You guys have voiced your concerns, and we heard ya:
the new Engadget didn't play very well with some mobile browsers (Pocket IE, we're looking at you...), so we figured now's as good a time as any to get a proper mobile version of the site rolled out. We've been promising it since forever, but now you can just point your WAP compatible mobile browser at
engadget.com and let the magic happen -- no need to fuss with those annoying mobile subdomains, or worse,
crappy .mobi TLDs. It works with most of phones and browsers we've tried it with around here at Engadget HQ, like:
- Pocket IE (Smartphone and Pocket PC)
- Blazer (Palm OS)
- BlackBerry handsets
That should be about 85% of you right there (or so we hope). Thus far we've seen problems with the Sidekick3, PSP, Opera Mini (Java), and some Motorola handsets that weren't so happy with our WAP site; for almost everything else that's WAP enabled, however, it should serve up the new mobile version just fine. We're still working to roll out new portions of the site to our mobile users (including mobile Engadget Mobile -- aw yeah!), so stay tuned for future features. Please leave us your feedback in the comments, and let us know if your phone isn't working right with mobile Engadget (just don't be surprised if we email you for to help us troubleshoot). Enjoy!
P.S. -If you want comments and the rest of the stuff on Engadget, or are still having issues in the mean time, we recommend using
IYHY (for now).
P.P.S. -As always, mad props to our tech team! Especially
Gavin for working on his damn birthday!

Same here for the Siemens S65 (http://www.benq-siemens.com/cds/frontdoor/0,2241,hq_en_0_130780_0_sub%253A130312_cat%253A130352_filt%253Adeviceconnectivity4_view%253Aabout_spec%253A0_ab%253A0_clr%253A0_clrNum%253A1,00.html) built in browser (OpenWave 7), except that when reading an article the title caption is bright red and VERY VERY BIG, which is annoying.
It does seem to work fine in Opera Mini java client on this phone. But then again, the original site did that in Opera Mini and I still get to see that instead of minimalistic WAP formated version right now.
Rcadden @ Sep 26th 2006 8:41AM
Awesome. I've been wondering when you guys were going to roll out a wap version. Good job, Team Engadget!
Kansei @ Sep 26th 2006 8:50AM
so what's the problem with opera mini? It doesn't label itself as a mobile browser, but the web site was just fine as of like a week ago on opera mini. Opera handles small screen rendering pretty well.
I'll go check it out now with the browsers on my phone.
Pacey @ Sep 26th 2006 8:54AM
Works on my dell x50v.
Thanks guys.
T Nguyen @ Sep 26th 2006 8:56AM
wow baby, really good work and it looks awesome on the BB 8700g. By the way, it took kinda long to pull the site up, anybody has the same problem?
when this is gonna be done with engadgetmobile? lol
Chris Whiteley @ Sep 26th 2006 8:57AM
Works a treat on K800i. Cheers guys.
Gus Brown @ Sep 26th 2006 8:59AM
Awesome job - looks great with Blazer on my 700p
Ebbe Kristensen @ Sep 26th 2006 9:02AM
Works on my good ole' SE T630.
John Stracke @ Sep 26th 2006 9:07AM
Works on the Nokia browser on my Nokia 6682. The 6682 also comes with Opera, and that doesn't work; the site doesn't recognize it as a phone.
Steve S @ Sep 26th 2006 9:08AM
Works great on my treo 650!
derf @ Sep 26th 2006 9:14AM
Sha-weeeeet! Just browsed there on my 700wx. I must say, this will be one of my most visited mobile sites. Thanks!
Will @ Sep 26th 2006 9:17AM
What about the PSP what happens if you point the PSP web browser to Engadget will it see the mobile site, if not is there a sub domain you can point it to so that you can get to the mobile site on the PSP?
Lorenzo @ Sep 26th 2006 9:32AM
Works quite well on the P910a. Excellent!
andy @ Sep 26th 2006 9:35AM
works well with Blackberry 8700c
phi @ Sep 26th 2006 9:40AM
the new engadget doesn't look too nice on the nokia 770 either. The left column where all the content is is squooshed when you've got optimized viewing on. then again, i have my default font set a little larger than the default size.
TexRob @ Sep 26th 2006 9:52AM
Working like a champ on Blackberry 8100 Pearl. I was pretty shocked when I tried to fire up Engadget and you all didn't have a mobile version when I checked last week. Good timing!
Only suggestion would be if there was a way to make the headlines a little smaller, they seem huge on my 8100.
Alex @ Sep 26th 2006 9:52AM
By the way, PS stands for Post-Script, and PSS stands for Post-Script-Script... that makes no sense. Should be PPS. Haha.
morgan @ Sep 26th 2006 9:56AM
Works ok on my sidekick 3. Not perfect, but I can see all the articles, just missing the right column stuff.
David @ Sep 26th 2006 9:59AM
since many months ago i have used my samsung d600 to surf engadget, and engadget mobile, and i never had troubles with it, neither with the new version of the site, even i write comments with opera mini!
