SmashMyPS3, um, smashed their PS3
Those SmashMyPS3 crazies (or attention whores, your call), the same kids responsible for frightening Apple and Xbox fanboys the world over with their iPod and Xbox 360 smashing exploits, have gotten themselves a PS3 and done that smashing thing. Style points are to be awarded for the pimp getup, along with the sledgehammer badass who looked like he knew what he was doing. Plus extra double bonus points for making Mr. "eighteen *beelping* hours" cry at the end of the clip, garnering this video (which can be viewed after the break) its NSFW rating (for the bleeping, not the crying). It probably goes without saying that this video is also NSFFB and defiantly NSFPS3. Consider yourself warned. We're just glad to see some solidly pointless violence after all the kind-of-serious and life-threatening violence of last night, way to go guys!

This is so stupid. Waiting for a ps3 all night then give 600$ and then smash it! It's stupid
He´s very very very stupid!!
Way to go Paul. Give the whores the attention that they want. Good job, smashmyps3.com; it's not like Sony hasn't already received enough free publicity.
Why?
comedy of course.
Why not?
They should have been more creative than just smashing it with a hammer.
What a waste of time and money.
as much as I am not a fan of the ps3, why didn't they just give it to charity :(
this is the only PS3 story i have cared about in the last month.
pwnd.
The PS3 doesn't appear to be very sturdy.
Actually, I was really surprised at the resiliency; with the first drop (from full extension), it looked like just a negligible piece of plastic broke off, and after all those full-body-weight sledge-hammer swings, the PS3 held it's basic shape--I expected it to break it to shatter or at least flatten...only the top was really damaged.
"The PS3 doesn't appear to be very sturdy."
Are you saying it's possible to sledgehammer you console repeatedly by accident??
Did you see the SMASHMYXBOX360 video? The thing practically snapped in half compared to a little hole in a PS3. O_o What are you talking about looking "weak".
1 down, 399,999 to go.
Grow up!
this is just an attention grab to get advertising dollars. yay ! we all fell for it.
The sledgehammer dude looks like something out of Romper Stomper. Maybe he wouldn't have resorted to such violence had he waited for the white version of the PS3.
Fishes,
narco.
I thought the PS3 was actually really sturdy for taking a bunch of sledge hammer hits. Have you seen the inside of that thing? It's a giant heatsink! It may not work but it is still definitely in one piece except for cheap plastic.
Waste is subjective.
I hate it when people do this kind of stuff, and it's not because the PlayStation 3 is expensive. I hate it because they are just disrespecting the people who put so much time and effort into designing this high-performance device.
hear hear!! i am in total agreement with you on the effort that people have put into designing the console. But what bothers me probably even more is that the total disrespect these guys have for money. I justs wish i could smash their skull in!
the guys who run those sites are a bunch of f^cking losers anyway. It wasnt even amusing for the first time they did it.
Ahhh Yes, But our beloved 360 Proves Very "Sturdy" indeed....
http://www.engadget.com/2006/11/17/xbox-360-survives-multi-roll-car-crash-keeps-churning/
Actually it's not their money. People donated te money to them to buy the ps3 just to see them smash it.
Actually, they make more money off the ad revenue from their site than they spend on the ps3. And the money they spend is donated by people who want to see a ps3 smashed.
What is the point of this? Is it some anti-consumer comment or just some fools who think this type of thing is funny. Well done. I bet these guys were a hoot in college.
Their way of making money from PS3 reminded me of Engadget in October.
I find it hilarious. If you don't like it, get a sense of humor. No one's getting hurt except the starving kids in Africa. And PS3's don't really taste good anyways.
looks pretty tough considering
More stupidity from the average, or perhaps below average American citizen.

More stupidity from the average, or perhaps below average American citizen.
----------------------
You need to learn to research before you bash, these guys are actually Canadian.
at least someone found something useful to do with a PS3 since all the games for it suck.
