We
knew it was shiny, but that was about it. Now we've got ourselves a few more angles of
Nokia's upcoming 870 Internet Tablet, and a few more specs to be getting on with. As noted last time around, Nokia's main addition here is a fancy new webcam, which can apparently rotate to face towards or away from the user. According to our anonymous tipster, things have pepped up quite considerably under the hood, and internal memory has been bumped to 180MB, but the architecture is relatively unchanged. The 870 runs the exact same
Internet 2006 OS as the 770, so no update love there. There is a fancy new integrated deskstand, however, along with a much-appreciated SD slot behind the battery cover in addition to that old RS-MMC slot which remains in the same easily-accessible spot. As you might've guessed from the pics, there's no more slide-in "dock" casing for this new version, but Nokia is including a fancy leather case, along with a microphone/headset for getting your VoIP on. Overall, the new version looks to be quite the svelte little number, and while we mourn the continued lack of a physical keyboard, we're sure we can find a few ways to have a good time with this little thing whenever it launches. Catch the rest of the juicy shots after the break.

Skinnay.

It's not a revolution, per se, but it's still pretty dang handy.

Double the memory slots, double the fun!

More skinnay.

This is actually the camera in action. See that little nubbin on the left and the glorious image of wood grain on screen? Yeah? Good times.
Excellent comments about Nokia.

Do the other specs remain the same? Processor and resolution especially?
Hopefully the processor has been bumped. Flash was slow as hell on the 770, and I was hoping to use it as a mini portfolio.
Thanks again, Engadget! While this is all very exciting, I doubt we'll see this until next spring:

Can it be used as a phone?
Matt: It can be used as a VOIP phone using Google Talk or Gizmo Project, but will not have a cellular radio inside. I wrote up an analysis to the link to the FCC documents that Engadget posted here:

Its a real shame about the keyboard. Maybe it has a magnetic one like the HTC Athena!

If they managed to put in a faster processor in this thing than the 770 they may just have winner on their hands... I personally cant wait to read a review on this thing.
Michael: If I am unable to score a prerelease review unit, I'm pre-ordering it and will post an in-depth review as soon as it's out.
The 770's design is about ten times sexier than that. Way too much bezel on the right, and the color is tacky. Yeah, silver is the new beige.
yeah. i was thinking the exact same thing. i could deal with the silver, but the chrome edging is too much. but then this one looks less weird bulging through my jeans pocket. hmm.... better looking in pocket vs. better looking in hand... i guess nokia chose the pocket. lol
want a keyboard? go with a bluetooth one. with the new stand, you can just pop in on some surface and the keyboard on your lap.
typing as you go (or maybe drive) is a big nono anyways. i know for personal experience that typing (sms mostly) as your on the move makes you pump into all kinds of stuff...
btw, i would love a shot of the leather case. if it have a flip open cover im seriously sold. but if i have to unpack the device each time its less interesting.
Yeah, I prefer the 770 design. I'm also wondering about the screen resolution.
Based on the appearance of the maemo interface, the display looks unchanged from it's high quality 800x480 display.
The improvements are nice. The key though is to keep the price the SAME. Or it will run into direct competition from low end small laptops.
And why exactly would one buy this over a Pocket PC? As far as I can see, it offers no advantages over a run of the mill Dell Axim whatsoever.
i hope this thing is bluetooth 2.0... i waited to buy a 3G phone with 2.0 and i'd love to be able to match it up right
As evidenced by my user-agent survey (http://synthesize.us/Maemo/HTTP_User-Agents ), this new device most likely uses a processor from the ARMv6 family (as opposed to the ARMv5 OMAP cpu in the 770).
I'm not stoked about that silver face, or the new body shape, but I can't see those factors stopping me from owning one of these. Before the new year, please?!
Pete, you might not have noticed, but this is not just another crippled PDA this is actually a general purpose computer that fits in your pocket. They're apples and oranges, friend: http://maemo.org/maemowiki/ApplicationCatalog2006
I agree about design, I like the 770 look better, but always love new features...my 770 shuts down if I do too much web browsing.
I just realized that the side effect of the flip-out stand is that you can put your hand under it while you hold the tablet, which should help alleviate some hand fatique if you use it hand-held like I do.
With the sliver face and the retro speaker grill styling, I feel like I'm looking at an old transistor radio from the 70s.
What's it have over a pocket pc? It ain't running windows mobile, yecch.
What's that video chat client on the screen? It looks like Google Talk but.. it doesn't support video right now.. oops.. another spoiler I guess!
Too bad it's missing a thumboard.
Here's hoping it has:
GPS
SDHC support
Stereo Bluetooth
If it has these things, I might consider it and a 6300 over a N95...
Don't take all of those specs verbatim. They're mostly accurate, but not completely.
If you live in the UK and your Nokia 770 needs to be repaired, Nokia will disown you. Their service centres won't take it. Nokia will claim they don't even own this device. Yip that's right, I've owned a Nokia 770 for 6 weeks and I'm trying to make Nokia fix it because all their service centres won't touch it. It's a great device but if you don't want to have a pay a lawyer just to get Nokia to live up to your statutory rights in the UK, don't go near it.
Has anyone used the 770 to view video? Is this possible? If the new 870 was also capable of viewing video at its high resolution, that would be an added bonus for commuters like me.
