Surely so, this morning we flipped the switch on our Xbox 360 and were able to download the
fall update which, among other things, enables
HD DVD, 1080p support, and Windows Media Connect media sharing. We were obviously unable to test the HD DVD support, but we did snag a few shots of 1080p in action, as well as the new media sharing capabilities. Oh, and we do apologize for the (usual) crappiness of our pics -- LED DLP displays really don't photograph very well.
The update took only a moment to download. Then again, we wouldn't have really expected it to be 80MB or anything.
Aaaand a quick restart.
We dashed straight to the display menu to enable 1080p on our 1080p-capable set. And what the hell, it worked fine -- even though on the menu system we so no discernible difference. (But really, why would we?) Oh, and don't mind those colors, like we said, LED DLPs photograph kinda funny.
See? 1080p, we told ya.
And now onto the video.
Yep, plenty o' places to watch video from. Obviously we were most interested in watching from our Windows Media Connect-enabled computer. And for those eager to start streaming something besides WMV, sorry, the boys behind
Transcode 360 are still only pondering plugging in to WMC and WMP to transcode on the fly to the Xbox over this new method.
Make sure it's running, bud.
Oh, and make sure your Xbox is authorized. Doy.
Ah, ok, there we are. The Crushinator's going to serve us up some media.
It automagically indexes all your shared directories and subdirectories so finding shared media is a cinch. Unfortunately the only WMV video we had readily available was of our man
Dave Zatz unboxing the TiVo Series3.
Hit play and sit back to watch the magic happen.
So this video is upscaled and zoomed from QVGA onto approximately 1350 x 1080. You can imagine how that looked, but that's not really the point. The point is it works simply and as advertised, which is more than we can say for a lot of home streaming media solutions.
Thanks Dave. Enjoy that 1080p.
P.S. -We've heard of at least one person having issues with 1080p to his set. While we didn't have any problems with 1080p whatsoever, what's your experience been like? Let us know in comments (don't forget to tell us what kind of set you're using, and whether it's native or downscaled 1080p).
I've got a Westinghouse LVM-42W2 which supports 1080p over component, vga, dvi, or hdmi connections. This functionality has been tested primarily with a computer, but now with the Xbox 360.
I have my Mac (iTunes & iPhoto) streaming stuff to my 360 with a program called Connect360. Works great even has shoutcasting.
I don't understand, it looks just like the 360 dashboard does now isn't it? Just some new menus.
Yeah, my only comment is going along with CM up there. You really should be able to get a fine picture off your TV. There are multiple ways, depending on a few things, CM gives options. One thing that you may want to look at is the remote, although most of your screen shots are static anyway, if you want to stop anything moving, there MAY be a "still" button on your samsung remote. I have an older Sammy, and I can pause the image and taht helps take great images of the TV.
So, yeah, set your TV to (something like) night portrait (if you only have scene modes on the camera), turn off the flash, put the thing on a tripod and you should get much better shots than those posted.
I'll upgrade later tonight, maybe...not sure what it'll do for me, except when the HDDVD player comes out. I'm not about to waste time transcoding to WMV for the files I have...I may do a few, but it isn't a priority. I just want more of the stupid controllers buttons usable when in some menus, so we can do MORE with the files.
i.e. when in the video folder, you can play with a, go back with b. That's it...let Y be info and x be delete, or in the y-info sub-menu add options to delete.
Same thing with pictures taken from a thumbdrive....let me view them, rename them, etc...more options, still, please...and if these are included, I didn't notice them on the xbox.com list...so, sorry if I'm harping on anything already "fixed"....I think they're not doing it, because it'd be too much like the file browsing in the PS1, PS2 and PSP...where triangle always brings up a sub-menu for deleting, copying, etc...
OK, I'm done....have fun and play lotsa games!!
OK, so it's been updated to allow for playing or deletind and they put some more/better info after clicking "A" on a video...I'll take it!
I tried 1080p over component this morning on my Sony KDL-40XBR2 and apparently it doesn't except 1080 so I guess I'll have to get the VGA cable for 1080p and pipe the audio through my stereo. I would have been nice for them to release a HDMI cable but i guess I'll make due with the VGA, and its cheaper anyway.
My Samsung DLP only accepts a 1080p signal thruogh it's HDMI port. When I tried to switch to 1080p my tv said "No signal"... Ok Microsoft where is the HDMI output kit?
The XBR2 is a great LCD panel but has some shitty crippling features like no 1080p over component or VGA and it fails some cadence tests...
Sony really screwed up a great TV with a horrible processing board.
Perhaps they did this on purpose so only the PS3 would look it's best on their TV?
1080p goes black for me too :( I have Sony KDS-50A2000 through component. Any news about a hdmi cable or adapter?
you need a component input that can bring in 1080p. if yours doesnt like mine then you can only get 720p until they bring out a hdmi cable for the 360.
Is there anything out there like the Videora Xbox360 Converter (http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/Xbox360/) that I can use to batch convert avi to wmv? Videora only converts avi to mpeg2.
