2G iPod nano gets splayed
Gutted, splayed, dissected, nekkid -- whatever you call it -- the disassembly of gadget hotness is a tradition of incalculable weight and precedence. It's also dang fun, and today we have the second generation iPod nano's internals all spread out for your viewing pleasure. iLounge did the honors here, so head on over for the full collection.

It hurts just seeing it like this.
iPodNanoPlasticCaseLover @ Sep 14th 2006 11:07PM
yes, this is pretty sad. Reminds me of the time I *tried* to take my mini apart. Thank god I stopped myself before I ruined it (i'm listening to it right now)
Brain @ Sep 14th 2006 11:40PM
Now we just need to see it in a "durability" test >:D
check list:
drop from table
toss in air
scrape on pavement
Toss out of 50mph car
Run over with car
washing machine *dun dun dunnnn*

AHH Li-Po batteries... that could be a HUGH problem, those have a tendency to explode if they get "mad"
JamesB @ Sep 15th 2006 12:04AM
A co-worker of mine who know ZERO about mp3 players was shopping and check these out. She's going for a ZEN. She said that the nano felt too small and was hard to hope - and she's 4'9".
Kurt @ Sep 15th 2006 12:00AM
heh, I like how the warning labels for the battery are on the INSIDE of the case. . .

Do you think Apple used Sony batteries in their new ipods just like Apple used in their laptops as well as Dell's? =D
crescentdave @ Sep 15th 2006 12:08AM
How small is too small? I know I don't like the nanos simply because of their size. Too small for me (but hey, I'm 6'7" and have big hands ... )and I just KNOW I'd lose it. The iPod 30 gb, now, that's like close to perfect size. And, of course, there are other mp3's at that size. So- I'm curious- is there such a thing as too small?
azhure @ Sep 15th 2006 12:17AM
The funny thing, crescentdave, is that I think the Nano is perfectly sized, and that the full sized iPods are too big. I wear my first gen Nano with the necklet earphones, and it is perfect. Hubby dropped our 20Gb second Gen iPod, and now he's getting the new Shuffle - little chance of him dropping that and causing such damage... Most detracting comments I've seen for the Zune are about its size. I guess that's Apple's true marketing genius - different sizes for all and *hopefully* they'll have market saturation.
Boxer5353 @ Sep 15th 2006 12:27AM
What a terrible thing to do to an iPod. However thank god it is the new Nano, because if it was the old one I would have to cry.
STIEN @ Aug 22nd 2007 7:46PM
YES! I love my 1st gen iPod! But the 2nd gen r ugly! i hate the curved sides and u can only get black with a 8 gig!
Jonathan Buford @ Sep 15th 2006 12:21AM
Lithium-Ion Polymer is not the same as the Lithium-Ion that is used in laptops and has a different construction that makes it much more stable (solid electrolyte vs. liquid). So, no flaming Nanos are likely.
Cramidy @ Jan 11th 2007 7:39PM
On the contrary, just about all lithium batteries are volitale enough to explode. you can see here http://www.engadget.com/2006/06/19/ipod-shuffle-wins-battle-with-knife-wielding-owner/. Granted the idiot stabbed the battery with a knife...

crescentdave,
There is such a thing as too small. If you can't easily interface with the device (buttons, screens etc) then its too small.
Here's the catch 22. Most people want small devices so they are portable but they want large screens and easy interfaces.
I like the buttons and overall size but the screen is too small. Answer: internal projector.

Why is it always the people that do these things never know how to do it right? I mean

Why? Why? You ruined a perfect piece of technology :'(
I vote everyone sends the stuff to me, I will carefully take it apart, then send you pics, and then I get the device ;)
pupkick @ Sep 15th 2006 1:22AM
Speaking of durability, I need a case for my 30gb video.. something to protect from not just scratches, but also little drops.. any recommendations?

top ten cases, rated by... I dono, but it rates them as the top 10.
tekdroid @ Sep 15th 2006 2:00AM
embedded batteries are simply wasteful obsolescence. Thank you, Apple (and virtually the entire rest of the industry), for not giving a damn.
Robert @ Sep 15th 2006 2:08AM
Can anyone guess what that small round disk thing is? The one that is attached to the inside bottom (below the click wheel) of the aluminum casing?
Adrian @ Sep 15th 2006 3:22AM
Robert:
I might be wrong but it looks like a backup motherboard-type battery, to retain time, settings, etc when the main battery is exhausted - but I might well be wrong.
Jimbo @ Sep 15th 2006 3:41AM
I'd like to see the brillo and hammer test.
manix @ Sep 15th 2006 4:15AM
Robert:
could be a small speaker for the click sound

You always have to have the losers who cry about "IF THEY HAVE THE MONEY TO BURN THEN WHY ARE THEY RUINING STUFF LIKE THIS"

i think iLougne gets these nanos for free. Ever heard of a review unit. Also most sites seem to dislike keeping review units so it makes sense to take it apart for show - no risk.
hey engadget, can you just take their images like that?
macona @ Sep 15th 2006 12:27PM
I'm not able to read the link, but who says they ruined the ipod taking it apart. Nothing looks damaged. Bet if you put it back together it will still work. Its not like they let the Magic Smoke out...
iPodder Matt @ Sep 15th 2006 4:37PM
Oh no! Fix it, quick!
I bet it's nicer inside than the zune... :P
Rowdehaj @ Sep 16th 2006 2:35PM

If you open that one you'll instantly suffocate on the rush of EVIL-SMOKE coming at you.
Evan @ Sep 15th 2006 6:01PM
And there ladies and gentlemen, is why they can't put a headphone jack on the top...
john @ Nov 15th 2006 7:43PM
what does it say on that warning lable
"do not throw ________"
