The old-iPod iPod dock

Remember how yesterday when we posted about the iPod nano dock fashioned from its own hollow husk, and we said what we really wanted to see was an iPod dock made from an old iPod? You can imagine our surprise when reader Andrew Monks did just that, and emailed in to give us photographic evidence of him tearing open his existing iPod dock, jamming it through the top end of his 3G iPod (which we really hope wasn't still functional), pushing it through a slot he fashioned in the glass of his defunct screen, and properly securing it to make an iPod dock out of his old freaking iPod. We're still a little dumbfounded, but we think this could be the start of a very wonderful, very cannibalistic trend in consumer electronics.

lifesux @ Sep 21st 2006 2:27AM

bob nojob @ Sep 21st 2006 2:28AM
Wow. Who cares!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ditto.
bob nojob @ Sep 21st 2006 5:32AM
Sometimes someone makes a cool mod or "on the cheap" product replacement thats worth hearing about. But I'm tired of reading a post every time some guy glues an ipod cable to something and calls it a dock. If I tape one to my car can I get on the page for having the worlds largest mobile dock. or maybe superglue it to my arm and make the first human dock. we get it, you can cut ipod shaped holes into things and run the cable through. lets move on please.

"That's actually a 3G iPod," said the smug Apple prick whilst sipping his Starbucks latte.
mars @ Sep 21st 2006 2:33AM
BLASPHEMY!
Richard Lai @ Sep 21st 2006 2:40AM
Now that's an idea... What about a dock made from an old xda for the new xda?
seth @ Sep 21st 2006 2:39AM
That's actually a 3g ipod. *sips starbucks*
*smiles smugly*
Sidepocket @ Sep 21st 2006 2:41AM
can't wait to win a Zune so I can turn that into a dock for my 5.5G iPod !
Zeke @ Sep 21st 2006 2:40AM
I just got my 80GB 5.5G in the mail today... It fits in my old 4G dock, so the old iPod is safe.
...or is it...
I'm thinking that instead of the tricks of hiding an iPod in a book or a hollowed out Walkman, I'll just use the old 'pod as a decoy to keep my new one from being mugged. They'll think I'm some idiot walking around with a 4G iPod right in the open, but they won't have a clue about the great new one hiding in my pocket while they run away with a unit that doesn't even support gapless!!!
(OK, Zeke. Calm down. Stop checking engadget past midnight.)
Clover @ Sep 21st 2006 2:43AM
Oh sweet so 3 days later we'll have an iPod baby:p
Matt Dusza @ Sep 21st 2006 6:14PM
Now I wanna see one made out of an old school gameboy
greg @ Sep 21st 2006 3:02AM

Abe @ Sep 21st 2006 6:54PM
Thats what I thought!
...I mean...what?
paul s. @ Sep 21st 2006 3:07AM
The way it's done here almost makes it look like a mirror image.
K MAN @ Sep 21st 2006 3:14AM
I love the new iPods, but in my oppinion, the 3G iPods were the best I've ever owned.
I loved that touch function on every button and wheel.
So without a doubt, I feel pain for the iPod which became a dock.
Rest in Peace.
Alex @ Sep 21st 2006 3:25AM
ditto with Clover and Greg... it just looks, um, kinky... :-O
Nizam Rahman @ Sep 21st 2006 3:33AM
Hot iPod on iPod, incestual action.
Jake @ Sep 21st 2006 3:39AM
What freaking happened to iTunes 7? I can't even get it to open any more. All I get is: "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
I thought Apple didn't do this stuff?
Nizam Rahman @ Sep 21st 2006 3:46AM
Dude, I can't even install the darn thing on my PC.
Count me lucky on one hand, unlucky on the other.
StandardAI @ Sep 21st 2006 4:09PM
Can they stop with these? This is the 3rd one I've seen so far the past week. We get it, you can turn any object in to an ipod dock with enough time on your hands. We don't need any more demonstrations to prove this. All an engadget reader has to do is close their eyes and picture any object with the default cord jammed in it to get the idea.
kinger @ Sep 23rd 2006 12:28PM
if you dont like the article then dont read it. you can tell what its about from the title. Just move on to the next
Shmoe @ Sep 21st 2006 4:01AM
I'd turn it into a dock for a Gigabeat S or maybe a Zune.
Shmoe @ Sep 21st 2006 4:02AM

