Wii being hit by fatal error "110213" -- could be funky firmware
While so far Sony's PS3 launch seems to have gone off relatively error-free (we're talking hardware here, crime still doesn't pay, kids), Microsoft's 360 was notoriously plagued by errors at launch, and it doesn't look like the Wii is going to escape unscathed either. Reports have been coming in on the official Nintendo forums that after the initial firmware/software update that is downloaded during your first attempt to use WiiConnect24, some users are experiencing a "110213" error code, which bars them from using WiiConnect24 completely. Some people are conjecturing that the update is frying a necessary component to connect to the service, possibly being caused by corrupt downloads due to the incredible demand on the update servers currently. Whatever the cause, Nintendo phone support is apparently calling this a "fatal error," and replacing the units for free, including pre-paid shipping labels to make the process as smooth as can be -- of course, "smooth as can be" is little solace to launch day junkies who are halfway through Zelda already and will have to start over on a fresh box.[Thanks, Christian]

Oh how sad that some people still feel the need to turn this article into a PS3-bashing thread.
I'm sure your own respective consoles deserve more of your love and attention than you are clearly gratifying PS3 with. You hate cos you love, we all know that now ;)
Oh snap indeed. Damn, looks like I won't be getting one just yet. Glad to see they're willing to replace the broken ones without any hassles, this assures me that it won't be much of a problem for long.
I heard that the PS 3 has problems playing the PS 1 and 2 titles. Not outputting the audio and graphics properly. I also heard that Need For Speed Carbon will cost you about $1000 to unlock all the game unlockables! You guy's shouldn't be worrying about the wii connect right now. Hold on for a week or two so that they can fix it properly.
Are the games able to go online yet?
Daniel - if reports are true that the game hardware itself needs to be replaced then this isn't just something you can wait out.
It's a shame that Nintendo isn't posting anything to their website about this to acknowledge the problem itself or the fact that their phone lines are maxed out.
This is now what you get when trying to access http://wii.nintendo.com
"OK
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator, webadm@noa.nintendo.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.
More information about this error may be available in the server error log."
That server was actually completely gone for me for about a day, and just about all of Nintendo's sites were very slow.
Looks like the Wii release gave their bandwidth a bigger hit than they expected.
Time to upgrade those servers!
You'd hate to be the programmer responsible for this... forgetting a line to say check if the download was corrupt or not, and costing the company a few million. :ouch:
I don't think I got this error is there a way I can check to make sure I didn't?
I wonder what I should do. I can't use the WiiConnect thing because I don't have DSL. So I also can't see if mine is defective. But I don't want a defective one. And I don't think it would be a good idea to wait...
What should I do?
Timerider - You could take your Wii and a TV to a public hotspot... :) You really could if you wanted to.
So is this a problem with the Wii hardware or a problem with the firmware upgrade? Just got the Wii today and was wondering if I should try to connect to the internet or wait to see if anything develops with this problem ...
David - my guess is that the problem is with the unit itself. I personally know of several Wii owners who applied the updates and didn't have any problems. I would suggest you try the update to see if you have the problem. Then, you can get it replaced while it is still under warranty. The only thing you have to lose is a few weeks of Virtual Console access.
Update on customer service phone support... now you get a busy tone instead of a message saying they are busy. Going downhill...
Are you fucking kidding me about the PS3 launch being "error free?" The PS3 is having 10x the issues the Xbox 360 was having at launch and they had a year to learn from those issues. PS3 is the most failed launch of a console in YEARS.
k0an - thanks. I'll try it later tonight. Hope all goes well ...
I was actually surprised that the Wii had so many flaws, because the PS3 has basically none (Most of the ones listed are firmware issues, and the only one that is actually a harware problem is that "red light of death").
The Wii is basically a souped up GameCube, with outdated technology (The PS3 has sixaxis accellorameters ((two three axis ones)) and the Wii has one three axis accellorameter).
By the way, the PS3 overheats when it is stuck inside a large plastic thing that doesn't have very good ventilation.
*FIX*
Hey I really don't feel like combing through 4 pages to see if this has been posted or not, but I'll post this anyways.
I had the same error until I changed my Wireless Router's channel. I just picked a random number, fired up the wii and it worked! Hope this helps.
