7:57PM
ONOEZ! THE BOX IS PLASTIC! EVERYBODY PANIC!
Wow. Go find out what it takes to anodize aluminum, and then talk to me about environmental impact.
The packaging is smaller. 1) Reduce.
The packaging could be used to store pencils. 2) Reuse.
Plastic is really easy to 3) Recycle.
What is the problem here.
thegrey @ Sep 13th 2006 8:15PM
It's ok. we found more oil at the outside the Gulf of Mexico. Nothing to cry hear move along.
Shmoe @ Sep 13th 2006 8:33PM
Plastic comes from oil. Think of that when you buy this and wonder why gasoline prices are so high.
Shmoe @ Sep 13th 2006 8:34PM
Plastic comes from oil. After you buy this piece of crap, think about that when you wonder why gasoline prices are so high.

Yawn...
falcompsx @ Sep 13th 2006 8:45PM

rand @ Sep 13th 2006 9:04PM
The box is plastic!!!?!??!??! Does it scratch easily? I hear "class action suit" coming!
Xophonic @ Sep 13th 2006 9:09PM
When Jobs was talking about being environmentally friendly he was saying since the package is smaller they can fit more of them on a plane, truck, boat or whatever. So less fuel will be burned moving them around. He even said that word for word, if you want to read into something at least hear what the person said before attacking. And plastic case OH NOES!!!!! Most fast food places give you that much plastic in your drink cup, straw and plastic dinnerware. Lets get on that before we attack apples plastic case.
Xophonic @ Sep 13th 2006 9:09PM
And before everyone yells, PLASTIC COMES FROM OIL. Yeah, good job. Did they cut down trees and mash them into pulp for cardboard using solar powered chain saws and factories run on smiles and elf farts? No the paper wastes just as much oil in production, even if its recycled paper it takes a few truck rides and gets processed by burning gas. No one said anything about the 3x2 foot plastic shell my xbox 360 bundle came in. So shut up retards and quit wasting energy by typing stupid comments on tech news sites trying to piss people off..

