Intel's
first quad-core processors still aren't even shipping but that hasn't stopped the company from showing off the next chip up its sleeve, unveiling the quad-core Xeon "Tigerton" on Friday. Set to ship in the second half of 2007 and intended for heavy-duty server use, this one sports the Xeon MP 7000 Series designation -- MP standing for multiprocessor, naturally, meaning that you can use more than one of 'em in your setup for some dual or quad quad-core action. Unfortunately, that appears to be all that Intel's letting loose about the processor for the time being, though the company has reaffirmed that the previously announced "Clovertown" quad-core Xeon server processor will be shipping in November, as will the desktop-bound Core 2 Extreme QX6700.
It's GRRRREAT!!!
Any guess how long until we see these in a Mac Pro?
Tigerton... Guess they ran out of ideas
i'm guessing Tigerton is a mix of Tigard and Beaverton which are two major suburbs of Portland near which Intel has a big campus. Most of their chip codenames are named after things in the Portland area.
oturn - ya beat me to it! LOL
I think Intel doing this whole thing all wrong. They need to let the market cool, give the consumer a chance to at least spend money on a processor first, cuz if the average money-minded consumer is like me, or vice-versa I suppose, then we are waiting to see what kind of longevity these new procesors will have, rather than dropping $500+ for a chip that will only last a year or so before it becomes obsolete, (to the point where we think of p3 slot processors now).
I think that intel is moving at a good pace, i would hate for them to go any slower than this.
Clovertown?
Have we turned into 12 year-old girls, ladies and gentlemen?
Tigerton. Hmm... sounds like a Transformer.
That would be Tigertron. He's a quad-core transformer.
Here in spain "Tigerton" is how is called Tony the Tiger, the one form the cereals :P
I can't wait for the Leopardton version to come out.
Tigertron.......Maximize!!!
Beast Wars sure was great!
and apple still hasn't released dual-core laptops.
Actually, Apple already have. Its the Intel Core Duo Macbook and Macbook Pro and the Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro
i spoke to soon.
It will probably be renamed by many as "f*n expensive".
