DSM to kick copper speeds up to 100 Mbps
While everyone's getting all excited by that FiOS, fiber-to-the-home, fiber-in-the-home or even Google's alleged DWDM -- there's another futuristic bandwidth project currently afoot, the Dynamic Spectrum Management. The advantage of DSM -- which aims to replace DSL if its creators have their way -- is to use current copper wiring to create 100Mbps service in the home by futzing with the way that signals and packets are processed and transferred. Naturally, if DSM turns out to work, it would likely be a much cheaper alternative to digging trenches for fiber in the ground. In any case, this requires a fair amount of cooperation between those telecom firms who control the pipes, and so today, a group of tech and telecom companies (including the Israeli firm ECI Telecom and the Spanish giant Telefonica), have joined forces to try to work out all of DSM's kinks. The consortium announced that it will receive €8 million ($10 million) in grant money over the next three years from the Chief Scientist Office of Israel. [Via Reuters]

" this requires a fair amount of cooperation between those telecom firms who control the pipes" considering Verizon owns the whole northeeast and are the leaders in FIOS id say they wont be cooperating any time soon.
i thought it was a dump truck?
I've had a 1Gb/s link running between the computers in my house for years. And yet even that is 10 year old technology. Unfortunately while my computers are talking like it's 1996 the outside world is still talking to them like it's 1970.
"Controlling the pipes" as it were is a euphemism for charging more money for less tech. Anyone working on datacom/telecom equipment are holding their stomachs after reading this post.
I can only imagine that the general public is afraid of fiber because it's only demand that is keeping them in the 1970s.
Why would they want to put something in the ground that they know wont be able to keep up in 10 or 20 years?..... Fiber is the way to go and there shouldn't be anyone challenging that.
What do you mean "to put something in the ground"? Copper is already laid everywhere across the U.S. All they would need here is the co-operation of the telecoms to put in the proper switches for altering the way the packets are processed and transferred.
Fiber optics are still a decade away for small-scale testing and even further for wide-scale implentation. Not to mention the cost passed on to the consumer by the telecoms to pay for laying down their new fiber optic network.
It may make sense to have fiber in high density areas like the northeast, but out in the midwest, it's too costly. Fortunately Verizon can't poopoo this technology in the midwest.
ATT/SBC owns all of the copper out here. This is perfect for a competitor to the always aweful Charter Cable. I hope they roll it out very quickly. I'd like to see my cable/internet bill drop.
i live in a city of fifty thousand, about fifty miles from chicago and milwaukee,wi. and our area isnt profitable enough to put Fiber in. disgusting. and i totally agree that charter sucks. if it wasnt that the other hispeed option in my area is att, i would switch.
You should think you're self lucky if you've got Copper in your area, in my part of the country, they skimped and laid Aluminium wiring, which doesn't conduct as well. Cheapskates.
Some of us in Verizon's coverage area, that do not even have DSL yet, won't see Fiber for 25+ years according to my last inquire to Verizon.
Yeah, you guys are hosed. Us on ATT/SBC stand a chance. It's the guys with loads of rural service that stand a chance at getting this in order to compete with the cable companies.
I think Verizon is serious about capturing metro areas with fiber. They're already installing in NY if you guys didn't realize that.
"Why would they want to put something in the ground that they know wont be able to keep up in 10 or 20 years?..... Fiber is the way to go and there shouldn't be anyone challenging that."
I'll tell you why. Verizion is paying how much for fiber to the home (FIOS)? I think it's close to $20 billion in Capital expense. The cost of building out the components of DSM into the existing infrastructure will be significantly lower.
In 10 to 20 years, fiber's cost will have come down enough to make running it to the home more affordable. In the meantime, companies can run fiber in new developments instead of spending close to $9,000 a home to replace the copper plant.
at&t, TAKE NOTE OF THIS! I''m sick of att's super slow speeds. Its fast, but just not fast enough. A load more than a video stream and the internet connection wont be able to do anything but finish. The video stream is extremely low quality streams too! Their pricing, I dont like. They recently increased the pricing on their plans while eliminating contracts. The sad thing is, now they are selling their products at same price with half the speed. Att really needs to get their act together. They need to adopt this thing to boost their copper line speeds. Their fiber optic is being laid down in my area, but we wont be able to get it for another half a year at least. Seriously, they need this. The only other high speed internet provider in my area is Comcast. The problem is, they are extremely unreliable according to my friends. They keep saying that their connection speed varies widely a lot. Another is that they are EXPENSIVE. Jeez, either get your acts together or get another competitor into the game. They can introduce this service using upgraded copper speeds pretty quick compared to their fiber optics. They have got to hurry up on their roll outs. U-verse is included too! I saw the pricing for the U verse in Texas, and it seems pretty expensive to me. They only offered some minor features that the cable company dont provide and only slightly cheaper price. The best features in IPTV have yet to be here.
Apologies if some of my writing was a bit off topic. It is just my fustration with the two monopolies in my area -- Comcast and ATT. Wish it was like dial up where I have a choice of over 100 companies to choose from.
