Samsung's 1GB S-SIMTM: your GSM SIM and 1GB storage, combined
So you picked up your GSM-variety LG KG800 Chocolate phone to find it not only missing the 850 band, but it also suffers from a paltry 128MB of on-board memory (without any type of expansion) making the whole media aspect of the phone relatively pointless. Well check it tri-bander, 'cause Samsung is ready to boost your storage via the ol' SIM slot by coupling 1GB of NAND flash with a traditional SIM without upping the size of the card. Yes, that makes the 1GB S-SIMTM card yet another "world's biggest" for Samsung. No word on when these 1GB S-SIM (as they are generically dubbed) cards will be available or who might actually carry them. All we know is they they're on display right now at the Cartes 2006 show in Paris.

i knew this was coming.

I assume that this will only work in a phone that supports it, correct?
Nick @ Nov 9th 2006 10:06AM
Correct - as current software on phones sees nothing more than Contacts and the usual 20limit of text messages on the SIM.
It will take a large change in the phone's software in order for these new SIMs to be used as storage... so I wouldn't expect to see it in current phones, only new one being released over time.
Nice idea tho, shame HTC/Orange had it first.

this is awesome.. f**ing brilliant... but aren't we going to have to wait for phone support... I mean how many phone gui's let you save anything other than contacts to sim?
I guess this is just targeted at the people with *REALLY* big address books. :D

I must agree that this is fricking cool, Although it is not available now since there aren't any phone that I know of that can support this, the fact that is out there, we can see it coming.
Imagine, the ability to save more than your contacts. Now save your sms, email, pictures and music files, and swap it between phones?
Now that is cool.

It can't be that hard to release firmware updates for popular phones.
And you can buy SIM copiers - a place near me does it for around 5. Just push your old SIM data onto the Samsung one.

It looks longer than a regular SIM card to me. Unless it's not as wide, which wouldnt make any sense. Maybe the photo is just stretched.
In Europe we've had SIM cards that can store more than the regular for years, that is 2-3 times as much as a regular SIM. Obviously not even near 1 GB, but still significantly larger than a regular SIM and doesnt require a special phone to use.
