Verizon to get its own MOTORAZR MAXX
We can almost hear the voices of skeptical readers whispering in unison, "fanboy Photoshop," and we'd normally have half a mind to agree. After all, the bizarre gray exterior (just a reflection, perhaps?) seems incongruent with the rest of the phone, the contents of the external display are obviously faked, and the coloration of the Verizon logo doesn't make a lot of sense -- not to mention that the concept of a CDMA-based MOTORAZR MAXX is a bit... shall we say, new to us. Alas, it turns out the picture's authenticity is rock solid (not to say it's not a Photoshop job, but if it is, it's an official one) seeing how we just downloaded it off Motorola's official site for press multimedia. We know nothing about it besides what we're seeing here, but truth be told, the picture alone is a lot to process: Verizon gets a strangely colored variant of a high-end RAZR we didn't even know existed. It looks like a 2-megapixel cam is in the cards, and if the specs mirror its GSM cousin, we can expect a QVGA display, microSD expansion, and 50 odd megabytes of internal storage -- not a bad piece to slot in right above the K1m, if we do say so ourselves. As soon as we catch wind of availability (or catch wind that Motorola is playing an extraordinarily unsportsmanlike practical joke on us), we'll pass on the good word.

Wow; what a shock! I never thought U.S. carriers would embrace a phone of this caliber. It looks absolutely amazing! Too bad I'll still have to pay for an unlocked MAXX if I want one, since I'm on T-Mobile and have no intention of switching.
Eh.. it looks pretty fugly to me.
Wow. If that thing is real, I know what phone I'm getting from Verizon when my contract is up for renewal. Sexy.
Cheers,
Darius
Lets hope it doesn't turn out to just be falsely photoshopped the black xbox360 [rolls eyes]
Please, can Motorola please drop the tiny 2MP camera? A 3MP camera with better glass, maybe Xenon flash would be nice to see.
How does that looks sexy? The KRZR actually looks better than that thing. I guess everyone has their own taste.
I call shenanigans.
this phone is pretty old...i am currently using the razr v3x which is about 10000 times better than a normal crappy razr. people kept asking motorola if v3x was gonna get released in NA so motorola finally decided to release the moto maxx a year later. but with better phones coming out, re-releasing a year old phone isnt going to do motorola much good. i love my v3x but if i were to get a new phone it would not be that, considering the w850 just came out and the n95 is coming out soon.
Yes this is similar to your V3x, but your V3x is thick as hell. The MAXX is the thickness of a regular razr.
I got one fro Verizon and none of the network features except calling work. Is that the same for you?
Paul
why would anyone be excited about a motorola phone anyway?
That is a horrible phone. Goes against the sleek lines of other Motorola phones. They seem to be getting overly confident with their RAZR design. Oh well, all good things must come to an end. It looks like this is the beginning of it.
For the guy that said that 2MP sucks and it should be a 3MP....I assume you dont live in the US...The average new phone here is 1.3MP...which means 2MP is a good bump up.
Photoshop.
Any word on how many different ways Verizon has handicapped this phone into the stone age?
All I use my phone for is to make and receive calls. I don't need it to be a camera, MP3 player, calender, satellite tracking system or whatever else they into these things, just give me a decent phone with good reception and I will be happy. My phone does have a camera but I don't think I have taken two pictures with it, I have a regular digital camera for that. As far as the ring-tones go I keep my phone on vibrate so I don't bother those around me with some gay a$$ little tune that I think is cute but is really annoying to everyone else. I guess I am just showing my age, I guess if I was still 15 or 16 I would be into the ring-tones, wallpaper and all the other frivolous stuff like that.
your in luck. under verizon you wont receive any of those frivolous (cough* standard) features without wasting lots of money
Nice Work Engadget! :)
If this is real, it'll be great for me. I'm the type that goes traveling every so often and I like to have everything in 1 device (1 power brick is better than 5/6/however many devices I bring). But, I already use a phone from Japan that has a 3.2MP camera, so this will be a step down. If I decide to go CDMA, though, this would be great (Come on, Helio, get something better- I don't want Verizon) even if I end up having to bring a couple of extra batteries.
Is it the same form factor as the V3 RAZR? Hmmmm, I do like my KRZR I just got, though....guess I'll have to see how this pans out.
Why can't we get good phones with out all those useless add-ons! I just want a phone that works, has a descent display, bluetooth and anything beyond that--that is actually useful for a phone is a bonus. I do not need a camera, in fact, I do not want to pay for a stupid camera on my phone. I have never used it other than just to use it, but that was like once. The quality is shit and besides, I have my point and shoot 7MP and my DSLR.
WOW, does NO ONE go to GSM Arena!?!?! Ive known about this phone for a WHILE..... go to GSMarena.com - it's been posted there for about 3 or 4 months now.... honestly engadget, we deserve better.
I *think* the link to the GSM MOTORAZR MAXX in the article proves that they knew about the GSM version of the phone.
It's the CDMA version that they didn't know existed. GSM Arena makes no mention of a CDMA version, either.
Actially, I do live in the US; I just happen to import my phones. Or I could get them in Chinatown, I suppose.
I'll believe this when I hear it from Verizon. Just a few things to note:
-Verizon typically puts the logo on the battery cover on the back of the phone (this is the case with both the RAZR and the KRZR from Verizon).
-Notice the different configuration for the camera/flash from the official Motorola pictures. The flash is on the opposite side and the camera is now centered.
-What happened to the idea of the thin blue bar lights on each side of the cover?
-Is it just me or does the screen look a lot bigger compared to the official Motrola pictures?
Here's a link to take a look for yourself.

