Sony's PSP-compatible SRS-U10 universal speaker
Sony PSP owners, take heart -- you've been given some fairly awful excuses for PSP sound systems in your day, while Apple's little white cash cow has gotten the pick of the litter. To remedy that imbalance, Sony itself is finally stepping up to the plate and releasing the PSP-friendly SRS-U10 speaker. Instead of modeling itself after an iPod HiFi experiment gone terribly wrong, Sony has dropped an oh-so-glamorous docking speaker station for your PSP, DAP of choice, or essentially anything with an audio output. But before you go and get too giddy, however, we should point out this impressive looking device boasts just 3.6 watts of power, although it does dock and charge your PSP whether pumping tunes or not. While further details (like when this thing will hit stores) aren't yet known, it's probably safe to assume that it'll cost substantially more than any poor (style-conscious) soul should be asked to pay -- but hey, that's Sony for ya.

How bout some games sony? What happened to those?
PodMonkeys @ Oct 5th 2006 2:45PM
It actually doesn't look that bad. Of course, designing the dock so that the audio plug was part of a dock, instead of a loose wire, and it'd have looked even better.

"but hey, that's sony for ya"
In that same respect.. hey that's Microsoft for ya. Thats BUISNESS for ya. That's every other company that makes quality products for ya.
Want something affordable buy something that's cheap and made poorly. Im certain it won't be completely out of the question.
Just 1 more instance of trash talk. Be it not very much, I can't seem to find one recent post on this site or Joystiq that doesn't try and start a rise out of their reader by commenting something negative on the article.
Im happy to FINALLY see a speaker system for my PSP that will charge and play while delivering a quality sound. Thank you Sony.

So people actually use their PSP for music?
Arvind Ganesh @ Oct 5th 2006 3:17PM
You guys gotta stop being so hard on Sony. The PSP has plenty of users out there that might be looking forward to a product such as this. I, for one, would really consider buying this. Need to know price, date though..
Arvind Ganesh @ Oct 5th 2006 3:19PM
And, why doesn't it come in black!!
Rock Stone @ Oct 5th 2006 4:00PM
l can, with confidence, say that people DO listen to music with their PSPs - streaming radio, videos with sound, etc. but this should support a wireless Remote Control for the PSP. not taking advantage of the plug for the wired remote to add functionality is just dumb Sony.
Afroloop @ Oct 5th 2006 4:29PM
That's a nice looking glass of water.

The PSP is dead.
When you start seeing more information about accessories than games a Video GAME Console is officially dead.
What a waste of my hard earned $300. I could have bought half a PS3(yeah right, but the way it is shaping up unless you are bleeding edge technology you will only get to use half the features of the system anyway, and since games won't be worth the $60+ you better be able to do more with the system than just play games... sounds just like the PSP... interesting), or better yet 2 Nintendo DS, or a Wii and a game...
I'm sorry Nintendo, I should have never left you! The PSP was just so black and shiny... I thought it could be my everything. My game console, my MP3 player, my portable movie player, my portable internet, my GPS, my PDA... but instead it took all my money and gave me nothing in return, but it became MYLO(which means another $350 for functionality that I should have gotten in the first place). Thank you for accepting me back with open arms.
Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
I really like that noise!

Nintendo might end up just like Sega and the PSP is not dead nor it would die any time soon.
George @ Oct 5th 2006 7:23PM
AllegedFanBoy? - but sony is known for making products similiar to other major companies but for more money. their tvs are way more than some other quality companies and there are not any better usually. Their hard drive mp3 players werent great but cost about $50 more than an ipod when it came out. Look at the ps3, yet another example.
myscrnnm @ Oct 5th 2006 7:46PM
@ Porsche 911
Good thinking. I have no sympathy for Nintendo though.
@ George
Sony's products are more expensive because they're better. You can't just look at the price, it's the value that matters. Their TVs are also way better than most other company's because they've been using LCoS for so long (their patented SXRD technology was in PopSci's 100 Best lineup). Also, their hard drive MP3 players were superior to not only the iPod, but virtually all other MP3 players on the market at the time. The NW-HD1 had only 20GB of storage capacity compared to their iPod's 20 and 40, and yet it had a theoretical maximum of up to 13,000 due to its high-density ATRAC3 compression codec (compared with Apple's 10,000 songs with 40GB using AAC). Not to mention the NW-HD1 was also smaller, and more durable than the iPod, due to its use of a brushed aluminum case. The only reason the NW-HD1 failed was due to the fact that everyone knew about the iPod, but no one knew about the Network Walkman.
ALso, don't even get me started on the PlayStation 3. The PlayStation 3 is arguably the second best gaming console ever made (after the PlayStation 2). The PlayStation 3 is anything but overpriced. First of all, the most obvious part is the Blu-ray player, which would cost $800-1,000 for a standalone, and $750-850 for an internal burner drive. Second of all, the Cell processor. Studies have shown that the Cell processor performs precision scientific calculations at three times the speed of the Intel Itanium 2 processor, and twelve times the speed of the AMD Opteron processor. Considering that the offerings from both Intel and AMD are server-level CPUs, the Cell, in terms of practical value, is already worth more than the $600 that the PlayStation 3 will be retailing for. Also, XDR DRAM. If you know anything about electronic devices, you'll know that your system is only as good as your worst component. The problem with most computers is that their RAM is too slow, and not their CPU. The PlayStation 3's RAM is clocked to 3.2GHz, the same speed as the CPU, which means that they will be able to run operations at the same rate, as opposed to the Xbox 360's 3.2GHz Xenon processor and 700MHz GDDR3 RAM. I can list a lot more things that make the PlayStation 3 seem underpriced, but I think this should be enough for now.

I listen to music on my psp, but i probally wouldnt bother with this. I might at some point, but not now with the memory is expensive and low.
Currently my music is low quality which works with the not so good sound and speakers.
But i wouldnt pay for something like this unless the memory price dropped a lot, or if the cheep chinese copys got around more
Things I would like to see.
1. A wordpad type writing document for the psp. This would also let me read things on my psp.
2. Somewhere where i can save webpages and view them later rather than in the browser would be useful.
3. Ability to deal with podcasts.
4. A way of downloading an unziping zip and rar files. So I can download an image files zip and view them.
That would make my psp much more useable for me.
More formats for music, video, images would be nice too.
Would you like if it could do these things?
rory @ Nov 4th 2006 5:00AM
that would be very nice in shiny gloss black