Fricking Awesome! The fanboy reaction was priceless. BTW..I'm not hating on the PS3 I just love to see the reaction of the campers. For those of you that don't find it funny...well sorry. I (and many others) enjoy a different sense of humor based largely on Shadefreude. See the wiki for more details:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schadenfreude
They smashed the 20GB version, at least they were economical.
Awesome stuff. People who wait in lines for videogame systems are morons. Especially for overpriced garbage.
i cant wait for smashmywii.com it should be great..
because they could have done something useful with it, like donating it to Child's Play?
I wonder if this can be considered to be some sort of hate crime. =\
I'm pretty sure they smashed a 60 GB, $600 PS3. They claimed to have spent $674 dollars in donations (it's higher for tax). Nevertheless, I think it's kinda stupid, kinda funny, though mean spirited and rude. On the other hand, it doesn't really make a difference in the long run if they had smashed it or taken it home and played it. The thing that I think is funny though is this:
"We decided to...destroy things right when they come out, in front of 100's of fanboys...[but]I got nothing against Sony making money."
That's a quote from their website, and I find it funny because by buying a PS3, they're actually taking money away from Sony. As Engadget wrote in an earlier article, Sony loses a lot of money on each PS3 sold with their current production costs.
completely stupid and pointless.
However i'd pay for someone to stick that guy's head under the sledge hammer and see what happens. One less idiot is always a good thing.
This sucks, especially for the guy thats like 16th in line, and they only had 15 units. I'd want to friggin kill those guys...
I agree, where is a sniper when you need one. Those fuckin assholes.
Entertainment is always better than being obliged to care for kids.
I might care if it was SmashMyWii. That would hurt(my heart, for all of the sick minded).
These guys are brilliant.
Whethere or not it was meant to be an anti-consumer comment, what amuses me the most if the reaction from groups of nerds who value your silly GAME devices. We have all grown with these systems etc. However you all need to grow up.
It's not about wasting money, it's simply to coerce some for of emotion from foolish little boys who will spend more time with a console than a woman, a book or good conversation.
Life is about balance. I love madden as much as the next guy. But these guys open our eyes to the fact that it's plastic and PCB boards.
Put that in your perspective pipe and smoke it.
KIDS.
i think this is awsome. shows all the people who got violent over getting a ps3 how *bleeping stupid they were. it's just a game system.
Now thats the ONE situation where you want to get the Best Buy replacement warranty, then just turn around and walk back in with it.
Compared to the smashing job http://www.smashmyxbox.com/ did on the 360 the PS3 seemed to hold up relatively well to the sledge hammer.
How dare they use Franz Ferdinand like that! Blasphemous people.
Next time they need to do it in the store. Maybe they could also do smash my rear projector HDTV. They could buy a set, walk over to the display unit, and throw that little guy into it. Also I'm a little disappointed there is no VGA cable for PS3. I wouldn't consider buying one until there is.
they started to smash an ipod in the apple store and got security called or something. i don't remember exactly. that's probably why they don't do it in stores anymore and probably why they were (kind of) in the street.
anyway, to all these people whining about how dumb they are, that's the reaction they were going for. i think it's funny, personally, just to see those people in line freak out about something like this.
check it out guys, im selling my soul for the ps3.
http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/for/236475621.html
Why would anybody do this?
---
http://www.ps3users.net
It would be nice if they smashed each others face with that hammer afterwards...
Pure gold, was this at the BestBuy in downtown Toronto?
Now onto the Wii on Sunday! Oh use a flaming sledgehammer!
They could still probably get $600 for what's left of it on eBay.
Long H: it did look like the Bloor/Dundas Bestbuy. I was thinking that myself.
Kind of an amusing gag, although whoever donated money towards that PS3 is an idiot. With all the shit going on in the world, that's got to be one of the worst causes to give your money to. I would have preferred if the smashers bought it with their own money, rather than wasting other people's.
