PS3 not playing hit PS2 titles; fix on the way
A report by Bloomberg has it that Sony's Japan unit is fessing up to problems with the PlayStation 3's backwards compatibility for certain PlayStation 2 titles, such as Gran Tourismo and Final Fantasy. Apparently menus don't show correctly and games are freezing. Fortunately, however, a software fix is also supposedly in the works to squish these heinous bugs. We haven't ourselves extensively tested the backwards compatibility yet, but we'll be sure to try and dig up some choice titles when we dig in; anyone with a gray market PS3 or Japanese console in the house that can attest?[Thanks, azesino]

Hopefully they go about it better than Microsoft.

I hate the fact no controller ports hopefully an add on will come soon because my SG controller for guitar hero will be useless
Zac @ Nov 14th 2006 3:39AM
Which Final Fantasy?
The slim PS2 didn't have complete backwards compatibility.. including one of the Final Fantasys from the PS1 days (I forget which one). Perhaps these are just incompatibilities that haven't been addressed since the slim PS2 came out?

Ryan, I know you have some great popular PS2 titles around, right? You should do a little testing yourself and hook us up with the infos :D

laser @ Nov 14th 2006 7:39AM
u xbox boys have alot to be happy with gears of war is better than any ps3 game
NT_Bao @ Nov 14th 2006 7:48AM
Happy about the graphics .. yeah. Gameplay? I'll see. I'm not an xbox fanboy, just hate the fact that Sony took their time releasing their console for the price for .. what, 600USD? (premium price)
steven @ Nov 14th 2006 8:19AM
Ha ha,and yes gears of war is all that and better than any of the ps games, and the new ones coming out. I know its hard to swallow that, but lets face it truth hurts
Andir3.0 @ Nov 14th 2006 8:52AM
Actually, I know a couple people who were not impressed by Gears and they've been trying to sell me on the 360 for a year now :p
PreGHz @ Nov 14th 2006 8:54AM
Steven:
A second gen game on the 360 is on equal footing with a first gen PS3 game. Resistance was only .3 points behind Gears on IGN. They gave Resistance: Fall of Man a 9.1.
Better? Sure. By much? Hardly.
Don't be arrogant if you have no right.
Long @ Nov 18th 2006 9:58PM
I think Gears of Wars was great, but it was too short and the multiplayer mode was not as good as other games. I don't like the fact that they do rounds of 4 vs 4. You are just sitting there doing nothing if you die. Also most of the time you are sitting and waiting for someone to come and ambush them.
Master3dfx @ Nov 14th 2006 8:39AM
Do what I did, buy both systems. Now you can play MGS and Gears of War!
steven @ Nov 14th 2006 3:32PM
Resistance is just another first person shooter.
daaper @ Nov 14th 2006 9:04AM
Gears of War was fun and all, but it wouldn't sell me on a systems...it took me all of 10 hours to be the damn thing (on the medium difficulty setting). Also, there is a paltry weapon selection.
Back to the point, though. Who buys a next-gen system to play old games?
Tony C @ Nov 14th 2006 11:27AM
Say hello to those of us that own PS2's and are looking forward to upgrading to the PS3 and still be able to play the games we already have. At least the favorites anyway -- and anything good for the PS2 (that doesn't have a PS3 version) that comes out in the meantime.
Jason @ Nov 14th 2006 9:09AM
I just read in EGM that MGS is not PS3 exclusive anymore. At least that's the rumor. Also, a reviewer's opinion means nothing. I've played some really boring games going off reviews.
GOW sure does look pretty, but it's not my kind of game. I don't care how killer it is. Take THAT next gen systems. :P
soopergooman @ Nov 14th 2006 9:18AM
can someone PLEASE check to see in Socom US Navy Seal: Combined Assault works. I Plan on getting a PS3 this Friday and it would be nice to know if it werks or not.
TIA

IT HAS BEGUN. Sony is going to eat shit hard this holiday season, not that I have a problem with them... but clearly this release was forced and shoddy products will not be tolerated! First the firmware updates, then the units will stop working, i see this as xbox360 launch times 10.
jediqr7p @ Nov 14th 2006 7:29PM
Reports are that FFXI doesn't work since there's discrepancies with the hard drive storage and the game saves etc.
As for a previous poster who mentioned screwed up FF BC in the past, it was FFV. The text in the menus was all garbled, and sometimes you'd have to go back in and out 5x before it would come up correct. Unless you memorized the save combo of course.

My switchable modded XBOX v1.0 is the best.
xbox media center works; plays xvids and divx off my computer as well as flawlessly streams music and pics.
it plays all the games.
Halo 2 is still the best game ever.
Earl @ Nov 14th 2006 10:14AM
Me too!!
Who needs a 360 or PS3, when you can mod an XBox for the same features? Oh and best part about this: alot of games are still released on XBox. I don't care much for graphics if the game is FUN (Splinter Cell Double Agent anyone?)
andy @ Nov 14th 2006 9:55AM
Point being that I'm waiting until it's all settled or someone comes out with something that I MUST have. I have not seen that yet.
HD dowloads are close, but my TIVO records them for me quicker than it would download and cheaper (free).
I just haven't seen a reason to buy either box yet.
Until the HDDVD/BRD prices fall to about 15 bucks/title, I'm not worried about a high def player either.
When someone gives me something that will properly download video and stream from my pc, play high def movies and has a killer app, I'm not buying ANYTHING.
mespinosam @ Nov 14th 2006 10:47AM
How about winning eleven? will it be available for the 360 and the ps3 ???
Bennett @ Nov 14th 2006 11:26AM
Umm...wouldn't that be "Gran Turismo" instead of "Gran Tourismo"?
PoS3 @ Nov 14th 2006 4:38PM
How could anyone have expected the PS3's backward compatibility to work when the slim PS2 didn't even play all PS2 games?
wesley @ Nov 9th 2007 2:45AM
i have a question. i have a japanese ps3 and it doesn't play any american movies or ps2/ps games do to the region restriction and i was wondering did they ever get around to fixing that bug?
