At this point, what with the
black iPod having been out on the market for about a year now, you'd think the
two year old U2Pod would have faded into obscurity like so many other consumer electronics sales gimmicks. In fact, after last week's big Apple event, we were fairly certain the Edge and the iPod had finally parted ways. But not unlike its namesake band, the constructivist iPod may be poised for yet another resurrection. If a particular J&R product listing is to be believed, Bono's new 5.5G iPod is due in short order. The typically reliable J&R explicitly mentions the unit's 60% brighter display,
2nd gen earbuds,
iTunes 7, etc., and their SKU (MA664LL/A) does appear to be different from the last generation U2 iPod with video (MA452LL/A). Go figure. Still, we wouldn't exactly hold our breath on a Stevenote announcing a U2 iPod mysteriously emblazoned with Johnny Depp's face, so to all ye still itching for that red click wheel (who missed your chance before last week), don't yet abandon all hope.

This info is already on the Apple Store, although it's strangely hidden. Click on the iPods, then click on 'Compare specs'. You'll see the new U2 iPod in the last column. If you click on its picture, it'll take you through to a U2 iPod page that specifically mentions the brighter screen and the new battery life, and the new MA664 SKU:

Yep, this is effectively old news. The U2 iPod was silently re-released alongside the new 30GB, with price protection offered on the older stock.
U2? Didn't your dad and mom conceive you to this music? Back before they became just another customized corporate commodity? Yawn. How cutting edge .... zzzzzzzzz.
Maybe they will make a Red iPod with a black click wheel.
I hope they start selling the Harry Potter iPod again with this new enhanced iPod....I wish I had gotten one while they were selling them.

Who cares? I am a Mac user and 5G iPod owner. But really, has anyone even purchased these? I think they are.. ugly. Nothing against U2.

I for one have a 4G U2 iPod since I like how they're unique compared to having the plain old iPod that everyone has, but I admit it is a specific market they're targetting. BTW Chris M., that listing you have on the Apple site fails to mention the addition of games or the new earphones, and they also removed them from the Apple showroom floors, so I don't think thats a 5.5G as much as it is a 5G with a price drop.
However, I was wondering with Think Secret rambling just yesterday about the ever elusive (so elusive I hear it will match Microsoft by coming in three colors... White, Black, and Invisible, which will be of course their primary choice for shipping) Wide/Touch/Screen Video iPod maybe making it to the market by this years end, maybe we can expect the updated U2 iPod to launch at the same time, much like last year they launched the nanos in Sept. and the 5G in October.

Neither does the main new iPod page, so I don't see how this proves that the U2 iPod isn't new.

Who the hell is U2? I remember them from some video on MTV in the 80's where they were doing a concert on a rooftop and got arrested. So, if you get arrested, you get your own iPod model?
According to best buy's "retail insider", which is basically just a little e-newsletter that informs you of new things pertaining to your department, the U2 ipod was updated along with the normal ones.

I think Apple needs to have an annual band iPod update. That would generate more sales. Like mid year after holiday season and before this time when then normally announce new products, they should choose anew band that is really popular, like Red Hot Chili Peppers, or The Killers. Something that I would enjoy making mine unique and I would be excited about buying one instead of it being a chore becuase my old one broke. Maybe they could even have more than one band at a time, like have a popular artist from several genres. Apple needs to realize that when they started selling colors withthe Mini sales were crazy, then when they intoduced the black with 5G iPod and Nanos sales were crazy, they would not have been as good if they hadnt had color Minis or black Nanos and 5G's. Having several artist signed and schemed iPods would boost sales, seriously I would get up right now as I am typing this and buy one; instead of waiting for a rue video iPod.
