Ok, so we
did mention that the oh-so-thrilling "100GB" overlay supposedly seen in the mysterious PowerPoint slide at Korea's X06 seemed a bit out of place, and now we're hearing from Microsoft itself that it's probably too good to be true. Correspondence with the console's creator has elicited comments dubbing the announcement "misleading" and "not reflective of an official announcement of any kind," but it curiously failed to give an outright proclamation citing the photo as
burlesquely. Nevertheless, the company claims it has "nothing to announce with regard to a larger hard drive" at this precise moment in time, but it certainly didn't go out of its way to slam this proverbial door shut.
Rolfcopter!!! Bait and switch!!! haha
P-P-P-POWERPOINT!!!!
The door may not be shut, but how much would they charge for 100GB? Their 20 gigs is about one hundred, so...
My guess, $200-300 (although I don't think most people would pay more than $200, if that).
I really don't see the need for a 100 GB HDD in the 360.
Isn't it nice that the PS3 will use a standard HDD that can be swapped at whim without permission of big brother or his price tag?
It will definitely be nice for those that will buy a PS3 basic and then hit up newegg.com for a 100+gig HDD for $50-$75.
One more tick for Sony.
It came to me that 100GB is 5x 20GB, simliar to Microsoft's HD-DVD drive which is "6 times the fun."
I think that Microsoft will come out with a 120GB Hard Drive as part of the 6 times the _____, in this case, 6 times the space, 6 times the fun (6 times the price!)
- Just my $2399.70
ok so its not official as of yet. maybe they didnt want to announce it this way. id say wait till next yrs. 1st big gaming event to come around and theyll prolly officially announce it. and i think if the price is more than the console itself that would be add-on suicide. i look for the price to be around 100$. what the current price of the 20gb hdd is now, and the 20gb one to go on sale for round $30-40.
We're only talking about 100 GB. By the time this comes to fruition in a year or so, we might even have 100 GB flash drives by then.
Seriously, what's the hold-up? Isn't it just an IDE drive encased in a USB connection case. What is so limiting about that, that 100GB is so out of the question?
I thought it was a sata drive.
MS has already announced that you will be able to buy music from the Zune "platform" using MS Points.. which you can purchase using yer 360. How many people wanna bet that MS plans a Zune Blade for the 360 that allows you to buy and download music to yer 100GB HDD, and transfer it to the Zune player (which would explain the blatant lack of WiFi music downloading on the Zune player). Remember, the 360 is supposed to be the hub of a livingroom 'entertainment' system.. 100GB should be just about right for storing music, maybe even DVR'd programs, etc., but 20GB wouldn't cut it for that..
I foresee a significant price drop on the 20GB (say to $50) and the 100GB replacing the current price point, probably at $150ish. Enough to make the 20GB a semi-portable 'personal' drive, and the 100GB the media storage drive.
oh and if not mistaken the hdd MS uses is a lappy hdd..
Yeah,_man1c_ is right, the hdd in the xbox360 is a regular 2.5" drive used in laptops, so is the PS3 one too. Swapping either drive is easy enough if you know what you do...
i remember someone saying that they cracked open the casing and replaced it with a 100gb sata laptop drive. but i want to say i also heard somewhere that this isn't possible for some reason. but idk it was a while ago and i don't care at the moment since my hdd still has a little bit of room.
ok the hdd in the 360 is a laptop hdd, and it is possible to change the 20gb to 100gb all u have to have is a star bit and take it apart and put the new hdd in which i plan on doing that cause if u play the FINAL FANTASY XI game it takes up half of the 14gb thats ur able to use, which sucks for me cause i like to have a good bit of space for extra stuff for games, but 7gb of my hdd is left and i think the 100gb would definatly be establishable for the 360 considering it is suposibly the BIG MAIN MICROSOFT ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM OF ALL TIMES. (still better than ps3,well until the decide to quit making crappy games for it)
With MS offering movies and tv shows for download through xBox Live (I as a Warcraft junkie already have the South Park episode downloaded) a larger Hard Drive is a necessity. Especially if you are downloading all the other games, themes and whatnot.
Question is, can you just "pop" in the 100gb drive and go, or does it need special formatting and programming on the drive?
