Sony: BDP-S1 Blu-ray player pushed back due to software glitch
Sony's first standalone Blu-ray player, the BDP-S1 has been pushed back so many times it's not even funny anymore. This time, the company is saying the push back is not due to any blue laser shortage, but "a specific software function that resides in the hardware" as confirmed to Electronic House. No word on what the problem is, but as complex as these next generation players are there's surely a million things that could trip it up. Hopefully it will arrive sometime this year and have totally glitch-free playback of those BD-J interactive titles due for the holiday season. Who are we kidding? Start the countdown to the first firmware update...now.

I wonder if this issue is going to affect PS3 playback.
Im sure they will also add HDMI 1.3 with DTS-HD Dolby TrueHD playback for movies too. Perfect opportunity for them now.
So Samsungs BD player still has glitches and a faulty chip that CAN'T be fixed.Sony's machine is not out yet (remember it's been delayed 4 times) and it's already a flop with even bigger problems glitches and I'M SURE it has that faulty chip... and there are some people out there that think Blu Ray has a change why?????
I don't know why but a part of me is saying that this push back is deliberate on the part of Sony to give their "cheap" PS3 a push off as a blu-ray player... but then the other part of me is saying PS3 won't have substantial availability till probably mid to late 2007 so that can't be the reason.
It's kind of sad to think that the supposed savior for the blu-ray format is launching with 400,000 units for the holiday season.
The turning point in this pointless little war will happen when studios come to their sense and wholeheartedly support hddvd. As it is now blu-ray doesnt make sense as a movie format; 2x the cost for equivalent (or sometimes less) the picture quality of hddvd. For a format that touts itself as having almost 2x the storage capacity and demanding 2x the cost of hddvd, one would think it would be 2x the quality apparently not.
