Nokia 870 surfaces in the wild?
Alright folks, it's a blurry camphone pic, so take this with a grain of salt, but it looks like we've just got our first glimpse of the Nokia 870 in all its shininess. The followup to the 770 (and potential big brother to the 330) supposedly hides a webcam in that little lump to the left, and should have some fancier VoIP functionality, but otherwise it's mainly looking like a facelift so far. A slide-out keyboard? We're not holding our breath.[Via CrunchGear]

Wow that's one old-fashioned looking brick! Nokias just have no style.
blah @ Oct 26th 2006 4:34PM
hehheh...with that cord coming out of it, this REALLY reminds me of that fake video iPod pic...u no the 1

That's the lamest excuse for a Nokia proto I've seen... Looks more like something a proto shop built to showcase their abilities. It probably has a 770 underneath to provide the actual screen.
yakko @ Oct 27th 2006 9:33AM
In response to blah: It is not a fake at all.
To haythem: Faster CPU? I agree. More memory? I agree. 3G? Don't see a purpose in turning into a cellphone.
To Markus: I have seen lamer final products. Digital pen anyone? It does not have a 770 underneath.

Looks decent to me, prop has GPS. I will put this in my Acura on the dash instead of shelling extra money for a navigation system.

I agree w/ Haythem: This thing's gotta have a faster processor.
I bought the 770 & ended up taking it back 2 days later. When the Nokia E70's wifi is faster then something's wrong w/ the device.
The speed issue was unbearable. However, the browser, screen, RSS feed programs were all pretty well thought out.
Zinoff @ Oct 26th 2006 6:37PM
had you configured your swap memory on your 770? it's pretty fast once that is done, in fact l'm posting from one.
Anthony @ Oct 26th 2006 8:00PM
To Zinoff: Hmm. I didn't. I just read on LWN about swapping memory. I felt it was slow even w/ one window open & loading page one (in most cases Yahoo or Engadget).
I'll take another look when the 870 comes out. My wife really likes the idea of a tablet for around the house (especially when I'm clogging up the office while "working").
Leomar @ Oct 26th 2006 7:56PM
Would really consider selling my PSP if it has a keyboard.
El Tiante @ Oct 26th 2006 9:39PM
I'm also posting from my 770. I love the thing and it's pretty snappy for surfing.

If this really is the "870" (or 880 or whatever Nokia will call it), I'll sure wait for the next model and stay happy with the 770 meanwhile.
Not only is it clumsy compared to the elegant 770, it also seems to be bigger than the current model. There's no point having the device if it doesnt fit my pockets.
Given its rounded shape its also very likely Nokia dropped the concept of the screen cover which not only protects the screen, but also provides some sort of power saving when not using the device. I cannot see how this should work with the ugly duckling depicted above.
Michael Flaig @ Oct 27th 2006 6:13AM
If this is the successor of the N770 - I'll stick with the old one.
This one is awefully ugly! The device is bigger than the N770, the Screen fills even less of the device ...
Red_aRRow @ Nov 1st 2006 11:47AM
Does it run on Linux or Symbian?? If it's Linux then it is probably the Maemo platform but if it is Symbian (S60 UI from Nokia) then which one could it be??
Texrat @ Oct 27th 2006 1:56PM
I don't get some of the comments here. The 770 was plenty fast enough, given its mechanics. I've used one for months now and the only real compliant I have has to do with Application Manager being buggy. I think some of you have unrealistic expectations from a little internet tablet (hint: NOT a PC).
Also, there's nothing wrong with the look of the supposed new model in the photo. Sure, it's retro, but when has that ever held a product back? Retro styling has made appliance and auto manufacturers some decent coin in recent years.
I highly doubt a slide-out keyboard, but I'm betting it provides better connection to outboard keyboards based on user desires. I also don't believe it's larger than the 770. Use the screen for comparison and you'll easily see it's very close.
You guys need to relax. It's an internet tablet, not the second coming of Christ.

I did the work deconstructing it: http://thoughtfix.blogspot.com/2006/10/next-generation-tablet-fcc-docs.html

Linux.
