If you put things into perspective, being the first Windows Mobile-enabled Treo to be available in Europe is hardly the greatest of accolades. But for those of us who haven't had access to such a device before the 750v's release, it's accompanied by a subtle sigh of relief. Unsurprisingly,
The Unwired's review of the phone focuses primarily on the software aspects of the 750v, with the reviewer finding that Palm's customization of the WinMo 5 interface makes the device more intuitive compared to untweaked phones; a bundled
threaded messaging application sweetens the deal further. The one particularly apparent area which the reviewer didn't specifically mention is the size of the device -- in comparison to the
HTC Excalibur, the 750v appears positively obese. Even more telling is the comparison to the spec superior
HTC Hermes (2 megapixel camera, HSDPA, 2.8 inch QVGA display, WiFi, faster processor, videoconferencing camera, etc.) which appears to share very similar dimensions. In the conclusion the reviewer stated that he would personally buy the 750v had the phone shipped with WiFi capability -- the lack of this key feature coupled with an overweight design and limited specs (including the usual crippled 240x240 resolution) severely dampens the initial positive points. As is far too typical for Palm, the 750v's excellent software implementation doesn't live up to the phone's chunky and dated hardware.
if you're thinking to use the web browser on one of these smart phones, go for one with a larger screen. Web browser is just *barely* useable on the HTC Wizard.
As someone that has a 650 Treo, I am DYING for one of those badass HTC phones... The Hermes or the Trinity, to be specific. Then again I am on sprint and I will have to wait forever. This sucks.
This review had very good points about palm treo 750v. Come on Palm ..who you BS..ing? If HTC DASH and IPAQ can successfully integrate WiFi, no to mention with ON and OFF option in slim body, WHY CAN'T YOUR DESIGNER DO THAT? Give your slave customers an option to add WiFi and see how they react. Stop kidding your prosumer/customer and also please don't come up with a vauge answer about WiFi. If I can't use mini WiFi card with 750v, guess what, you -Palm- will be very pleased to take off my name from your loyal customer list. These days I have plenty of Smart phones to choose from. Should I name I few? HTC Dash, Sony Ericsson p990i, Nokia E61, HP IPAQ6955, Blackberry Pearl, Samsung ..... etc. Palm has good market share in US, but how about world market share? Palm Treo in US reminds me one saying "In the land of blind, one eyed man is the king"
Listen I am a Treo fan but that being said these guys at Palm are seriously f'ing up.
Having a phone whose specs are really like 1.5 generations behind the competition was ok when it was Palm and uh no one else really....well no one really viable that is. But now, come on guys. You cannot rest on your laurels anymore.
People who buy smart phones don't buy them cause they are chic devices...they aren't fashion phones. Hence, the people buying them want tricked out hardware. You may not think HTC phones are threatening your market share but are you really arrogant enough to think that it can't be stolen from you?
Stop with the bullshit product refreshes and give the smartphone buyer the specs they've been wanting. They will pay for it. If they wouldn't, then they'd be buying an LG or another RAZR.
I couldn't agree with JCA more! As an avid fan of Palm smartphones since Tungsten and t600 days, I am really losing my patience of hoping that Palm will get their acts right soon!! Why can't they understand that they cannot hope to win more customers and keep loyal users by simply resting on their laurels -- they cannot continue just to win on the form factor and good look appeal. I admit that the 650 still look more handsome than some other smartphones, and now w/ the antenna finally gone, the 750v looks even more classy and business like. However, do they realise that the Blackberry Pearl is really close and win on technology alone? Still with no wifi and a more powerful camera. These people at palm seem so backward thinking and naive. I ask them to take a look at the nokia n95 and they should be ashamed of themselves! They have the nerve to sell it a premium prices too. Take a look at the Samsung i760 and they should find a place to hide. I will definitely wait and see if Samsung will offer a N Am edition for their i760. It really looks like a perfect smartphone to me, yet it can be so slim and good looking. Though the t650 is a great pda and phone, but it really is outdated, with the 750v not much different! I've been using the Samsung E900, and man can I tell you it's one hell of a good looking and slim device. They have a lot of the latest technologies packed into such a small phone. Only problem is it does not come with a qwerty keyboard, something which I can't do without since the t600. The sad situation Palm is facing today is just like they CAUGHT A DEER, YET DON'T KNOW HOW TO UNDO THE ELK!!