AL @ Sep 26th 2006 10:07AM
Ah this will help no end with my data costs when i'm checking out live keynote coverage on the train!
Thanks guys :-)
SK @ Oct 3rd 2006 12:05PM
Thanks, this is a huge help. The pictures were great but took forever to load. This thing is quick and easy.
Jonathan @ Sep 26th 2006 10:31AM
Works perfect on my Vodafone v1605 (HTC TyTn) too, great work!
Unfortunately no such luck for the engadgetmobile and engadgethd sites, but one step at a time.
It would be nice though to have the option of choosing which website you use by having a different url for the mobile version (e.g. www.engadget.com/wap), so you can see the comments etc. if you want to without IYHY.
Optom @ Sep 26th 2006 10:48AM
Works well with the T-mobile Vario II (HTC Hermes).
THANK YOU
Brian from Texas @ Sep 26th 2006 10:54AM
Confirmed working on Nokia 6233.
Mitch @ Sep 26th 2006 11:10AM
Works pretty nicely. But I liked it better before (before the latest engadget.com refresh). The full site looked better on my phone. This new WAP version is too slow-data friendly. I want pictures, comments and colors, damnit! :(
Please spare engadgetmobile.com from this.
Chris @ Sep 26th 2006 11:10AM
Very nice - a lot better on my Blackberry than the previous version. One suggestion: at the bottom of the page you have a link to the full verison of the site. Why not put this at the very top of the page? That way I don't have to scroll all the way down to see the nice pics of photoshop-mockups of the iPhone.
Chris @ Sep 26th 2006 11:12AM
Darn posted too soon!
Photo's are not appearing on the secondary pages for me. Blackberry 7105t.
Tydaking @ Sep 26th 2006 11:14AM
Works like a champ on my Verizon XV6700 ppc..
Rob P @ Sep 26th 2006 11:18AM
Works great on my LG CU500. Even working off an edge network it loaded up quick. Good job guys.
PanMan @ Sep 26th 2006 11:21AM
Isn't there a way to forge the detection, on, say, opera mini? I guess the problem is in identifying it? So, why not let me visit mobile.engadget or so, letting me indicate that i'd like the mobile version. Or is there another problem?
Nathan @ Sep 26th 2006 11:43AM
This is fantastic--works beautifully on my Q.
dhgc @ Sep 26th 2006 11:56AM
Doesn't work on my Nokia 9300i. is there a direct link address to the page?
badnegro @ Sep 26th 2006 11:57AM
Excellent folks. Looks great on my T-Mo MDA. Props EnG...
Soleil @ Sep 26th 2006 12:15PM
Yeah!!! Thank you! I can now resume reading engadget during class. I'm saved!
Jake Coogle @ Sep 26th 2006 12:25PM
1) I've been waiting for a version of engadget that doesn't look like crap on my pocketpc. This displays perfectly on mine.
2) Not to be a pain, but P.S. stands for Post Scriptum (after the main document); so, the second one would be P.P.S. or Post Post Scriptum (after the P.S.).
mrtn @ Sep 26th 2006 12:27PM
Does not work on Nokia E61, browser is not recognized and renders full page.
Ben @ Sep 26th 2006 7:17PM
Likewise for the E70's identical operating system. Renders in full.
Quizzle @ Sep 26th 2006 12:34PM
Works on my xv6600, however, I think i prefer the way google displays engadget on my mobile. http://google.com/gwt/n?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.engadget.com
Hugh Jass @ Sep 26th 2006 12:50PM
It's glorious. Runs great in Blazer!
Martin W @ Sep 26th 2006 12:54PM
This is clearly not geared with EVDO and HSDPA devices. My Treo 700p could chomp down the old version with ease, and graphics can always be turned off in the browser (but that's useful now when in an non-EVDO area).
I actually thought engadget was broken this morning when browsing through my phone. Anyway, my suggestion is to make an EVDO/HSDPA engadget that keeps the colors and photos, but loses the gazillion links on the right.
rgm @ Sep 26th 2006 1:19PM
Awesome, works great on OpenWave 6. Would be nice to get a sentence or two from the article after the headlines.
Ritz Furniture Gallery @ Sep 26th 2006 1:26PM
I like Google Mobile Optimizer (http://www.google.com/gwt/n) over IYHY. You can choose whether to include images or not.
Ross Carlson @ Sep 26th 2006 1:31PM
It's about time - I love reading Engadget but it was always such a pain on my Treo 700w. Thanks for doing this...
I wish the main Engadget site looked as good as the new mobile one - I know you guys worked hard on it but it's a HUGE step backwards in design if you ask me. I go back to EngadgetMobile and think, "Ah, there's that great looking design..."
Stephen Yuan @ Sep 26th 2006 1:41PM

Grant @ Sep 26th 2006 3:27PM
Working great on my HTC Wizard. I'm so friggn excited, I've been waiting for this forever. My only wish is that it would display some sort of picture under the title (It makes me want to read a story that the title may not)
Carlos @ Sep 26th 2006 3:52PM
Works great on the Motorola Q!