Okay, so people on ebay who are paying $1,200 - $10,000 for a product that RETAILS at $600 and will be widely available in 6 months or so are totally justified, cool, responsible people who do good things with their money; they're entitled to enjoy their hard-earned cash as they see fit. But people who donate part of $600 to make an amusing bit of social commentary are pointless assholes stealing bread out of the mouths' of orphans?
About as funny as the comedy stylings of Dane Cook (i.e. not very). These guys are such zeroes, not because the things they do are wasteful and pointless, but because they just aren't very entertaining.
Video download: http://www.mediafire.com/?6zzenndigzm
Actually buying a PS3 on ebay for double the price is just as dumb. As to "stealing bread from the mouths of orphans", whoever said anything about that? There's WAY more going on in the world than just third world aid relief. Yes, people have the right to spend money as they choose. That doesn't mean they aren't being idiots about it.
masterful. they bought it, they can do what they want with it. and this is just funny.
you are all looking at this wrong.
You see, I bet this is one test that Sony didnt do, the high impact study. Sure, they probably pushed it off a table and made it so it would survive that. But really, you never know when a dozen sledge hammers are going to fall from the sky and smash into your PS3. Its good to know that it looks like the PS3 will hold up pretty well in just this case!
cool. i donated 100 bucks... its put to good use...
I cracked up watching this. I found it so funny, that I watched it twice.
Reading comments of people that are actually upset about this made me laugh even further.
Wake me up when BD-Rs can be had for a buck and the price hits $300. I'll stick with my spindles of 360 games in the meantime....
Smash on brothers! The Franz music was a nice touch.
I want to Fxxxxxxg use the beat up PS3, and start beating up that guy with it.
stupid, very stupid... and pointless
i love it...
:)
i'd do that too with a PS3 if someone gave me the money to do so. Fecking australia wont be seeing one till next year sometime, and at $1000AU (something like $760US)
no doubt i'll get one, just not at the overinflated price of $1k
I chuckled. The guy's outfit was pretty fly too. I wish I had such extra moolah to be able to do stuff like that just for kicks. Some people just have money coming out the old wazoo. http://www.gotmoneycomingoutthewazoo.com
Look! Me Tarzan! Me go smash PS3! Ooo-ooo!
Like watching a couple of chimps.
Your lives that boring? You guys ever hear of a hobby?
If you don't value the hundreds of dollars it takes for you to buy these things in the first place, do something constructive with the money instead and send it to me.
Better yet, if you're going to be so stupid, why don't you guys sledgehammer each other - pick a body part and WHAM! That would be much more entertaining.
Besides, what's this supposed to prove to all the dummy sponges out there who will think it's cool? Or what does it prove, period? Not to value anything? What's next? Disrespect other peoples' things? Wheeeeeeee!
It's amazing what's considered news worthy these days. Dumb.
You know what.... someone should take it off. All these people want is attentions, and what we are doing is giving exactly it to them. They are probably having a massive orgy right now because of all the reactions online. Only when we DO NOT CARE, then it will dispell their pointless stupidity.
We really have to live with stupid people on earth. One gamer didn't get his PS3 because of this guy. What a disgusting act and guy.
I hate sony; and love this.
well why everyones gets so mad at these guys...... XD its a playstation......... it is not something you cant live without, besides its theirs money... even if it is donated... people donated for watching this.. not for saving a poor little children in africa..... its peoples money not your money...
and if they destroy it you werent going to have THAT playstation anyways why cry?!
its so funny the geeks reaction XD XD
Too much drama. They have every right to do it.
1. People pay for it so it happens. You watch sports others watch ps3 smashings.
2. Its funny. Its teirs. They wait in line for days just too smash it. Good for them.
3. The look on peoples faces is priceless.
I do think they could do it better though. I know its outside but they could have been more creative. Like why didn't he "accidently" drop the box in the store in front of all those fans and employees. That would be so much funnier.
