Linksys has a new one in the oven, the WRT600N. The "DualBand"
802.11n router covers 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies simultaneously to fight interference, and claims 802.11g pwnage of the 12x variety. The router also sports the usual 4 port Ethernet hub, along with a fancy USB port that allows you to hook up a hard drive or thumbdrive and have it automatically transmogrified into NAS storage. No word on price, but Linksys should be getting official on this thing at CES 2007 in January. Keep reading for a couple more angles.

The USB Storage Link doesn't work. Upon a file copy it changes all file creation/modified dates to whatever date you copy the file. It loses it's connectivity to network computers, even though the drive becomes a mapped network drive. Backup programs won't work...they stop after a few GB of transfer. The drive is apparently controlled by Linux drivers that may not be compatible with Windows OS, or Mac for that matter. Beware.

Hello Guys,
i have recently bought 'Linksys WRT600N' wireless router which has a storage USB link. i need to buy an external storage, would you able to suggest me one. should i go for a regular external storage hard drive and hook it to the USB or should i go for a NAS drive and hook it to the the ethernet port.
read/write speed is my priority and my budget for the external drive std. /NSA is around $250 - $300
Please suggest me guys....
Thanks,
Amit

Just noting my problems with linksys WRT600N router. I have two of them. The power adapter lasted three days on the first one. The second lasted 4 1/2 months. It is a 120v/12v 2amp adapter. The build dates are 3/08. This seems to be an adapter no one makes except for linksys. Either less than 2amp or more than 2 amp. I thought of trying a 2.5 amp so maybe it would hold up better. I can't find any blogs on this problem or any fixes. I am still WAITING after jumping through many hoops to get linksys to sell me new ones because they DON'T warranty anything you buy on ebay even if it's sealed NIB. They say someone could have taken it apart and damaged it. Nice way to not stand behind a product.Like no one ever got bad products from a physical store. Luckily I have a G band back up router I use. So my warning is to be careful about relying on this router only. The fiasco of telephone calls to linksys once you get through to someone that knows anything and speaks english cleary enough is ended with taking your phone number and the sales department will call whenever they are not OVERLOADED to take your order on a secure line. Imagine that, their main lines are not secure. I hope this is useful to some else.

Nice just what i need for my external Hard Drive...now i wish they would just get a finalized 802.11n standard so i know it will work with the new computer i get with it
TS @ Nov 9th 2006 3:22PM
mmm...daddy like the insta-NAS capability. When they do finally finalize 802.11n, I'll be in media streaming heaven. :)
Keaton @ Nov 9th 2006 8:20PM
Insta-NAS!!! yes!!! You should copy write that phrase!!! Its the bomb!!!

Since this utilize the 5Ghz spectrum, I assume you would have to buy specific compatible client cards from the Linksys in order to take advantage of this benefit from the router since existing cards are not capable of utilizing this spectrum.
Also, what is "pwnage"? Did you just make this up to make the likes of me feel antiquated?

/\ LOL!

Another one to go vertical with antennas on the side. Why can't they keep things a little bit traditional? So it fits nice & tight on that stack of switches? (which they've already shrunk some of too)
Lee Gibson @ Nov 9th 2006 4:50PM
Traditional? Yeah, because that's the first thing I look for when I shop for electronics...how "traditional" it is...
esch @ Nov 9th 2006 5:15PM
I don't see anything that'd prevent you from stacking it, since the antennas are on the side and not on the broad face (on which you'd normally stack stuff).
thunderleg @ Nov 11th 2006 1:14AM
Any torrent clients on this thing?
NNTPgrip @ Nov 9th 2006 4:00PM
Jeff C. - you just need to logon to a different set of tubes on these here internets to get the pwnage remark.

sold!

Frankly, all the lynksys hardware that I've used has stunk. My wireless network hates me, I'm convinced.
fd @ Nov 10th 2006 8:04AM
I think if you use a certain brand of hardware, you can expect some continuation.
We actually have 5 linksys boxes.
3 of them stack horizontal, 1 is vertical only, 1 is too small to stack and can't stand on its side.
3 of them match in style (blue/black), one is silver, one is black.
If we got one other one that doesn't stack, then we have to redo our stuff, as their shelf is out of space :)
This one looks like it would be the traditional footprint though and would replace the router anyhow.
Recently we have been less and less impressed with linksys. We had to swap routers twice and had a range expander which was unbelievably retarded to setup. None of the 3 documented methods worked! First time ever I had to call Linksys.

i think i finally found my next router... very nice with the NAS functionality.
One question. I had to upgrade my cordless phones in my house to a 5.8ghz model because i was getting interference from my wireless network... seeing that this one works on both bands, am i going to have this problem again?
anonymous @ Nov 10th 2006 11:58AM
well, linksys is owned by cisco and cisco never makes anything easy...
drzeller @ Nov 10th 2006 2:40PM
For those that were happy with the NAS part - you can get the same device now, without the dual band portion, in teh WRT-350N. It's been in stores for a few weeks now.

StuBee @ Nov 13th 2006 2:02PM
Which store is the WRT350N available?
Can't find it online available anywhere.
Bill Steiner @ Nov 14th 2006 2:11PM
I have a WRTSL54GS that has the USB port that allows you to hook up a hard drive or thumbdrive and have it automatically transmogrified into NAS storage. The only problem is does not function as advertised. It hangs on large file transfers forcing you to reboot the device. Linksys tech support continues to say that this problem does not exist. Beware....
David Henry @ Dec 21st 2006 4:30PM
This is cool, but they have gone one better. Sprint and Linksys will be demonstrating a new unit that has a Sprint Edge wireless modem for broadband connectivity. More importantly they will be on the monorail. Check out http://onerail.blogspot.com for details.

Actually many wifi cards are dual band...I only know of Intel cards offhand but the 3945 is dualband (a5/b/g) and the 4965 is dual band as well (a5/b/g/n2.4+5) If you have a centrino platform, you have one of these cards (unless it is a very early Centrino platform), If you have Centrino with N support - you are definitely dualband