I may have to buy me that VGA cable so that I can run 1080p on my Dell 2405.
My point exactly. Do you know what sarcasm is? Technically the 1080p feature on my Xbox360 is useless. I have a 1080p television, with a HDMI input, and my television does not support analog 1080p, digital only. I cannot wait until I get my PS3.
If people are complaining about getting a 1080p television, now people should complain about getting an analog 1080p television (for which a good quality television is hard to find).
1080p works fine on my Dell 2407WFP screen using the VGA cable. I got some black lines on my screen but these can be removed if i change the sharpness in the image settings from 50 to 30. It looks fantastic now.
So um, I purchased a 360 today, hooked it all up, router and all. I turned it on and it asked me to set up a profile so i chose to do the online Live setup.. Next it tells me in order to use Live it must DL an update.. So it dl's and all, 360 reboots and i get a System Error E71.
So i took it back to gamespot and got another one, went through the same process and got the same friggin error. So.. I'm kinda pissed. Any others in the same boat?
All i wana do is play Gears of War :( HELP!
@joe2100
Yes! exactly the same problem here. Got my 360 today, hooked it up, connected to live, locked up, error 71. Now it doesnt get past the boot screen. I called xbox support and they told me that the problem came up today, and that to exchange it and not try and connect to live for a few days until they figure out what the problem is. LAME.
I'm quite disappointed.
That was the worst attempt at sarcasm I've ever seen. Sorry :\
I thought most good TV's support 1080p over Component? Appears you got a dud. :)
Did you know that most high-end televisions do not support 1080p over analog to cut down costs? Having both digital and analog can be expensive, and why would you want to watch HD in a crappy format. Some low-end televisions support analog so they can attract more customers. Microsoft is still in the Stone Age.
My Dell 2405WFP will not show 1080p over components. It just says invalid input and falls back to 1080i.
I'm running my Xbox on a 1440x900 PC monitor, and I really wish I'd gotten the ability to use that resolution - but I'll live. Honestly, I don't really see that much a difference, though I'm glad to see the console is not stagnating and new features are being released.
the only real good thing about this update is that you can now whtch video through computer and other devices. and it doesn't play HD DVD's I tried it.
btw, saw someone asking what the new VGA resolutions supported are - the only new one I see is 1920x1080.
A real big upgrade, but still not a single thing done about the god awful backwards compatibility issue with original Xbox games, which has kept me from grabbing one up so far. I mean come on, Jet Set Radio Future was a pack-in game at one point!
Has anyone noticed that DVD playback is WORSE since the update ? Same connection, But now my dvds look softer and worse .. (Dont ask why i use it for a dvd player) Just wondering if anyone else noticed that or if im crazy
You are correct; the first system update lets you up convert DVDs from 480i to 720p. Now the new update lets you up-convert from 480i to 480p, and down-converts the previous update due to al those anti-piracy acts.
There is a VGA to HDMI adapter, use it to get your 1080p over hdmi from the XBOX, and then shut up about it.
I tried the 1080p on my xbr 60 inch and it doesn't work. Went back to 1080i.
My 46" Sony Bravia XBR3 would not take 1080P through component video (scrambled), however, my brand new Sony STR-DA5200ES receiver does and converts it to HDMI for display on my Bravia. Looks awesome!
The update was quite small! I updated my Nokia N80's firmware the other day - 74MB!
I assume i'm not the only one still playing halo2 on the 360... i've got a question. Here's my scenario: I've got two xbox360s. both downloaded the dashboard update. both encountered the same problem i get with every MS update - the additional maps (available via the multiplayer map-pack disc or via download from xblive) are corrupt and need to be re-installed.
every time there's an update from MS, I get an error that says (something to the effect of) "Content you've downloaded is corrupt and will need to be downloaded again"
Is anyone else seeing this?
I'm using a Dell 2405FPW (widescreen PC monitor, native resolution of 1920x1200) connected to the Xbox360 via VGA cable. There is one new resolution available in the Dashboard: 1920x1080. I then disabled the scaling option on the Dell monitor (set it to 1:1 in the scaling menu). Now I'm getting exactly 1920x1080 displayed pixels on my 1920x1200 display. There are tiny (1/4") letterbox borders at the left and right (due to the 16x10 aspect ratio of the Dell) but DAMN does it look nice now. Admittedly, the signal is not digital (like HDMI) but this is as good as it gets for now on the 360.
It looks like my 42" Westy does support 1080p over component after all :)
I have the Sony KDL-40W2000 which is 1080p capable. With the Xbox 360 conencted via component 1080p does not work. However connected via VGA the screen does accept 1980x1080 after pressing the 'auto adjust' option via the settings on the tv. Does this mean I now have 1080p? I find it difficult to tell other than my dashbord looks a little smoother compared to other resolutions.
az. When I bought my 40W2000 me and a friend tried what seemed like everything to get 1080p from the 360. Are you sure it hit 1080p, we couldn't do it? The 40W2000 manual states that the VGA is 720p max from what I remember too.