Patrick, if you don't understand why people get upset at this, then you're entirely missing the point. And I mean, entirely.
The focal point here isn't that it was a PS3, or some other gaming machine, or a toaster, or any other item for that matter.
And the focal point isn't that it was their money or that the PS3 belonged to them. If someone wants to take a perfectly good and expensive item they just bought and smash it to bits, they can do so. They can jump off a bridge, too, if they want. But trying to establish fundamentals like this isn't the point. Actions involving any object can't be merited simply based on ownership of the item - nothing in life works that way. Actions are assessed based on the actions themselves.
These guys are doing this, videotaping it, and then posting it on the internet for all to see. And for what reason? To show how incredibly stupid they are? Ultimately, even if they did it all in private, it still wouldn't take away from the fact that it's a galactically stupid thing to do, and there's no argument against that. Doing a dumb thing in private is bad enough, but doing it for all to see - and on purpose - is fine tuned retardation.
And why shouldn't people be upset or frustrated at what they did? People who respond like you act as though what they did is a normal everyday thing to do, like walking or eating. Like some are overreacting when it's others who are UNDER-reacting.
The focal point here, and the point behind people getting upset, is this: Your type of response is record-breakingly apathetic and obuse to say the least - two characteristics that these PS3-busting-chimps share - and that only feeds into the proof of not only how incredibly spoiled rotten people are who obviously have too much and don't value what they do have, but also how pathetically dense and closed off they are to the world around them.
"People who respond like you act as though what they did is a normal everyday thing to do, like walking or eating."
No, it's your perspective on this that is totally skewed. Of course it isn't a normal thing to smash a brand new 600 dollar product. The guys that did it know this better than you. But the whole concept is a protest against consuming in all its facets, whether it is consuming as a substitute of pursuing real priorities and goals in life or consuming as substitute for empty, meaningless existence. Paying even 1 dollar above its normal price is not "a normal everyday thing to do", not to mention the excesses at online auctions. Standing in line for tens of hours is not "a normal everyday thing to do", not to mention the stories about waiting days and weeks. Creating trouble when the number of people waiting in line is larger than the number of allocated products is not "a normal everyday thing to do", not the mention the violence outbursts. But sadly, they are all indicative of the mindset of the average human. "I consume, thus I exist". There is only one downside in this particular form of social protest, the fact that with their action they contributed directly towards environment pollution, one of the worse side effects of consumerism which they tried to oppose.
Rock on guys!
I like this for the simple reason that it is:
1) not the sensible thing to do, and random
2) upsets people in this thread
3) makes people build psychological profiles on the peoople that do it
4) brings out the seriousness and ps3-centric, money-centric, charity-centric, morality philosophies of the posters here
I laugh. I found these monkeys enjoyable. More where that came from, hopefully. All the while the masses swallow DRM without so much as a word...
Ooooh, I was getting meaningful there. Must not go there. I will bend over and accept everything from my corporate overlords.
If they want attention, why not offer it to some poor kids and tape their reaction.
How do they make money off the ads? I never visited their site and I was able to view the video.
"But the whole concept is a protest against consuming in all its facets, whether it is consuming as a substitute of pursuing real priorities and goals in life or consuming as substitute for empty, meaningless existence."
So buying something is a protest against consuming???
If they wanted to really wanted to make some sort of comment on rampant consumerism they could have bought one, covered it in fecal matter and sold it on ebay. I would be willing to bet that people would still pay more than $600 for a fecal-covered, but still functional PS3.
Nice to know that there are families in the states alone that $699 could be monthly income of that someone can waste on this, smash it, and then upload it. If they gave the same amount of money to Child's Play or something worthwhile it'd be worth it, but where's the business model in this stupidity? Pimp getup was funny and all but just seems like an extreme excess to do. I've not gotten any of these 'smash my ' stuff.
yeah but it got crumpled when it was smashed
i dont care which is better im getting both since in aus it launches in march (we're the same as europe)
"There is only one downside in this particular form of social protest, the fact that with their action they contributed directly towards environment pollution, one of the worse side effects of consumerism which they tried to oppose."
