Samsung's SPH-P9000 Deluxe MITs: Windows XP at 75 MPH
Ultra-portable XP devices have been getting a whole lot of interesting lately. Now Samsung just upped the ante with this -- the SPH-P9000 Deluxe MITs -- at the Mobile WiMax Summit 2006 in South Korea. Measuring in at chubby 143 × 94.3 × 29.75-mm / 580-g (5.6 × 3.7 × 1.17-inches / 1.28-pounds) when folded, this Windows XP device unfolds (dare we say) origami-like to reveal a 1GHz Transmeta CPU and both Mobile WiMAX (AKA, WiBro which is already launched in Korea) and EV-DO for data connectivity. No WiFi apparently, this all about Mobile WiMAX kids, with Internet speeds of 2-3 Mbps even when travelling up 120-KPH (75-MPH). The SPH-P9000 packs a 5-inch 854x480 (WVGA) LCD, 30GB disk, 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, and apparently ships with both an internal 2980mAh and 7200mAh external extended-battery. People who have played with a prototype on display at the show complained about the screen being too small (in DMB-cellphone crazed Korea!?) and of excessive heating. Well, they can at least work on the latter before the scheduled Korean launch in the first half of 2007. No pricing yet but we've got plenty more pics after the break.

Awesome design concept. Beef the processor and up the screen res and I'm there.

Nice product but I think I'll keep my Sony UX180P at the moment. If I need
a bigger keyboard I just add a bluetooth one. Looks like one of the
girls has got dirty finger nails though!

Sexy. I would buy it if it has WLAN and Edge and an SSD version wouldn't hurt either.
Meatcar @ Nov 7th 2006 9:04AM
they're right. The screen is too small.. I think I will just stick to my exploding Dell laptop for a while...
Den @ Nov 7th 2006 9:05AM
Oh, and those fingernails arent dirty.. Its the new style with the kids now-a-days...

SPH? as in, samsung PCS handset? as in, the US version will be for sprint?
I will cry tears of joy when samsung sends a batch of p9000s over to america. and then, in all my samsung fanboyness, I will walk around using this to go on myspace, while bragging about it on my SPH-M610.
...especially if they make a linux OS that can support the EVDO and WiMAX functions.

The device sounds nifty, but the KB is hideous IMHO....and I loves me some keyboards on my ultra portables.
That design looks flimsy enough that I think I'd prefer one of these...

...in Bluetooth over the current design.

...so when do we get to see this thing battle a deceptikon?
cm.marshall @ Nov 7th 2006 11:28AM
But is it usable in tablet/slate mode?

When are companies going to realize that a 1ghz Transmeta cpu isn't fast enough to run Windows Xp?
This just like the OQO has a cool form factor but the processor just inst up to snuff.
Mauselous @ Nov 7th 2006 5:28PM
I think 'too small' means "I cannot play Starcraft on this." or possibly, "People cannot watch me play Starcraft on this."
hiteckie @ Nov 11th 2006 10:46AM
gregr, you are out of touch. The OQO runs a 1 ghz Cursoe, Transmetas old tech. Transmetas newer processor the Efficeon, is powerful enough to run multiple applications at once and full fledged windows xp and I might add it's the only processor that can in a small form factor without overheating.
Sirocco @ Nov 10th 2006 5:48PM
Where can you take this that you couldn't take an ultramobile 10-inch screen laptop? It seems that in terms of ultramobility, a 10-inch screen is about as small as you can get while remaining practical. At the point where something becomes "pocketable", it often becomes cute but useless.

O m g! i found a new girlfriend, this thing kicks asfault, and is way better then my slvr
Primaz @ Nov 15th 2006 5:26PM
I think this is a great device and much more useful than any of the current umpc's. The problem has always been a lack of a pocket size computer with a touch type keyboard. Nobody wants a thumb input and using an add on foldable etc. type keyboard is bulky and not very functional as they are large and it eliminates many mobile use unless you are at a desk.
If they fix the heating issues I would buy one now. It would be better to have wifi built in but maybe it could be added via a card slot?
waleed @ Dec 17th 2006 7:11AM
the only problem i have with this device is the camera, only 1.3 mp.
either you improve it to at least 2.2 or remove it from the device
Doug @ Dec 21st 2006 6:22PM
This is a fantastic device! Finally a real touch type keyboard. I hate all the devices with either thumb keys or solely pen input. This device clearly beats the Sony with is portability and improved keyboard and OQO due to the lack of a keyboard.

Does anyone know who sells this gizmo in the US?
samantha @ Jan 23rd 2008 7:34PM
this is nice but how much is it. It would be good for kids for school.
