We were a bit skeptical when we first heard of the possibility of a "premium
Wii" with DVD playback
coming to Japan next year -- why would Nintendo announce such a console now and risk cannibalizing their sales? Well, Nintendo, who just confirmed just such a console for both Japan and North America in 2007, is spinning it exactly so: "If DVD movie playback is so important, people can wait for the later model next year. For most consumers it'll be about the games, so they'll likely not want to wait to purchase the new system." That way nobody is bitter about a
3x sexy console mere months after the original... not like that ever happens. As much as we'd love to gripe about the current absence of this fairly common-sensical feature, and though we still can't figure out why Nintendo didn't at least figure this out as a firmware-update (they're still citing cost concerns for the current exclusion), we can't really see this standing in the way of most Nintendo fanboys and their unabated Wii lust. We suppose we'll find out soon enough.
I have a DVD player for DVDs. I have a Wii for Wii games. I don't take them both at once.
Seriously, any home theater system shouldn't be relying on Wii for DVDs considering it doesn't have HDMI or anything. Not that they should rely on a PS3.
What ever happened to these companies (Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, ect)? I miss the days when they would release only one version for all to play on with all the features enabled. PS2 came with DVD standard, there never was such a thing as SNES Basic and SNES premeium or PS1 Ultra Edition with DVD playback or XBOX 1 with the ability to network as an option. I am getting tired of this and just come out with a darn console that is one size fits all (meaning all features).
Oh, this totally kills my interest. I mean, it's not like I've had 10 years to buy a DVD player...
Who cares. DVD players are cheap, I'm personally relieved that I don't have yet ANOTHER device that plays DVD. I've got my computer, my laptop, my dedicated player, and my PS2...I think I've got DVD watching covered.
It would be nice if it played DVDs but I don't really care, I just want to be able to play it on the 19th which I will be. But you guys know it is running Linux so I'm sure it won't be long before someone makes a program to take advantage of the laser already in place and plays DVDs. Besides Nintendo always makes it really easy to write programs for their councils so I wouldn't get too worried.
this is why we love nintendo, there honest to there customers. not like sony where they make up bullshit excuses. Nintendo trusts us and tell this stuff to us straight. Sony hides it, sells as many as they can and then when sales start to steady bring out an upgrade and hope for the sales to go up again
dvd pics all price.
I think that Alex Padill IS SOOOO RIGHT.
that is exactly what i was thinking.
what about putting a divx player in it insted dvds just lame only room for 1 movie
Nintendo has a chance to do something revolutionary. They could let users browse their Wii shop and purchase all the regions they want to use, legally and respectfully. Region 1 and 2 I guess will be the block busters. It shouldn't require a new model, just software.
i have modchip.. i am sure some homebrew to play dvd will come soon
i was actually shocked to discover that the wii didnt play dvd's
and i was even more shocked to discover that they actually have to PAY for using a file format.
what would people say if MS took 10$ license on each program to read .doc files
i hope you can update the software on my current wii so you can play dvds
