We love the Dash and all, but if you're Stateside and have been waiting for a formidable Q competitor complete with 3G, you've probably had your eye on the
i607 BlackJack. It's a little chunky, a little clunky, and the keys and keyboard are not exactly our favorite (think: i320 meets Q), but it's the only GSM phone on the block with EDGE / UMTS / HSDPA. Other notable features include a QVGA display, new
Cingular Music support (as well as Cingular Video), Bluetooth 2.0, and a 1.3 megapixel camera. Like its other holiday 2006 QWERTY smartphone competitors (see:
Treo 680,
Dash,
Q), it too will be priced at $200 with a two year contract (and unlimited data plan). And hey, lucky you, both Phone Scoop and LAPTOP have reviews of the device, both of which seem pretty positive about Cingular's latest (even despite that sad lack of WiFi).

Here we go again with announcements that never materialize (Palm 680).
Or, why don't these companies take a page out of Apple's book and announce products within 12 years of them actually being available?
I said FU to Palm and their 680 because I couldn't wait the 12 years it's been since they announced it. I got a Q instead due to their stupidity and inability to keep a lid on new product announcements.
Customers can only keep ogling at a COMING SOON page for so long before they move on...
JL @ Nov 13th 2006 12:57PM
Um - I was just at Cingular's website and saw the press release for the Blackjack. I definitely get the impression that this isn't a "coming soon" device.
Here's the link if you want to see what Cingy is saying about it.

No wifi tho.. damn..

"but it's the only GSM phone on the block with EDGE / UMTS / HSDPA"
Uh, no it isn't.
Steve Philpot @ Nov 15th 2006 6:33AM
You obviously can't read very well. Did you miss where it said "Coming mid-November"? Also what's with them calling this phone chunky? Lastly, why does everyone gripe about no wi-fi. I have a laptop to utilize wi-fi, why do I need to search the internet on a small a$$ screen. I'm ready to buy this phone now!!!
shaun @ Jan 15th 2007 3:59PM
I have the blackjack and it does have WiFi. Do your research.

"but it's the only GSM phone on the block with EDGE / UMTS / HSDPA"
Who makes this stuff up anyway?
I would suggest researching these things first.
Think "HTC TyTN" for starters.....
Matt T. @ Nov 13th 2006 1:37PM
If we don't see the Treo 750 for a while, I may get.
Any idea or regular price with 2 year contract?
Kyle @ Nov 13th 2006 1:24PM
You dont have to even think tytn, Cingular sells 3 other GSM phones with EDGE/UMTS/HSDPA, thinks Samsung Zx20/A707 and Lg Cu500. Maybe first GSM SMARTPHONE with all the above.

I'll stick with my Dash. WiFi or bust, besides there's nothing that makes me want the Blackjack over my Dash anyways.
Keith Sheehan @ Nov 13th 2006 4:00PM
Are there any devices like this one or the Q that have Wi-Fi and work with Cingular's network?
PPC @ Nov 13th 2006 4:31PM
What's with all these nice GSM phones coming out? I think I will be leaving Sprint for Cingular at the end of my contract. I just can't stand looking at all these GSM phones and not being able to use them on my network...
marcb @ Nov 16th 2006 11:27AM
It's very real. Just saw the actual device at a Cingular store in Manhattn - very slick, great screen, fast internet access and feels more solid than my 700w. Wish it had Pocket PC instead of Mobile 5.
Unfortunately Cingular is rationing them for new accounts only and can't tell me when they'll have more.
R @ Nov 17th 2006 4:10PM
Ye of little faith...
Its real I bought one last night in a store in Corvallis, Oregon. So far I like it.
Cozy @ Nov 18th 2006 3:15PM
Does anyone know if these devices will allow a user to connect to the intenet via the phone?
In other words, can you attach your PC to the phone through a cable or bluetooth and surf the web from the PC?
Please advise.
Thanks!
Stella Gifford @ Nov 20th 2006 2:40PM
Just bought this phone tonight and I love it except the fact that I have to pay more money to Cingular now (including an $18 activation fee) for my plan. Not super bad but I've battled Cingular with their billing and customer service before which has been hell.
The only fault I've found so far with the actual device is that the buttons are very close together and when I'm going through the menu I accidentally hit the "end" button which takes me to the homescreen - very annoying. I just have to learn to be more careful with the buttons I guess. Also it's very hard to find the numbers on the QWERTY keyboard (thank god I never type in new numbers though - I only use what's in my contact list). I can imagine writing and email on this thing would be a bit of a challenge, but all in all I'm happy (so far) and don't think I'll be returning it.
Oh, you can connect to the internet through your phone on your laptop through Bluetooth, as with all other bluetooth enbaled phones. Havent tried this yet but it woked with my ROKR fine.

marcus @ Nov 22nd 2006 4:58PM
Yes Cozy, it comes with "modem drivers" you setup a regular old dial-up connection in windows, and i think you dial *90 (can't remember right now)
marcus @ Nov 22nd 2006 5:28PM
Also,
Has anyone figured out keyboard shortcuts on this thing for email?
1. Jump to first email
2. when sorted by sender jump to first sent begining with m by typing m doesn't work
3. stop the scroller from scrolling through from top of list to bottom of list
4. unlock the screen without clicking 3 buttons, power-unlock-*
I have been flying through phones recently, evaluating them for use at our business. This is the best Windows Mobile phone I have seen so far but those 4 points are annoying. So far (I hate to say it) blackberry 8700 is my favorite, though the lack of a camera is a big downside.
PS. TREO SUX!!!!
chris @ Nov 24th 2006 7:09PM
does any one know how to get blackberry connect to work on this device? I just bought this phone, and have tried to get it to work using a blackberry connect for windows mobile. My company only supports blackberry, using Blackberry Enterprise Server, and the phone is useless to me without my corporate email and calendar. Naturally IT won't support it. Thanks

This stupid phone does not allow you to copy sim card contacts to the phone memory... you have to do it one by one... I have 250 contacts in my SIM, they want me waste 3 hours transfering my contacts... thats just ridiculous... this phone also doesnt connect to your computer with bluetooth.. the microsoft Active Sync is as buggy as its cousin the WINDOWS OS.