Euan @ Sep 13th 2006 9:27PM
The packaging isn't as nice as the 1G nano. I remember when I opened up my the box and I was in shock at how small it was. Initially I just looked inside and thought, "where is the iPod?". Still the packaging is still cool.
100292 @ Sep 13th 2006 9:53PM
wtf... WHO CARES ABOUT THE PACKAGING!!!
you buy the ipod for the IPOD... OH NOES MY IPOD CAME IN A PLASTIC CASE!!! i dont see why that matters.
on to the actual ipod,, i think it is alright, besides the fact that it looks just as ugly looking as the mini. as far as size is concerned, yes it is damn sexy. I am sick of scratches, but the aluminum casing i just dont like. Thats just my opinion.
On to internals, i was || this close to actually getting the sansa e280 really soon, so its good that apple gave me another product to think about as far as 8gb players are concerned.
I currently own a nano, and the battery has been bugging me ever since i got it so this is definitely a plus. LOL, dude, sites n stuff say my 1st gen ipod nano gets 14 hours of battery life right? I GOT less than 6!!! LOL
I find the movement of the dock connector is F**Ked UP. I mean, what the hell apple you need to move the damn connection and make all accessories via dock USELESS??? thats sofa king wee tod ed.
3rdsun @ Sep 13th 2006 10:16PM
At least the sansa memory is expandable. What a fugly looking piece of crap. Apple can kiss my assets. Bring on the Zune.
ben @ Sep 13th 2006 10:22PM
Wow, I can't wait to wrap my grimey fingers around that! I was planning on buying it at walmart, because I have this $100 walmart gift card, and they haven't ever heard about it. I called the main number (you guess it, 1-800-WALMART) and the lady had no idea about it. She said that she would talk to the "buyer" and get back with me. So, I don't know when I will be able to get. I can't wait though!
Tony C @ Sep 13th 2006 11:10PM
According to the recycle mark on the backside of the storage box, the material is code "7 PC" (PC = polycarbonate), which has little chance of being accepted by most recyclers.
jimmy @ Sep 13th 2006 11:27PM
wait a sec so you guys buy things (such as ipods) to bitch about how you think its not recyclable or "environmently friendly" thats interesting, i thought the ipod was for listening to music.
heres news its even more environmentally friend if you dont buy it at all.
w.e. thats just my $.02
Jeff @ Sep 13th 2006 11:37PM
"Wow. That packaging is really disgusting. What a waste!"
And tell me how many trees Apple had to kill to make the original origami-style iPod boxes.
News flash: plastic isn't any less environmentally friendly than cardboard. Cardboard involves the chopping down of trees, the transport of heavy trees via oil-burning truck, the cutting and milling and sawing and burning of trees using coal and other forms of fossil fuel power. Even recycled cardboard started out this way at some point. Buy cardboard and you are supporting the destruction of the rainforests and the pollution of our atmosphere!
Seriously, chill out about the plastic.
Oh, and I don't see any "flaws" in the metal here either.
btw, I so want an iPod nano now. This is what the nano should have been. I feel sorry for all those suckers that bought the original cheap piece of plastic.
John @ Sep 13th 2006 11:47PM
Wow, those macro pictures make my eye hurt. The depth of field seems uncontrolled.... Anyone else find it unnecessary? All you have to do it face camera straight down so its all in the same plain allowing the whole ipod to be in focus. Oh well.. I assume they used a point and shoot judging by the overexposure. I too feel the box is a waste of plastic..
Rob @ Sep 14th 2006 12:13AM
All these photos of "packaging" and zoom ups of it w/o reference. Put it next to a 1G nano! Geez. Lets see how much "thinnner" it is.
mac-lender @ Sep 14th 2006 1:40AM
Love the new packing, half the fun of buying a product is opening it up for the first time...
PeteC @ Sep 14th 2006 5:54AM
Snife. That's a moronic comment. 13mm is pretty darn thin still. I'll just assume you're some kid who never had a tape walkman in his time as we all coped with carrying them about and they were all over 13mm thick. The old nano needed a case to stop it from getting damaged bringing it close to 13mm anyway with a lot of them. The aluminium coating on the new players probably stops this from being necessary but I bet the screen still scratches up something wicked, unlike my scratch proof screen on my Z5 which has meant i've never needed to have4 it in a case.
Eric @ Sep 14th 2006 7:09AM
Plastic requires crude oil to make
What a waste of plastic in this packaging for 13mm of ipod. *Put it in cardboard*
Plastic is hard to recycle, think about the energy required to recycle it
Apple is SOOOOO not environment friendly
*i wonder if they'll put a chocking hazard lable on teh new shuffles =)*
Simon @ Sep 14th 2006 7:14AM
PlasticCaseLover WTF? The fast food joints e.g. Maccas, KFC, Nandos, Hungry Jacks (please note its australia) i go to use paper/cardboard. which EXCLUSIVE fast food joint do you go to.
With erics comments - guess we can blame Apple on the rising petrol prices...
zoara @ Sep 14th 2006 8:02AM
Rob, comparing it to a 1G nano is such a good idea that, um, that's exactly what the sites did. Both of them.
grindboy @ Sep 14th 2006 12:39PM
It's like a very mini Ipod mini!!
snife @ Sep 14th 2006 3:25PM
I dunno why people keep going on about the sansa.
8gb nano = $249
8gb e280 = $249
8gb nano = 6.5mm thick
8gb e280 = 13mm thick
being twice as thick doesn't even make it an option in my mind.
Rob @ Sep 14th 2006 5:38PM
2 Gigs? Is that all?
I just don't get why everyone is still so gaga over these fixed memory players, when many smartphones and cellphones can take an SD card, giving you 2 essential functions in one device...
MJ @ Sep 15th 2006 10:20AM
Looks like shit. The iPod Shuffle looks better, the old Nanos look better... I mean what is this shit?
Trippy @ Sep 15th 2006 11:14PM
Dispraiser: welcome to capitalism and consumer choice. I know that's evidently a hard concept for you to understand, based on your comment.
Also - where is the iTunes software media?
Dispraiser @ Sep 16th 2006 3:43PM
I still don't fully understand what this offers that a Sandisc Sansa doesn't for a lot less money...
Josh @ Sep 18th 2006 7:19PM
Shut up about the plastic box. It doesn't matter. You're not gonna listen to the packaging anyways...
shawn @ Sep 24th 2006 8:19PM
k, you guys are seriously retarded...these plastic cases.....are RECYCLABLE!! thats RIGHT!!! OMFG!!! they re-melt plastic and can re-use it over and over! plus it is way lighter and smaller which means less fossil fuels to ship it!! so quit bitchin about the cases. apple claims to be envrironmentally freindly and they are so shut up.
Frederic Rouckhout @ Apr 9th 2008 2:13PM
Since the new packaging is transparant they don't need to print cardboard boxes first, wich save time for them.
