The competition is really heating up in the 30-inch display space. Dell keeps slashing its own
3007WFP prices to ridiculous extremes (we just spotted it for $1,274 on Dell's own site), Apple finally got
its 30-incher under two grand in August, and now
HP is busting out its own aggressively priced option for full pixel assault. We've already spent plenty of time geeking out over the
LP3065's specs, so the real news here is that HP is offering the display for $1,699, and it's already been spotted on PC Mall for $1,629, so there seems to be some flex to that pricetag. HP is estimating a ship date of November 11th, and while there might not be much to differentiate HP's offering from the pack -- though a trio of dual-link DVI-D ports does sound intriguing -- it's good to see someone else in the US break the $2,000 barrier.

What rock have you been hiding under? 30" LCD 2560x1600 has been out for years.
wes @ Nov 8th 2006 2:27AM
so what?
my rock is nice and cozy ;-p
syadasti @ Nov 7th 2006 12:00PM
Not much to differentiate from the others? Did you bother to read the specs from the link to specs post on the site...
"92 percent color gamut"
Its the only 30" with the latest advanced CCFL backlight technology. All other 30" are inferior:
"The LP3065 will have a 8ms response time, a significantly upgraded 92% NTSC color gamut compared to the other two...The LP3065 will sport an enhanced CCFL backlight that has better phosphors, commonly refered to as a Wide Color Gamut CCFL (WCG-CCFL).
VP2290b LOVE IT @ Nov 8th 2006 12:51AM
I replaced my Dell 30" with a Viewsonic VP2290b DG4, which has more than double the resolution. 3840x2400 rocks...no more head movement. IBM T221 is the brother. The 30" was useless as it required too much head movement. 204ppi rocks!

Just a quick question and I understand that this may seem elementary and I'm sure there is a good reason but why can I go get let's say a Vizio 37" LCD for about 700-800 yet these "computer monitors" cost so much more. Heck I could hook a computer up to my 42" though vga and it was 1400. What am I missing here? What is the benefit of the "computer monitor" over a regular LCD?
Vertigo @ Nov 7th 2006 12:18PM
Though your 42 inch Vizio may be bigger in size, these monitors have a much higher resolution, allowing someone to view more documents, not just bigger text.
Sam @ Nov 7th 2006 12:21PM
Bret: The resolutions of the computer monitors are MUCH higher than that of TV lcd's. The HP monitor above displays 2500x1600. TV monitors won't even approach that.

The reason is resolution. The LCDs designed as TVs are usually 720p, which is 1280 x 720 pixels, or a little under 1 mega-pixel. Even the fancy 1080p monitors are 1920 x 1080, which is about 2 mega-pixels. The Apple/Dell/HP 30" computer monitor is 2560 x 1600, or 4 mega-pixels, so it has one to four times the resolution of the TV-type monitors.
If your eyesight is bad, or you're just watching movies, it doesn't make a difference. If you're doing programming or graphic design, there's no comparison.

"has one to four times the resolution of the TV-type monitors."
Sorry- that should be "two to four"

I know nothing about monitors or TVs.... but would I be able to use a wii or watch TV straight away on this....
if not, does anyone suggest a nice(cheap... but not too cheap) monitor/tv that can do just that... be a monitor and TV???
thanks

Next year in 2007 Jan the 42" will come out. At that size, I might as well re-arrange my workstation or just mount it on the wall.
johnny hates waiting @ Nov 7th 2006 2:24PM
Funny look at the HP link. It lists it as having a native resolution of
1280 x 1024! That would be waste. I could understand some previous comments. I use my Westinghouse 42" monitor that does 1920x1080 resolution with dvi. You can get those for under $1500. Only problem is it is TOO big. When you get above 30" they are going to have to start looking at curving those things!
iquitoss @ Nov 7th 2006 2:49PM
Yes a great monitor, I'm dreaming about this monitor but the curving point is probably the next big issue they will have to deal with if they want us to buy 108" monitor ;-)
iquitoss @ Nov 7th 2006 2:39PM
Currently you can purchase a Westinghouse 47" TRUE 1080p (1920 x 1080) Flat-Panel LCD HD Monitor(Model: LVM-47W1 ) for 1999$ and the 42" is a bit less expensive. These monitor are the best money can buy, try to get the same quality from Sony at this price, impossible for the moment.
disciple83 @ Nov 7th 2006 4:15PM
In all honesty, for me, I would be using this thing to play video games on, maybe some design work in Photoshop, and definitely some movie action. The resolution is fine for me no matter what it is...Lower resolution means I can back away from the desk with a bluetooth keyboard/mouse.. But the current spec sheet is a typo, the specs were already released as engadget posted a little while ago at 2560x1600.
Even still, When they first announced this monitor I had the same reactions then as I am having now: I welcome HP back to the big boy computer market. Regardless of where they peddled their gear the last few years, (ermm...walmart), it was always pretty high quality, and their printers are top notch, (second only to Epson professional series). On top of that, it's because of HP's announcement of this monitor that Dell had to come off its high end price for this size screen. Apple, along with its target consumer will continue to have its head up its ass to pay such a massive premium for something that is almost identical in performance retailing between $300 and $450 less.
Thank you, HP, with arms wide open.
James @ Nov 7th 2006 7:29PM
My Dell 30 Inch arrived today... got it for the $1274 mentioned in the post.
It replaced my Samsung 21 Inch... and its pretty sweet.
Of course I had to buy a dual-link DVI video card also... so that cost me another $300 for a ATI X1950 Pro.
ozi @ Nov 9th 2006 9:39PM
even at that price, it better be an iso class 1 display with a 5 year no questions aksed warranty.
Crystal @ Nov 21st 2006 2:26PM
I curently have a Dell 30" monitor. I am having trouble with the resolution. I only can set the resolution to 2560x1600 or 1280x800 otherwise I get a black screen or a out of proportion display view. I currently am using a ATI FireGL V500 video card. I just put an order in to HP for this LP3065 30" monitor hoping they have resolved the situation. What's your take?
