Samsung's ultra-thin 17-inch AMOLED display
These days it seems if it's not thin, Samsung ain't in it. They even brought their skinny ethic to desktop PCs and computer mice yesterday, so it's only natural that they'd follow those up with an incredibly skinny AMOLED desktop display to complete the setup. The active matrix / organic light emitting diode hybrid AMOLED technology has been a Samsung favorite, providing bright, colorful displays in quite thin form factors, since there's no need for a backlight. This new 17-inch display, however, is the largest we've seen by far. At a mere 12mm thick, the display rocks a 1,600 x 1,200 resolution, less than 0.01ms response time, 400 nits of brightness and a 1,000:1 contrast ratio. Of course, it's all conceptual for now, and there's no telling when this kind of display will make it to market, but it sure will be a welcome sight when it does.

Finally a display i could play pong on
OK, couldn't 100,000th of a second response just go one and say instantaneous response?
Another thing: they'd own the market if they can get that in a more reasonable multi-panel setup, maybe "slimmer" bevels on the sides
guys those specs are jawdropping i want it in a 30" version please omg AMOLED FTW! 10 micro seconds??? thats the response time?( 0.01 ms = 10 micro seconds if im not mistaken?) and at 17" with 1600x1200 when average vanilla 17" LCD give 1280x1024 and at only 10 watts incredible hehe scary im sure we will c it first in a MAC who wanna bet??
Finaly some pc display divice to look forward to.
The only thing that has me worried is there i no mention of color depth or accuracy. On one hand no backlight = less distortion. But if they had something amazing i'm sure it would be up there with the rest of the specs.
I predict high end designer/proline models waaaay before it reaches the mac.
I so badly want one of these in 24 inches+ range of size (I just can't go back from 19 inches) widescreen with a resolution of 1920x1200. Go Samsung! Go!
Where's the wiiidddeescreeeeennnn action?
My first thought was along the lines of disciple83... I don't mind how THICK a monitor is.. I just want the thinnest bezel possible or better yet... no bezel at all.
Either the viewing angle is narrow or the contrast ratio isn't as posted. Those blacks aren't even dark grey.
Its probably just in a really bright display hall. Also it could be the flash from a camera. Then again IIRC Samsung has some rather inaccurate contrast ratio numbers.
check carefully on that screen, it is reflecting the ceiling.
I wonder if they finally fixed the problem with the short lived blue OLEDs?
WoW! Gorgeous.
A 17" with 1600x1200 resolution. Finally! I always wondered why they didn't make 19"ers with a higher resolution then 17" screens.
Widescreen or not, I would take two :)
I want! Looks amazing. If only the bevel was virtually non existent.
From what I've seen of OLEDs already (a company at LinuxWorld a few years back was showing them off, Kodak has been using them for a while in their gadgets and Pioneer's 2006 high end DEH-P780 has a full color OLED screen) is that the black truly IS black. Since each pixel is it's own light source (no backlight), to turn black, it emits no light. It's true black. OLEDs are the future of displays from what I've seen. There was another contender but they haven't gotten off their ass and done anything yet... *cough* SED *cough*
Oh, and just think of this screen in a 15 inch widescreen laptop... LCDs are one of the bigger power drains on a laptop, second to the hard drive. This will cut down consumption a LOT (not to mention heat)... this + flash based HDs... oh yes. My 10 hour laptop is a reality. :)
Hold on there, LCDs are the biggest power drain on the laptop period. The hard drive doesnt take nearly as much power as an LCD does.
Why are the blacks so bad (compare the bezel to the onscreen black) .. each pixel is its own light source, they can just turn it off for black.
mp3elv: I'll take that bet, and when you lose (because you will) then you have to learn to spell and stop posting like a 14 year old.
Maybe he is 14,...
Anyone else notice the "Number of Color 262,144"? I hope that's either a mistake or will be fixed in production...
I hope it doesn't suffer from burn-ins. Time to get to love a screensaver again? :)
Better get out those nice shutterglasses too although 8 ms might be sufficient for those.
hey Magus,
the link to the pictures/art state that the color range is 265k..
I cant wait to see these refined a lil and hit the market.. As long as they are priced right, Id snatch one up in a heartbeat..
I think I just jizzed my pants
Sony has already made some damn skinny LCD's. The LCD on my laptop is less than 1/4th of an inch thick. If it were any thinner, it would snap too easily. It's also made of carbon fiber.. in very thin laptop displays, you HAVE to use a very sturdy surface for the backing. If you use plastic, opening the screen up will literally crack it.
I love my new Vaio SZ series, amazing laptop.
Nice tech! My Sony SDM-N80 18.1 is 7/8 inch thick,1600x1200,which I've had for 3 years.
