4GB iriver clix announced for $200
Well lookie here; you could go get yourself an AIDS-fighting nano, sure, but it's still just a red nano. Or you could snag something with about as much flash memory, but a huge dose of panache. Looks like iriver's finally ready to launch their 4GB clix (or so their site would have us believe), and at the totally doable price of two hundred clams. Unfortunately, you can't actually transact the purchase just yet (we think they might have jumped the gun posting the page), but it's around the corner people, we're serious.

I've actually used a clix before, its so cool but the small capacity is a big turn off. =/
If they get get an 8gb model in 2007, I'd definitely consider getting it.
Heaps good value
these things are so fun that browsing through the menu excites me...
This is great news. I love my 512MB U10 (only use it for podcasts... like the engagdet one that's it's missing :P) but my co-workers REALLY like it and this 4GB version will really appeal to them.

I've had a 2 gb Clix for about 3 Months now and absolutely love it. It's very easy to control in the palm of you hand in the car. The backgrounds are customizable. The sound quality is great. Battery life at up to 50 hours is kick ass. Works great with Urge. I could go on and on...
The 4Gb is allready for sale according to this website:

ok, if it weren't for the small capacity of this honey, this would be the DAP to have. Period.
i-what?
Forget my last mail, they will recieve the 4Gb somewhere in December....
I want! I want! I want!
Love the ogg vorbis support and all but no USB Mass Storage and Windows only. Jeez UMS has been a standard since the stone ages, why isn't it here? Must be nice to be able to toss aside 5% of your potential market :)
Someday somebody's going to come out with a flash player with 4GB+, ogg support and UMS. Until then I'm stuck listening to my laptop. Come on Cowon, some of us are waiting on you!
No USB mass storage?
Dammit.
At mistic river you can already pre-order.
I've tried to use the Clix when I see it on demo at BestBuy, but I just don't know how. None of the buttons work, and even if they did, it doesn't seem like there's enough of them. How do you do stuff with it? Are portions of it contact-sensative? I really don't get it.
If only I hadn't bought a Mac for college . . . ah, well, there's always dual-boot.
I really like these and might even choose this over an 80GB iPod (my current 60GB broke) - the size and coolness factor are pretty awesome. And the video on these look really good for a display this small.
The clix previously didn't have a ac wall adapter that worked, so the people at bestbuy couldn't charge the player and this it didn't work. The 4 sides of the player are tactile and a slight press of any allows you to navigate or do whatever.
Jeff - the screen clicks in 4 directions, and the display shows you what each direction will do (context sensitive), it's actually really intuitive.
Already preordered mine last week.

For as bulky as it is, I would expect much more capacity. I guess the big screen is nice, but this is more of a full iPod competitor than the iPod Nano which is so small...
That thing looks like a friggin' bud box. Can't these guys pry open their wallets and hire an industrial designer?
From what I remember reading, the lead designer for the clix came straight from the original ipod design team.
Is this compatible with Macs?
Buyer beware: I tried the 2GB Clix for a few days last month and while I was impressed with the beautiful screen, intuitive interface and great sound I had *major problems* transferring and listening to music from Rhapsody:
- the playlists on the Clix would often not sync with the playlists I had selected for transfer in Rhapsody. I had to disconnect and reconnect the Clix multiple times (and sometimes even reformat it entirely !) to get an accurate sync.
- after all that trouble getting the sync to work, the Clix froze when trying to play some of the songs, so I had to carry a paperclip with me to reset it several times a day
- the firmware update on the iriver's support website failed to install even after several download and installation attempts ("invalid firmware file" was the error message !)
The experience became so frustrating that I ended up returning it.
Hopefully iriver will fix the bugs before releasing this version...
For all those who are bashing the design of this thing, you absolutely need to see one of these in person to appreciate how sexy it is. Other than the iPod, this is probably the most intuitive interface amongst the iPod competitors. The only thing holding me back from getting one (especially now that there's all black model) is the tiny capacity. Hopefully, by the time my iPod dies, we'll be looking at 20GB flash memory. That'd be beautiful.
I have the very previous model iRiver U10 and absolutely love it. The device and the docking station looks so cute and the docking station. The UI design is very innovative and user friendly. Sound quality, picture quality, video quality are all great. Clix ups the memory to 2 GB. Now it comes in 4G. Fantastic. I hope it would still comes in the creamy white color.
for those who think its too thick compared to the nano.....I think the nano is too long.(i also think its too thin)
I'm also the proud owner of the 2GB. Other than the MTP/UMD thing it's great. The size is fine, I think if it were smaller it would start getting difficult to use (read: s10) Too bad there's no brand recognition. Everyone who sees it thinks it cool, but they've basically never heard of iriver. I almost wish that it had microsoft's name attached to it instead of the zune >.
Tried the link earlier. The Iriver folks pulled the info from th website. I went there once & it was there, tried again & it was gone.
I looove my 2GB Clix. I've tried all the ipods and it frankly kicks them to the curb. the only bad part is the lack of UMS, you can only drag-n-drop via WTP which is teh suck. iRiver needs to break whatever deal they made with Microsoft - now that M$ is doing the Zune - so that the can put UMS support on this just like all their other players, it seems. even Sony supports UMS on their PSP.
oh yeah and pictures of the clix don't really do justice to its design and interface. it's quite small but the screen is very sharp and bright and readable.
you can preorder them now on the iriver website! they will ship november 21st!
I just pre-ordered the plaer/cradle bundle. Can't wait. I had bought the 2gb version but returned it a couple months ago when I first heard about it. Even if it wasn't true, I could still wait a while to see.
Guys, you can actually preorder it, and it comes with a free ac charger. just check out the link.

I just ordered mine on iriver yesterday... not sure if that was the first day it was available, it was probably up at the beginning of the week. I agree the clix looks amazing in person and it has a much better form factor than the ipod nano. Also if u get the bundle you get the docking cradle for half the price.
