You know, there's
home security systems, and then there's
home security systems. While other more low-budget security systems have
webcams that can take pictures of the perp, this Marmitek GSMGuard300 combines the awesome power of window and door sensors with the security tool that should be in everyone's arsenal: text messages. When your door or window is opened, the system will automatically let rip a resounding klaxon and simultaneously will send you a text message. Of course, if you're not near the site an
SMS won't exactly save your stuff from being stolen, nor will it give you a visual record of who stole it, but at least thanks to this €479 device, you'll have the piece of mind to know that your fortress has been breached and the slow-ass po-po can be alerted.

This thing looks like it was built in 1974.
po-po? Engadget... you've reached a new low. You should really start realizing that while many of the squabbles in the comments section makes it seem like the vast majority of your readers are ~16 years old, that's simply not the case. There are quite a few "adults" who visit this site regularly and I have no doubt that they're as tired as I am of the incessant "teen-culture" (aka "really stupid") word and spelling references.
They're called "police", not the po-po... they're "details", not deets... a 0 should not stand in for an o in any word... and mixing up the spelling of a word on purpose never has been, nor ever will be cool.
6 years ago I had a girlfriend who thought she was cool because she called the cops "po-po"... it was sad, but whe was only 19 and apparently didn't know any better... What's Cyrus's excuse?
Things wonderboy hates:
Humor
lightheartedness
puppies.
Back on topic i think it is a terrible idea. the last thing the PO-PO needs are tons of false dispatches from people calling them saying their house is being robbed... and those people will love the charge they get from the PO-PO for those false dispatches.
This is -so- old...I was rolling my own SMS-sending alarm systems five years ago, with the venerable Wismo GSM modules. I even made one that called you, had a voice menu with DTMF commands, and which would let you listen into the robbers having at your property.
Move along, nothing to see....
You were close. ;-)
Things wonderboy hates:
Humor (as teenagers define it... yes)
lightheartedness (not so much)
puppies (okay, you were right on this one)
I agree...while I enjoy reading most of the posts here on Engadget, the phrase "slow ass po po" really lowered the intelligence level of that post. I mean why don't you go ahead and throw in a couple f-bombs and use some racial stereotypes while you're at it?
Like most Marmitek products (and their countless clones) it is most likely to either break when opening the box or after a few months. I ordered X10 switches from them and about 25% - 30% did not even survive the warranty!
Knowing Marmitek, this product will either not work at all or.... will text you every time it sees a mosquito until your SIM card runs out of credit...
This product should not even have been listed on engadget if you ask me. :)
OK. On with the show! NEXT!
There are better home security systems out there, http://www.engadget.com/2006/07/17/make-your-robosapien-into-a-flamosapien/ , for instance.
Don't they have dialers for this kind of stuff?
It would be better if you elaborate more on this product without using a style of language which could offend anyone. And security systems should be more user-friendly, like what we have in Wireless Home Security System. There are also some emergency devices available which are more personal and easier to use.