Yes, it does look slightly different from the GSM MAXX (larger LCD, chrome hinge and camera lens/flash layout), but that's to be expected. With the V3's looking so much alike (some would say too much), it's only natural for Verizon to want to visually differentiate the CDMA MAXX from its GSM sibling. Likewise, it probably has a slight specification bump by being later to market (which unfortunately hasn't translated into camera megapixels).
I wouldn't say it looks bigger though -- not without a better frame of reference. Doesn't really look much different size-wise from these in-hand photos from MobileBurn...

The phone in that picture looks nothing like the one on the actual Motorola website.
poison in a pretty pill...
Come on, do you really expect us to believe that people use Verizon? That's as bad as saying Sprint. LOL LOL LOL.
What a joke! Motorola is.
I have had a 2mp, gsm phone for 3 years now by Sony Ericsson. It's a K750i.
Maybe some of you sheep here have heard of it?
It's only 2 mega pixels????
That was popular like two years ago.
Now I have a 5 mega pixel Nokia N95.
Motorola Sux, as does Verizon.
2mp?! 5mp?! I just had my 12mp Samsirola phone with Lieca lens imported from Mars. Don't you try to get one. You can't, it's still a prototype. I just know a guy who knows a girl who's a rep, and she got me one to try.
Sincerely,
Kenny
I can confirm that Verizon is coming out with this phone because its in my hand! I test brew applications (eg. VZ Navigator) and have used this phone a lot!
First of all, I am biased against moto.
But moving on, I would love to see this phone come to verizon intact. I have a Nokia 6256i with them, and they didnt cripple it (much) and Proprietary Nokia Diego software fixed that, but we (Verizon customers) need more options for phones. Not that I would buy a crappy motorola product, but it is nice to know that its not just Nokia sticking it to verizon and siding with customers.
Us Americans need to stop getting excited over hand me down phones and demand that our service providers keep up with the rest of the world “chocolate” keep it in the wrapping and ship it back. With cell phones being more readily available then even a sleek camera when out an about why should we not expect 3mp or better? The Razr Maxx is an amazing phone even though I hate Moto’s and it's a year old like the Chocolate.
This phone exists_
The CompUSA where I live has had one available for purchase since at least August for @ $400 or so_
It's labeled in the store as a RAZR V3x_
I have a V3 original version and whipped it out to compare them and the shape and folding method and much more is different from the standard series thru the V3m_
the phone will hit verizon stores soon. it will be 199 dollars. check out http://testman.verizonwireless.com
I bought this and then spent two days before Verizon told me that at this point and "until furthur notice" the phone only works to make calls. None of the other features are working.
I bought it fro Verizon. NONE of the features work except calling, and they have no idea when they will be able to use the network features
