Sony to recall eight defective Cyber-shot models
If there's any company that's anxious for this year to end, it must be Sony. After being faced with PS3 shortages (and subsequent insanity) not to mention that whole exploding batteries thing, we've just woken up on Black Friday to the news that Sony will be recalling eight Cyber-shot models due to a defect in their LCDs. Sony apparently says that the problem, found in an unknown number of cameras sold worldwide between September 2003 and January 2005, is "caused by a glitch with the image sensor." But don't think that you'll automatically be getting a new shooter: Sony'll only be repairing models DSC-F88, DSC-M1 (pictured), DSC-T1, DSC-T11, DSC-T3, DSC-T33, DSC-U40 and DSC-U50, which show signs of the problem.[Thanks, Drew]

yet another nail in the sony coffin

As foolish Sony have been, you'd have to be a moron to think that's going to happen any time soon. All you nerds think Windows sucks, Microsoft is still afloat - shows what your opinion is worth, just like mine.

While I'm working on that "being a fool" thing, should I work on anything else, like my grammar?

You probably shouldn't count the PS3 shortage among Sony's (admittedly long) list of problems. Launching a product like the PS3 with insufficient stock is commonly a part of the marketing strategy. It results in long lineups and mayhem that gets on national TV. You can't buy that short of publicity, but you can get it free if you deliberately understock the retail chain.

i agree the ps3 shortages wernt totallythier fault it was the other manufactures that delayed production (i.e blue ray diodes and some other part they had trouble with i cant think of )

damn i have a dsc-m1 any1 know where we can register for the recall up here in canada?

How come people bash sony? They didn't with intend release PS3 with limited stock - they had to release because another delay would really hurt the platform. A limited release was the best they could do at the moment.
Beeing a big contender makes faults cause big falls. Like the battery problems and such alike.
But the world needs Sony, as well as it needs its competitors.
What company would put their position at stake to develope a new processor arcitecture to power their big success platform? Sony did? That's innovation.
The competitors on the other hand - One use their best asset to create something totally different - That's creativity.
The other competitor put together already existing technology and put it on the marked with a shiny interface - That's just business.
So lets see what wins. Innovation, Creativity or pure Business?

How is this different than the "non-recall" Sony issued regarding bad CCDs in not only an array of their cameras, but also in cameras from other manufacturers that use the Sony CCD? They didn't issue a recall per se, but for many models of Sony cameras there's a repair program, and that includes the DSC-U30, smaller brother to the U50. Sony is repairing those cameras if you ask (provided you hit them before October 2007) but other manufacturers, you might be hosed.

Recently we have seen lots of Sony problems but in my house we have about 20 Sony products. These products range in age from about 2 weeks (KDL-46V2500) to about 20 years (walkman). Of all of these products only one has ever needed a repair and it is a 10 year old 27 inch TV (thus the new tv). In that same length of time I have replaced: several printers, 2 washing machines, 2 dishwashers, 2 refrigerators, 4 cars, at least 2 couches, 1 roof, 1 deck, 3 pets, and a wife. So forgive me if I do not get upset and boycott Sony over the the problems they are having recently. My personal experience with this electronics company has been better than with any other electronics company.

@Jimmy hehe and a wife that was funny
i got over a dozen Sony products my self from a 10 year old trinitron tv (our old trinitron went out after 2x years of abuse) to the handycam i brought as a gift for my uncle a few weeks ago all of them work fine and so far didn't require any sort of repair
one more thing i got to add most (unfortinatly not all) Sony products are still made in Japan that's spells quality for me not some poor quality control plant G-d knows where

Exactly- I've noticed that one of my older purchases, a Sony laptop, was made in the US. It broke recently after an unknown incident that involved liquid on the bottom of the laptop. On the other hand, I've spilled water on the keyboard of my other Sony Laptop, made in Japan, and it survived me pouring water on the keyboard(and if it doesn't, Sony Japan's warranty actually covers that for an extra fee). Also note that some newer Walkmans are made in China now.

So..... what exactly is the defect? I've got a T-33 I'd like to know the signs so I can make sure mine isn't going to need to be shipped out.

Ill Stick with Sony, I dont know of a more innovative company around. The thing about innovation is it creates new opportunities. Most things Sony came up with are imitated by other companys and they all try to take credit. Sony just continues to move forward. Also if they have a problem they own up to it and offer to fix the problem. Tell me what other company does that. I dont hear them whining and making excuses. I own to many Sony products to even count anymore and have had very few problems with any of them. So I will stay with them.

Happy new year to everybody......
My question is , i select sony digital camera DSCW30 to buy, but when i saw the box of that camera i saw the "Made In China". Sony is Japanees company than why the Made in China printed on the box. Is there any difference between china made sony cameras and japan made sony cameras. Please help me to clear my doubt. Thanks....
JLRMD2000 @ Sep 6th 2007 6:28PM

I have a Sony Cyber Shot 5.1 (DSC W5) that has just quit working. The LCD screen is white
with a black splash scattered through it. It will turn on, but then shut right off. It does not
allow me to look at any previous pictures or take any new ones. My question is...........Can
it be fixed and where would I send it to be repaired? I received this as a gift in March of 2006.
Walter @ Feb 16th 2009 2:29PM
My DSC-T11 just came down with this problem, so I called Sony. Suddenly, it isn't on the list anymore.