...which is why the entire stunt is redundant. The smashing of one PS3 will not prevent Sony from selling millions of them; in fact it won't accomplish anything except anger the people in line.
It's their console and they can do whatever they want with it so long as they do not violate the rights of others while doing so. This is America and if they wish to smash their PS3 to bits. That's their right. So long as they aren't doing it in a fashion that harms others or violate laws like going onto someone's lawn and doing it, which would be trespassing on private property.
For those saying it's a dumb thing to do, I agree and disagree. It's certainly a waste of money since you're buying an expensive product only to trash it and that's dumb. It's also not a dumb thing to do because these people are doing it for the ad revenues generated by viewers who hit their site and comment.
I think some of you are getting way too worked up over this video, and the previous smash my ipod and smash my xbox 360 videos as well. Personally, it wasn't that interesting as far as the destruction video goes. I think the fanboy crybaby reactions were more interesting.
It's sad to read about so many people getting pissed off. If smashing a PS3 makes you want to smash thier head in, you need to do something else with yourself. They paid for it, they Ebay'ed the second one, and still made a profit. And they are famous now. Sounds like some people are just upset they hadn't come out of the launch in such a nice position.
And the people who produced that machine don't give a god damn what they did with it, they paid $600 fucking dollars for it, they can do whatever they want with it. And I enjoyed watching the chaos. Not because I hate or love PS3, because of the way you act.
Are you stupid, you spend 700$ on a Ps3 and waitd on line for many hous hours and you smash the thing you dumass
That's pretty dumb if you ask me but I'm likin like the franz ferdinand
I will never own a PS3, I won't waste money on one, I just think there are better things to try and get publicity for and to help with and that this is an incredible waste of bits & bandwidth.
What's the average age of commenters with violent reactions to this? Comments like "Where's a sniper when you need one?" and "I want to use the beat up PS3 to beat him" only show how frenzied and fanatical people are over the PS3.
I want a PS3 as much as any other Sony-obsessed gamer, but I appreciate the perverse humor behind smashing a PS3. After Sony's repeated delays, shortages, and asinine comments, I really would like to take out my frustrations as well... sad thing is, I'll be handing Sony $600 like the sucker I am.
Andy Kaufman would be proud of SmashMyPS3, he might have even done it better (and angered more).
All they've done is accelerated your throwaway culture by a few years and reflected it back at you. We are now in the age of Carbon and the organic compounds, and the human relationship to these substances that Western culture is now so dependent comprises of greed/exploitation, cheapness, protection, time-saving/speed and denial. The way they can manifest through us is as confusion, loss of identity, materialism, exploitation, money and poverty, mental weakness, a sensation of sinking, isolation, loss of will or motivation, apathy, indifference to others, and a longing for life.
LOL, I am suprised how many people are really disturbed by this. It really doesn't change anything at all. Unless you were there, and the person right in front of you in line got the last PS3. haha
I kind of think its funny... in a weird way. I like the guy crying in the camera at the end... "I waited 18 hours!" lol
Fanboys, stop crying, they are the same people as smashmywii, smashmyxbox, and smashmyipod.
They just do this so people pay attention to them.
And the PS3 handles pretty well against that sledge hammer!
The Wii was shattered to pieces on the first hit!
Hey why dont you sell the broken ps3 on Ebay. I am sure you would still get $4,000 for it.
Sure, it's somewhat funny to see people doing that in front of other people waiting in line, but I do not support this wastefulness.
If you don't want a PS3, don't buy one. Don't waste the paper needed to make the box and all the materials. Then, Sony must make more PS3. Essentially, it hurts the environment for no reason. That is teh way I look at it.
