Despite the immense amount of
shiny going on in Apple's own
Front Row media app, the feature set falls woefully short of a full-blown Media Center killer for the Mac. Now it looks like the
SageTV peeps are going to pick up the slack and port their well-loved media app to Mac OS X. Their latest edition of the software, SageTV V5 -- which is already available for Windows and
Linux -- includes support for
SageTV Placeshifter on Windows, so hopefully SageTV finds time to squeeze that into the Mac edition so Apple users can finally get down with their TV-on-the-go selves. Right now SageTV is seeking out beta testers for a closed beta that should take place in the next few weeks, so it doesn't look like the Mac heads among us will have too terribly long to wait.
Take it to the Max!!
I'm curious if they are also going to develop drivers for the variety of TV tuner cards that currently work w/ Sage. Otherwise I don't seeing this creating a lot of demand for the software. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
It would be REALLY nice if Apple would make a plugin API for FrontRow. If Apples won't add a CableCARD slot to the Mini or iTV, at least let someone else have a go. Also, it would encourage third-party support, since other companies will have a chance to complement what Apple does instead of being replaced by them (cf. Konfabulator, many others).
MAX FOREVER!
Too bad SageTV is the uglies out all of the media center software out there. I mean, c'mon, it looks about as bad as the junk you get from the cable companies.
Mac 2006 = Windows XP Media Center 2002. Welcome Mac users!