Shunnabunich @ Sep 21st 2006 5:25AM
And nobody's remarked how much it reminds them of the alien-coming-out-of-the-stomach scene?! C'mon, people! Don't be slouching! :D
Ebzy @ Sep 21st 2006 5:59AM
now a beheaded teddy bear ipod dock or a decapitated flashing-red-arsed-baboon ipod dock would really take the proverbial piss.
Igor @ Sep 21st 2006 6:45AM
now if someone made a dock from ipod and ipod from a dock, that would be interesting
Jia @ Sep 23rd 2006 9:45AM
太残忍了~~~
Fuzz Martin @ Sep 21st 2006 8:32AM
That is some hot iPod on iPod action.
Actually... it's pretty lame.
But anyway.
John Hinds @ Sep 21st 2006 9:11AM
If you could control the 5G iPod with the 3G iPods control wheel then I would be impressed.
Randy @ Sep 21st 2006 9:34AM
Oh I remember the day when we use to gut an the old Macintosh computers and take the CRT out and build diaramas for christmas using the 64K RAM chips with pipe cleaners and corks to make "RAM Deer". The look on customers faces was CLASSIC...."WHA! I paid 5,000 for that thing just a few years ago!" Also those original Mac made FANTASTIC door stops, with built in handle and all.

"That's so you can attach a chain and use it as a BOAT ANCHOR"
Jayson @ Sep 21st 2006 9:39AM
Would it be possible for you guys to start a new site called EngadgetiPodDock.com? This way we can more easily ignore this crap that has nothing to do with technology. What has happened to Engadget?
I just answered my own question by scrolling to the top and seeing the name Ryan Block. Once again associated with incorrect or useless information.
kinger @ Sep 23rd 2006 12:25PM
If you dont want to read the article, then dont click on it. Just scroll down and stop posting fucking comments of how this article is lame. Just dont fucking read it. It must not suck that much if you spent the time to read it and post a comment. If you dont have anything nice to say the SHUT THE FUCK UP
Mrfreezie @ Sep 21st 2006 10:25AM
That is really cool.
It's also kind of scary.
RIP 3G iPod.
bpc @ Sep 21st 2006 10:26AM
Re: Haters, naysayers, and generally negative folks,
Engadget, if for some reason you've forgotten, is a BLOG, not a newswire. This isn't Reuters, or the BBC, or (thanks Jesus) FoxNews. If the editors want to tell me about how somebody turned their ass into an iPod dock, fine; I'm here to be entertained by and informed of the tech world's goings on, not every major tech news story. Would I find it odd if Mr. Block started doing atricles about his funny flat-topped hats? Of course. Would I get over it?? Almost definitely.
So to the writers, keep up the good work. To the readers, let's keep enjoying Engadget, however the hipster nerds who write it decide to give it to us.
doyouflip @ Sep 21st 2006 11:24AM
This almost inspires me to turn my MDA/Wizard into a dock for my car or favorite sledge hammer.
mugen @ Sep 21st 2006 11:42AM
this reminds me of Monty Python's song:
"Sit on my face and tell me that you love me"

It's always nice to breathe new life into an old gadget that you blew a couple hundred bucks on right?
scott @ Sep 21st 2006 11:50AM
that looks more like an iPod Quickie than an iPod Dock...
Falsoman @ Sep 21st 2006 12:38PM
Is this some sort of Granny incest techno porn?
threefingeredlord @ Sep 21st 2006 3:44PM
I usually just ignore ipod news but this one made me laugh. Especially Shmoes comment.
Sam Gross @ Sep 21st 2006 8:02PM
Why would you turn a classic piece of hardware into some dumb thing like that. Its like how everyone in the 50s tore up Ford Model A s to make hot rods, and now the Model As are priceless. if you have a 1-3g iPod keep it. with the way the iPod trend is going, there is going to be huge demand for classic iPods in 10-15 years. (its like cars, noone thought they would be classics, and that there would always be more...)
tucker @ Sep 21st 2006 3:28PM
com'n now, i love my 3ed gen more than anything. this is sad.
tiuk @ Sep 21st 2006 3:41PM
To all those bitching about so many iPod dock posts, keep in mind this one was probably only posted because it's exactly what they said they wished someone would do yesterday. Come on, they've got to post that.
