Neuros OSD in the flesh
We got live and personal with the Neuros OSD unit, which is currently in "beta," but should have some decent software capabilities once those open source whiz kids work their magic. There's nothing much to see as far as the unit itself, but it's not too bad in the looks department, and should be small enough to sneak into most home theaters unnoticed. You know the drill, more pics after the break.

Someone needs to get some MythTv running on this piece.
danisaacs @ Oct 13th 2006 12:12AM
Meh. I'll wait and see what Apple has in store for us next year.

Hack HD into it and I want one.

The unit isn't powerful enough to run a full blown MythTV setup, but it could most likely at least function as a front end. I should probably start using the unit I bought from ThinkGeek, but it's been collecting dust while I work on my MythTV and XBMC boxes... durn it.

Neuros say HD support in '07...

I got mine from ThinkGeek, and tried it out. It's *slow*. Very sluggish response to user actions (I didn't time it, but at least half a second), and unable to play some of my Ogg files without skipping.
Fortunately, I didn't get it to be a media player; I got it to be a secondary DNS server. It should be able to handle that. :-)

Mind you, to be fair, it played the AVI file I threw at it (MPEG4 video plus MP3 audio) smoothly, so I presume it's only the ARM CPU that's underpowered; the MPEG stuff, done in the DSP, is fine.

Oh man, Forget the Neuros. Where can I get me one of them white samsung flat screens?!
Chucky @ Oct 13th 2006 11:17AM
You can get them pretty much everywhere you can get the black ones. Amazon, B&H, NewEgg, etc. The series in the photo is the 51. The product code ends in "51W" instead of "51D".

Best Buy has the white one in 19 and 23 inch models. I believe the 19 is around $500 and the 23 is around $800. The 23 always looks to have considerably better quality though than the 19 so I'm saving up for the 23...

It is all well and good that Apple will come out with a media player in Q1, but I'm expecting it to be completely locked down.
I hope that the Neuros OSD will be a good replacement for a hacked Xbox running XMBC as we move into the HD era.

Hey I just bought one of these. I'm wondering if a standard external hard drive with usb 2.0 on it will work with this mug. Anyone have any theories or answers for me? thanks!
haruman @ Nov 28th 2007 5:07PM
Neuros with HD hopefully in '08!