Yes, changing the channel of the router to 1 or 11 will speed up Wii's internet connection. I had mine at channel 6 (default for Linksys), which made the Wii download the update very slow (3+ hours). I also refrained from resetting the Wii while it was downloading, because the warning message said "do not shut off the Wii while it is updating". After updating, I have had no problems. I've been able to browse around in the shop channel as well.
Isn't it great being a beta testing early adopter? Boy do the console manufacturers love you guys. You find all the bugs for them and they don't have to pay you squat for doing it. Keep finding them bugs boys. I want an error free machine when I buy it one year from now.
zak frazier - I tried 4 different channels on my router as well as disabling security settings. No good. Glad it worked for you though. The problem is I think this error is a bit generic in that it is used whenever there is a problem connecting with a wireless access point. There are several different reasons why a wifi connection couldn't be made but in this case one of them is that the Wii is broken.
my wii is actually unable to update right now. The bar never moves, the connection is tested sucessfully, but no dice on the download. Sometimes it gives me an error code, sometimes it just stays at 0%... I think I may know the reason too, an over zealous relative synced a second controller while it was downloading or installing the first time. (sucessfully) The system kinda froze up, so i rebooted it, and it hasnt really worked since then.
After 3 days of calling I finally got a live person. He confirmed that my Wii has to be replaced. Hopefully it doesn't go on backorder like everyone else. He confirmed that I can copy my game saves to SD and my Miis to the Wiimote so that I won't lose any data. They are only swapping the console, not the Wiimote or any other item. I asked how many people had this problem but he said he didn't have the numbers. He said once it ships it should only take 1-2 days to ship it. He said once I receive it I will have 21 days to return it and if I don't on time they will charge my credit card $268.
Argh! I just checked the status site and it says "Backordered"!!!! I'm guessing it will be weeks or months before I can do anything online...
Oh well, at least this keeps me from spending money on Virtual Console games....
:(
UPDATE: Nintendo just emailed and said it shipped! It was only on backorder for a few hours!
:)
This fall we saw the release of the mighty Sony PS3 (it's so big in size that it makes the original X-Box look compact) and surprisingly 80% - 90% of them all went up on ebay. I'm not surprised as there are not any games titles that scream "you must own me". And of the one good game released, Resistance: Fall of Man, it was shocking to learn that it only displays in 720p (in order to keep framerate smooth) and not the 1080p that Sony pushed in everyones face against the MS X-Box 360.
Also released was the Microsoft X-Box 360 HD-DVD drive and surprisingly next to the more popular Blu-Ray the same movie on HD-DVD in 1080p looks like true High Definition that we are expecting. The same can not be said of the Blu-Ray movies as they are grainy and pixelated when shown in 1080p.
The Nintendo Wii soon followed the release of the Sony PS3, two days later, and NintenTards as they are called, flocked to swoop up the promised by Nintendo plenty of available Wii's at N.A. launch. But surprisingly less than promissed was to be found at retail locations. While many retail stores had silent raffles a day before in order to avoid the Wal-Mart craze of last year. The few fortunate ones that did receive their Wii's seemed much less excited and pleased once they finally had a chance to take their Wii for a spin. Many excuses keep flowing from the Nintendo-faithful spouting for their beloved $250.00 Gamecube with Wii-Tard controller. Even the long awaited Zelda game is not living up to gamers hopes.
I hope my experience helps some others out. I got the "corrupt system information" error today... I think I my may have played my Wii for 12 hours total? Anyways... I'm happy some people have been able to back up their game saves on SD cards... I was not so lucky... I can't even get into the main menu to select any such option. When I called Nintendo, they told me they would send a return shipping envelope and I would have to send the system back to them to be repaired.... 4-10 business days to get the envelope... then another 4-10 business days for them to receive it, fix it and send it back to me... but no replacement!! Some of you are getting replacements right away? I will be calling Nintendo first thing tomorrow morning to yell a little. At this point I don't even think I have the motivation to go through the first 6 hours of Zelda again... Boo-urns to Nintendo on this one. Mop up the mess you've made. By the way, I'm in Ontario, Canada... maybe you guys south of the border are getting better support from your Nintendo reps.. I have to send my !@#$$&% machine to British Columbia to be fixed! (that's like New York to L.A. in distance)
