Levi's RedWire DLX Jeans reviewed

CNET Asia has a review of this fall's geekiest fashion item/iPod accessory, Levi's new RedWire DLX Jeans. You know, the ones with a sidepocket for carrying your iPod and a big white control pad on the pocket that lets the world know you've got some precious cargo on-board (in addition to pausing, skipping tracks, and raising or lowering the volume on your iPod). Anyway, CNET Asia isn't super-enthusiastic in its review of the jeans, but they do dig the control pad, calling it "intuitive" and praising its hardiness. What they weren't so impressed with were the Levi's-branded headphones that are included, but anyone expecting decent sound knows to upgrade those anyway, right?
[Thanks, denim dude]

I hear that they are making very very little of those jeans at the moment in Asia...
Maybe i should buy some and sell it on eBay
idiot @ Sep 17th 2006 2:05PM
how do you wash it?
znarfaggle @ Sep 17th 2006 2:06PM
hmmm, those headphones look alot like my sennheisers....which suck...
Kris @ Sep 17th 2006 2:32PM
headphones are head phones they are cheap cause they usually end up pulling the wires away from the ear buds.
Just go spend $30 on a quality pair and don't complain about it.
Pedro @ Sep 17th 2006 2:46PM
They're not geeky, they're just dumb; no self-respecting geek would be seen with these monstrosities!
Anyway, no true geek would use an iPod, they'd just solder something together involving an STA013 or something...
Paul @ Sep 17th 2006 3:40PM
I second the person above, how DO you wash them? it seems to be a very large problem to me, you have electric hardware on a pair of clothing? Last time I checked Water and electricity did not mix.
Marc Tew @ Sep 17th 2006 4:54PM
Hi Everyone, after a lil research, the ipod pocket is removable, meaning you can wash them safely. I personally think these are really cool jeans. Yes the headphones arent going to be great, but the thought is there with the retractable cable, maybe if these take off more headphone manufacturers will release such a system?
All in all...cool jeans :)

OMGod - 'Idiot' and 'Paul', either both of you are trying a bit of sarcasm (Apologies if you are) or you are two of the most stupid people on the planet!!! How frickin' stupid? A guess you like staring down juggernauts on the highway.
It GOES WITHOUT SAYING that the iPod support unit is removed for washing!
This is a blog for technology it sttacts smart people to look at smart products, go figure?
Paul @ Sep 17th 2006 6:42PM
To trey, I did not think my post warrented such a flame, but from looking at the pictures it is not clear that the pocket is removable.
Also, it was not posted until two posts later by Marc Tew, that the pocket is removable.
PMX @ Sep 17th 2006 6:45PM
Somehow, I think this is a better idea:
http://www.apple.com/ipodshuffle/
And it works with *all* jeans brands! ;-)
dhruv bhutani @ Sep 18th 2006 5:26AM
i second that. the new shuffle looks so damn sexy . n its small enough 2 fit on anything .
Kevin @ Sep 17th 2006 7:18PM
So now when you get mugged you lose your iPod AND your pants?!? Don't feel like explaining that one to the police. Count me out.
Dayii @ Sep 18th 2006 5:01PM
I agree w/ PMX... the new shuffle is too cute! This is... kind of tacky, and WAY overpriced. Anyone agree?
Aaron @ Sep 17th 2006 11:56PM
Maybe it's just me, but... how long are you going to use that stupid iPod, honestly? Is it worth buying every accessory you can find for it, down to the friggin' pants? Who would buy this?
Also, I didn't realize they made a new iPod Shuffle. That's cool, and reasonably priced. I don't say this often, but... nice work, Apple.
Zac Grose @ Sep 18th 2006 7:19AM
I must agree that the shuffle's a much better idea.
Shyam @ Sep 19th 2006 2:35AM
you dont need a device outside of your pocket to control your ipod, i keep mine inside my "incase" case inside my pocket, usually jeans, sometimes kakkis at work everyday, run the ear phone up the inside of my "clean suit" and i am able to control my ipod straight through my suit, it may look like im "adjusting" myself, well i am, but im just adjusting the song on my ipod, you know left is back and right is foward, a light spin and you can adjust volume, pretty much all the same features of this "gadget" lets just use our brains, and remember where each function is and play with our selves a little bit
playerpaintball @ Sep 25th 2006 6:34PM
that is so stupid having jeans with an ipod i mean come on what next neon lights for our shoes
Tsu-chan @ Sep 26th 2006 12:06PM
Well, I actually just looked at the jeans again, and I noticed those little white buttons. Those are probally how they get off XD And, well, I kinda agree with Pedro - no 'geek' (which I amiably refer to my friends and I) would use an IPod.... I wonder if the jeans work with all MP3 players... That would make them worth it!
Katie @ Sep 26th 2006 6:05PM
Ok where do i begin? These pants are a rediculous. Not everyone wants to hear the crappy music you are listening to. its like walking around with speakers blasting. its really annoying. plus, how do they even get through the wash? if they get ripped or you outgrow them, what a waiste of money! i go through pants really quickly. i just think this is the stupidest idea ive ever heard of.
saress @ Sep 26th 2006 9:15PM
i fist can't figure out why people would want to download a 1000 songs when they are never going to listen to them all, don't get me wrong i like ipods but on pants? that is just a little too obsessive
heidi @ Sep 27th 2006 10:25AM
frankly i dont even see the use for an Ipod. you can do the same amount of downloading on an MP3 player that you spent 20 bucks on at the local walmart. why bother spending 100-300 dollers for an ipod? and then to hook it on your pants??? thats such a bad idea. i belive who ever (inside the levis company) came up with this idea has fallin off their rocker.its just coming up with a new way to shout to the public "hey im rich" as if the prada and louie vuitton bags arnt bad enough. these pants are a total waist of money and jean material.
mik @ Sep 29th 2006 12:59PM
Within both versions of Red Wire pants, I have to say:
The Basic version will work with all mp3 players. Deluxe Version would as well, butyou don't take advantage of the controls on the watch pocket.
Using and iPod is more like a "fashion" that something really worthy. Ipods can store up to 15000 songs, you really won't ever listen em all. I Think The Red Wire Levi's pants were created specifically for those kind of persons. They're $79 the basic version and 250 the one with the cradle controls.
Agree these are not to be considered Geek, but snob.
anyway, I'd like to show off one of these, If I had an iPod.
paul Jason @ Nov 1st 2006 7:31PM
Crazy! We now have ipods that fit with our trainers and now ipods that fir with our jeans. all i can say is that its a great cross marketing scheme... i'm sure there will be loads of people buying these. they are actually cool jeans, shame about the ipod additional bits...
paul Jason @ Nov 1st 2006 7:35PM
re heidi
' i belive who ever (inside the levis company) came up with this idea has fallin off their rocker.'
i actually think that the person who came up with this idea will be very happy when these jeans start selling
